Look at that ball go.  Think going down, but won't be long now...

Too late for me apparantly.  Angle got me.  Middle.  rotflmfao

that was a great decision by Aleem Dar.  These umpires have been pretty good at times.

I was just thinking, do I want a wicket to remove the tiny seed of doubt that was beginning to grow, or do I want to top up on Aus overnight.

South Africa were never going to get a drawn result when they come out batting with the pure intent of blocking the ball and not playing any shots, they pulled it off back in Australia a while ago when we were a bowler short but this is alot different

Clarke can put every fielder around the bat and not have a care in the world now, only a miracle sees a drawn result

The question has to be raised.. Australia could score 300+ in both innings but SA look all at sea when it comes to them batting on the same pitch

Scoreboard pressure and it's now fair to say that Aus are the number one pace attack in the world. Fair enough Steyn hasn't been at his best for most of the series, but Morkel is inconsistent and Philander has nothing to offer.

how is the draw so short? does the weather play a part.?

Think this test match perfectly illustrates how much South Africa will miss Kallis. Not enough bowling options and top order looks fragile without him.

Draw backers could have done with him here!

Interesting little stat. In the last 8 Test matches played at Cape Town, the Afternoon and Evening Session Run rates have been pretty similar, 3.377 and 3.376 runs per over.

Expecting it to be a fairly cagey Day 5 . 2 of those 8 games have gone to a Day 5, scores have been 47/2 and 53/1 in the Morning Session

I have the Under/Over line for Morning Session Line to be about 83.5

83.5?  Dafuq?

Closer to about 30 IMO....

Gotta consider we are playing 98 overs in the day as well

83.5 runs in 37 overs....I will say it will still go overs, despite De Villiers scoring and block yesterday (16 off 100)
By:

not that runs matter in this match
By:
BJT
When: 05 Mar 14 03:07
AB has 16 runs in 100 balls.  Abbot 1 from 11.  Pretty clear their intention is to block everything.  Runs will come from edges, and the very occassional loose ball to try and push the field back.

Ian Chappell , from what I watched a couple of years ago when watching cricket, always said the 'best form of defence is to attack' . Don't think you can simply play with a dead bat for 30-40 overs of just pure blocking.......

When: 05 Mar 14 03:09
56 runs were scored in 35.0 overs yesterday too.....so maybe 83.5 is slightly high

Du Plessis, Duminy, Philander, Steyn, Morkel. Australia still going to have to work hard to get these 6 remaining wickets

This game reminds me a bit about Adelaide Oval back in 2012. Australia had south Africa 4 down at the end of Day 4..... And AB De Villiers and Du Plessis saved them
By:
West Coast Eagles
When: 05 Mar 14 03:14
Sun, 25 Nov    - day 4 - South Africa 2nd innings 77/4 (AB de Villiers 12*, F du Plessis 19*, 50 ov)
Mon, 26 Nov    - day 5 - South Africa 2nd innings 248/8 (148 ov) - end of match
By:
West Coast Eagles
When: 05 Mar 14 03:15
De Villiers scored 33 off 220 balls in that match, Du Plessis 110 off 336 balls. Couldn't see why they couldn't do it again? They have history on their side, they have done it before
By:
West Coast Eagles
When: 05 Mar 14 03:16
And heck they batted 148.0 overs in that match, this game they will have to negotiate around 139.0 overs or less Wink
By:
West Coast Eagles
When: 05 Mar 14 03:16
very very similar game scenario to that one, in fact identical
By:
West Coast Eagles
When: 05 Mar 14 03:19
View has to be to Lay Australia at 1.25, whilst De Villiers is still there..........think we could see some trading opportunities if they block around 10-12 overs , where price could go up very quickly
By:
BJT
When: 05 Mar 14 03:20
What about Abbot, who won't last 10-12 overs.  A wicket is still a wicket.
By:
West Coast Eagles
When: 05 Mar 14 03:21
yeah Du Plessis is the next batsman........too
By:
West Coast Eagles
When: 05 Mar 14 03:24
Anyway should be interesting............Australia rightfully start favourites but South Africa have the capability of blocking it out for the whole day as well

Totally different circumstances back in 2012.

No Mitchell Johnson or Ryan Harris on that occasion... Pattinson didn't bowl a ball in second innings after getting injured in first innings so Oz were a bowler down... Adelaide Oval pitch was more of a road than this pitch in Cape Town... And didn't Kallis come in at number 8 on that occasion as well for some reason? No Kallis coming in at number 8 this time!
By:
West Coast Eagles
When: 05 Mar 14 03:37
Similar situation obviously a different pitch. Adelaide traditionally been a batter friendly wicket but always does offer a bit for bowlers late on Day 4 and 5. (A prime example being Warne and his bowling of England in the 2006 Ashes)

When a team saves a game/ chases a high target on the 4th innings, people will always say its 'a road or flat pitch or batting friendly' but you still have to put in the effort and toil to get the right result.

I remember referring to a game chasing 414 down at the WACA and going to that game on the final day, a few years later someone on the forum said 'the WACA was a road that day. Any team could have chased down that target'. I was at that game and Australia , at the WACA....and the South African batsman were too good, they 'earnt win' , the WACA being one of the toughest venues I think for batsman in the world

Ball starting to do plenty.  Tough for the night watchman, and tough to come out and face it straight away.  AB has faced 100 balls, but 12+ hours will pass before then and he has to face it straight up.
Then there is the spin.  Smith getting it to do plenty.  RRR getting out of control to the point Clarke will crowd the bat.

Good luck if you are opposing Aus.  One of those times I can see it drifting somewhat, but get your timing wrong and it could be all gone in a few overs.

Agree BJT, have to take a position, could easily be all over in the morning session........or could be down to the last few overs of the day. Think there is a few twist and turns left in Graeme Smith's final game.
