Two changes for England , Wesley and Milan , Rabada back for SA.  This is too close to call for me and the toss is vital.  The draw at 4.1 is too short in my opinion, the long range weather forecast looks ok so the lay of the draw is the play for me . Good Luck.

I'd say it's about equal, which makes SAF the bet IMO.

Not sure how important winning the toss will be, at least relative to the first 2 matches. First 2 days forecast cloudy.

Hampshire scored 648/7 in the last 4 day game played at this ground.Surrey's response was 483 ao.Think I'll wait till we get more info on the pitch.

The Oval is usually pretty flat, although you can get movement early, especially if it's cloudy. Eleven wickets fell on day 1 against Pakistan and the draw traded near double figures but Pakistan then batted for most of day 3 and England started the second dig well enough to have the draw in the 2s, I think, before the inevitable collapse and closing 4 down. Will check the thread.

I left the fact that Pakistan batted all of day 2 for minimal damage, although there were two late wickets, implicit.

If you keep trying new batsman one will have to score some runs eventually, if only through good fortune.

westley a strange pick if you ask me. surely if cook thought he was any good he'd have played long before now given the number of different players we've tried in the top 3 the last 2 or 3 years

Cook's not been a selector and even if he has a view about Westley, doesn't necessarily mean he's right. The guy had playing in division 2 against him until this season but he's been excellent with the lions and had a good season. Also, we've tried everyone else!

FS-  'we've tried everyone else!' - That sums it up.

Westley was picked for the Lions and took a ton off Rabada and co.

What frustrates me at pro level and in the club game is that the newbie has to bat in the top 3 whilst seasoned players sit in the middle order away from the new ball and fresh bowlers.

Root must bat 3 and Westley could come in at 6.
By:

When: 22 Jul 17 18:09
it's just obvious. surely root must be fed up coming in at 30 for 2 every time and trying to rescue the innings. take some responsibility and let the new players bat in easier conditions lower down the order

SA look the value, with Kagey back for Olivier they are looking a pretty solid unit again.
Saffers bowling looks excellent and has great variety. Also for the first time since their reintroduction, they have a top spinner, who can hold an end when needs be, but also take vital wickets.
I've backed SA (3.05/3.1) for now & will cash out before the toss. Hope to see 2.7/2.8 with the weather set fair.
Definitely will look for a draw back to lay on day 1 as the first innings should be good for batting.
Also I expect England bat with a bit less gusto, especially from Joe and the middle order.
There is a massive difference between playing positively and pure unadulterated recklessness.

I was reading that the reason Stoneman wasn't considered is because Bayliss has never seen him bat in the flesh.
Staggeringly unprofessional imo.

Prices about right, I've got Eng 2.4, Saffers 2.7 and the draw at 4.5. Once again it will all be on the toss.

On another note, this was the email I received from Smarkets regarding liquidity.

Hi Benjamin,

Yes we are aware that our liquidity does not match that on Betfair with regards to the cricket.

This is actually mainly due to having less Indian customers as a great deal of liquidity in the cricket comes from the Indian market.

We will however be pushing these markets and a few others in the not to distant future as liquidity builds so I am sure in time as with other popular markets we should see a substantial increase in volume traded.

Also Thank you, as we do appreciate all feed back and I will ensure your voice is heard.

Kind regards,
Gary

I did ask them if the market makers would up the ante as in play is only around £200 each side, although a very tight spread, no different to BF prices.
If they can get it to between 500 and 1k either side it should get the ball rolling.

My email sent to Smarkets

Hi Smarkets,

Hope things are going well and everything is on the up day by day.

I write this as I've noticed a massive increase in volumes traded.

I currently have a account with you but have still not deposited with you yet as I would struggle to trade with your current volumes.

I'm a test cricket trader that has traded a couple of million over the last two years. my trades tend to be swing trades and would range between £200 and £2000.

I was pleased to see the the other morning that Betfair had traded 350k while you had traded 150k pre match (Eng v S.A) with decent amounts either side, thumbs up to you.
But now current figures show Betfair 8.7mil, Smarkets 253k after 1 days play.

I know taking on Betfair is a challenge in itself but in play is where the money is at and no doubt you understand that.

While watching the test yesterday I was keeping an eye on Smarkets and even though the spread was tight there was very little money either side, £200 tops.

I don't use any API during tests but some do and i'm sure you're aware that this is an issue.
From my understanding is that you only let market makers use API, and that's up to you but if the market makers could up the stakes to say £500/£1k either side, without doubt it will get the ball rolling.

I wish you all the best and hopefully we can all move from the dark side to a more brighter and transparent exchange.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope to deposit soon.

Kind regards,
Ben

P.S your Test markets could go up a lot earlier, massive draw for me as I like to start trading them around 7 days prior to kick off.

I think the figures are similar to the Daq. £2 matched on BF @1000 would be £4 traded (£2 each side) whereas Daq would be £2002 traded (2k layer side plus £2 backer side). It makes a big difference especially with golf as loads of bets are placed at BIG ODDS.

It's still worth keeping an eye on. Might just do a test with £100/200 stakes to get a feel for it.

Got myself a bit stuck with some backs at 4.3 and hate taking a red but that does look like a 12+ wicket day under clouds before maybe flattening out. Still a day to go though.

Market sentiment more than anything for me.
No rain forecast and when people see that amount of greenness it may go to 5s/6s pretty quickly.

Good point and excellent reason in itself (especially as draw at 4.5 is short anyway) although England's batting on that under cloud cover with Morkel, Rabada and especially Philander bowling? The draw price could be 10 in an hour, 12s by lunch and 20 at close with SA 3 down themselves. I'd not be that much more confident about SA against Broad and Anderson as their batting isn't all that either.

Sure but will still be at least a little green even after cutting.

Forecast on Met Office changed to 50% chance of rain 1300 and 1600 (they do 3 hour brackets). Draw price not really changed to reflect that yet. Hoping for some lower numbers to lay at.

They may have some weather issues tomorrow re pitch preparation. The picture juce posted is a fairly natural colour for a pitch to be with 2 days to go.

They would hope to shave it to 5mm tomorrow weather permitting.

FWIIW, not much agreement between forecasts, which indicates to me we will see further forecast changes and hence draw volatility.

I agree with jucel. Sentiment could send the draw quickly to 5s.

I still think the gap between the SA and England price is too much, with Rabada back SA will be stronger, i backed them at 3 expecting them to come in to about 2.7 but they have drifted? i suppose if the draw does go out to 5+ like people are expecting then it will be the SA price that moves in the other direction whilst the England price will remain the same, at least this is what i am hoping. Its only a pre match trade but it was one i was pretty confident about.

Is there a way to look at betfair's historic prices(graphs) for, say, last 20 test matches?
By:
jucel69
When: 26 Jul 17 06:43
Don't get these prices at all, make absolutely no sense. SA are pretty much the same price as just before the toss in the last game.
Since then they have thrashed England and have Rabada back. Bizarre really.
There is a bit of rain in the forecast but all looks to be nominal in the grand scale of things. Should be able to make up the time during the five days. Still plenty of light at this time of the year & floodlights are available.

Just laid the draw for more at 4.1.

Netweather has rain tomorrow morning.
