Double jam,

Just got to pc and was considering a Pakistan lay to clear red but not green out!

Boycott is my hero. He called this perfectly. Said Anderson was bowling filth and maybe this end would be better for him as he took a five for here last year! Kwality commentator!

Geoffrey also went on to say that because he bowled some ordinary stuff from the Pavilion, Root should have said to him thank you very much and that will do for now but maybe he is too timid!

Can anyone who knows more about cricket than I do explain why a batsman should "play for lunch" or tea or stumps? Surely it is always easier to score when the batsmen have their eye in and the bowlers need a rest. The hardest time to bat is at the beginning of a session surely?

It's purely psychological sage, unless of course the batsman is on 99 or a night-watchman is in place. 99 is best left till the morning imo.

It's just psychological sage.

Boycs would say if the ball is there to be hit  then hit it!

I think what happens is there is confusion in the batsmen's mind as he wants to get to the end of the session but indecision may make him ironically play a loose and rash shot. More than likely is one wicket brings two so don't get out before the break. The fielding side also raise their game before an interval. It is almost like Man ure and Fergie time.

Test cricket is a marathon. You cannot gain anything by scoring 10 extra run right before a session but in trying to score those runs, you are giving the opposition an opportunity to take a wicket that is worth way way more than whatever you can score in the 15 min before lunch. Hence the need to 'play for lunch'. Other than that, its just a milestone really, taking the game session by session. And psychological.

I don’t agree. In what way do any of those arguments not apply at other times in a session? I think the playing for x thing is bollocks, myself and if anything think it’s a relatively good time to be aggressive.

There can't be any mileage in the draw with these two sides. It does look like there might be some rain at some stage.

That was just my opinion Fats. I have never played the game and usually refrain from giving expert opinion because of that.

I'd say just before a break, the bowlers are putting in more effort knowing they'll be having a rest for 40 or 20 min.

Nick Compton has suggested the opening partnership has not worked for some time!

Doh

Only the selectors can't see this!

But he has suggested Cook at 3, which, isn't a bad shout. Root at 4 particularly in England is more solid for me. Apparently Gubbins is not good against spin but is in the frame!

Just feels extremely painful at presentI’ve been there, both in early April and last summer. I burned through 1/3 of my account in about 6 weeks, I think. I was over staking on T20s and 50 overs but not outrageously and everything else I did lost too, even a test, which was horrible. I ramped back my stakes and recovered in the end. You will too.I've not really tilted tbf, just loss after loss (20k on AFL in a few weeks). My biggest loss was 5k on Somerset the other night. The rest is 1k here and there but getting absolutely smashed.Very similar to me last summer. A lot of what I do is backing short odds things in football that should be shorter so it’s unusual for me to lose relentlessly but for a while almost everything I was exposed for over a grand on seemed to lose. It does happen but it’s hard to take at the time. It’s even worse if you have to take money out for life stuff. Anyway, I’ve not paid a cent of PC since. Got close last month but then lost loads again. I’ve made it all back and more now. When I sit back and think about it I'm in the same position I was in before the last test NZ v Eng & SA v Aus. Still painful though as I spent a fair chunk in April!!

I had same thing having got up to an all time high total and level with highest ever bank early April (thanks very much test cricket) then lost £10-15k but also had to pull eventually £25k out. Fortunately I started winning it back before I needed to extract the whole lot. You just need a sense of perspective on it because you’re not taking full advantage of your edge or mitigating PC unless you’re swinging but that inevitably means some losing runs.

this is the same nick compton that couldn't get it off the square at headingley that time (was it v NZ/WI/SL??) when eng were absolutely dominating the game and just needed quick runs

Actually I have played some cricket. I remember the ball brushing my nuts while keeping as I didn't know the ball would thud into my hands so hard. It went through my hands brushing my nuts for four. Looks much easier on TV.

My main talent was umpring. And I was smacked on the cheek by a throw from long on.

That's all I achieved in my cricket career.

It’s a majority view, just not one that stands up to analysis, I don’t think. Old pros are the worst for pushing it.

Not really loving the overheads here. Could have done with some sun. I’ve taken on some more draw green on it bouncing around, having had some good trades on the third wicket but it’s done one of those stick at higher prices things that can be so costly if there’s a wicket. That’s partly, although by no means entirely, how I got in such a hole when England batted.
