This is not cricket as I know it. Obviously if I’d stuck to my morning position I’d be well up for playing in the gloom and drizzle and generally they take the players off too soon but I’m being carted out in a box here!

that's another massive difference between the sides..attitude,energy and fielding prowess

It’s exaggerated by the match state though: sides in winning positions are much more on their mettle in the field because of the situation. Once you’re down in the field, you stop caring so much.

The thing about the radar - I find - is to discard the blue and only pay attention to orange/ red/ pink. Blue is often just drizzle, and in the modern era that is played in. Yes, it can force players off, but invariably they are back on again soon...just my take - I stuck to my convictions and pleased I did, cos at 8.30am I was looking at a largish loss...

When first thing you do in a test is lose 2 wickets in a few overs, under leaden skies, then another in a micro session and end up all out for just over 100, you’d need a lot of mental strength not to play like the fates have been against you.

they undoubtedly got the worst of the batting conditions but didn't show enough application nor resolve imho
too many wafty type shots
adversity defines the man and they have been found wanting bigtime
a lot of sport and even life is how you cope mentally

Does anyone agree that there's a valid argument to abandon the toss completely and offer the choice to the visiting side to balance out the massive home-side advantage?

no advantage in a coin toss 50-50
if you mean the advantage a home side has over a visiting one
it's always been thus,in theory anyhow
but plenty of top visiting teams have won away from home
if they're good enough

Toss not as influential as people think, this match an exception

I wouldn't be against scrapping the toss but don't think it would make a huge amount of difference

Oh completely agree with this.

Could see a few runs from this pair but conditions aren’t conducive and they pretty much can’t influence the match without putting on over 200.

must be comfortably the worst ranked number 1 side ever. sure they've been on the wrong end of conditions here but they've been absolutely pathetic in this match

any half decent side would at least managed to get the close on day 2 100/5 and give themselves a chance of getting over 200 and staying in the game

Everyone is rubbish away from home at the moment though. Course India have been good in Sri Lanka, and the WI so rightly best side, although I agree, it’s hardly the dominance of the great WI or Aus sides of old, or even really on a par with the very good England side that won the Ashes away in 2010/11.

Do you really think England’s batting would have lasted 50 overs in those conditions against our attack?

think Curran and Pope look good additions to the side
good to have the youthful exuberance allied to undoubted talent
and seem to have the temperament that won't be too easily fazed

Correction:

The 4 match series was 1-1 & 2 draws

The 2 match series was 1-1

Still bloody good compared to everyone else.

English can't be the richest language Johnny boy. Russian and Persian may disagree.

Sadly I wasn't following cricket then on that Ashes 2010/11 tour Sad

If they’d only managed to keep it to 3 down by the time the rain took them off...

I really ought to have gone green in the low 5s earlier but it looked to me like they’d come off, which would have seen the draw drop to the 4s somewhere. Given that as always, I felt the draw far more unlikely than the market, it’s amazing that I’ve lost a packet on a result again. I need to have stern words with myself. Today’s weather play felt to be a good one...

Obviously hard to know but we got bowled out for nothing in NZ with the ball doing a lot less than it did here.
