there might be a bit of rain in the air in Auckland next week.

What is more surprising is that India are priced up as the dog in a Test match with New Zealand.
I feel sure that the bookies will not be so generous and have taken a slice of this cake.

NZ Metservice predicting showers all 5 days. Not clear how much rain at this stage.

I expect India will shorten relative to NZ from here.

I'd have NZ and India about even.

Auckland usually high scoring ground, so draw definitely a runner even without weather.

Be wary Foinavon. NZ at home are a very difficult prospect. NZ pillaged INdia with Ganguly, Laxman, Sehwag, Dravid et al a few years ago even in the tests.

that said "the NZ bookie" has India slight favs to win the series with India at 2.7 and NZ at 2.9 and drawn series at 2.60. THey are normally pretty good at setting odds for what its worth.

just for the acuracy of the title.  there are now more cows in NZ than sheep

Thanks for the warning Tyco, I'll regard my back of India as a trading position. Should be able to turn a profit unless India are slaughtered from the outset or it's a washout.

New Zealand has always been known for it's excellent butter so am willing to believe that Take the Stand.

I'm sure this affects the probability of a New Zealander buggering a cow versus a sheep, but I'm struggling to see it how affects betting on this match.

Didn't think the kiwis fancy cows at all,I thought they imported their beef in the boot of commodores.

Laying India like the Kiwis to again punch above their weight and have the draw onside with weather and India's fear of another away from home failure.

haha pxb you are incorrigible. FWIW I would rather bugger a sheep than a cow purely on logistical grounds mind. Im surprised at the odds in this game as the "NZ bookie" has NZ and India both at 2.90. So Im with Foinavon and am going to back India and lay NZ to protect the draw as I see the forecast has deteriorated again. That said the forecasts here often predict or show more rain than actually falls and Auckland is known for having 4 seasons in one day. (thats where the Crowded House song comes from)

Keeping the draw onside as well. Going to be quite a bit of rain, but most looks to be at night. So perhaps just delayed starts.

How well does the Auckland pitch drain?
By:
tyco161
When: 02 Feb 14 22:19
I have no idea about drainage at eden park. But most venues these days are quickly dry. I am too going to keep the draw onside but hope to be in Auckland from Wednesday night onwards to be close to the weather so to speak.

India 20% NZ 30% Draw 50%
OK there's some rain about but this looks like an over reaction. I've layed the draw at 1.9 in the hope of wickets on day 1. Looks like I backed India too soon as the price is much better now.
Not for the risk averse!

Looking at the rain forecast models, at least some of the forecast rain will be drizzle in the onshore flow, which makes it very hard to predict.

I tend to agree with you Foinavon that the draw price is a bit of an over reaction, but the uncertainty means I will green up and leave this alone.

I always seem to lose money on NZ test matches and swore I'd never touch them again after the last series...can't resist the challenge unfortunately Shocked

Looks like the tide is turning. Amazing what a change in the forecast can do. Now it looks like the first 3 days will be fine and pretty much full days play. Lets hope so. I am going to Auckland so may be able to update you guys as to what the weather is doing. (if I can find the time).

just heard on the radio that the pitch and what it will be is a mystery and the groundsman has not heard from the NZ contingent. Not saying it will be a dry spinner, or a green seamer, but it may be that there have been no instructions from the home side. THe implications was that the groundsman was doing his own pitch.

Umm, I look at every weather site online and see varying showers forecast each day. You not ramping tyco are you?
By:

When: 04 Feb 14 03:31
NO I am not and never have so please do not accuse me of that. I use only the met service forecast. www.metservice.co.nz. NZ based and a uni buddy works there as a meteorologist. They are reliable I do not bother with any other 3rd party forecasting site that is just passing off second hand info. I note that 3 or so hours ago they were forecasting a few showers for Thursday morning which were not there 4 hours ago. But beyond that the 10 day forecasts can be taken with a grain of salt. Firmly believe that Thurs, Fri, Sat will be ok and Sun Mon is at this stage a bit in the air but should be allright. That said the weather in Auckland is very fickle and can change quickly.

No problem tyco. I can only see what I see online...and every weather site suggests showers and more showers. Even your site suggests showers on Friday. And Sun, Mon, Tues, etc. I'm sure your uni buddy is terribly reliable though.

Im not saying its not going to rain, its just a whole lot better than the forecast was yesterday. Yesterday they were predicting showers Thurday but RAIN Friday and Saturday with showers Sunday and Monday. The situation is looking a whole lot different now. But yeah keep the draw on-side because its not going to be dry for the 5 days that is for sure. But showers are only that, and once they are playing they can stay on if there are showers about and the "showers" predicted for Thursday if you look to the 48 hour forecast do not really look like a lot of rain in them.....

Looking at various sites the total amount of rainfall predicted seems low 0.1mm 0.2mm that sort of thing. As you say tyco

there will be some interruptions but prob not any days washed out. Cloudy skies usually help the ball do a bit as well.

Tyco has given us good local information previously Chardonnay, he doesn't ramp.

I can now see the changes he mentioned on the weather site I use.

As I said earlier, rain forecast uncertain. Could be very little. Could be fairly frequent showers.

I'm done with this, unless/untill I have more confidence in the forecast.

Only a few showers , nothing to get excited about.  First day likely to be fine , good conditions for bowling.
The current draw price looks a very safe bet to drift before match starts.
Auckland showers tend to be heavy but brief, and drainage good so see little problems , especially as any lost time will be able to be made up. Light very good at this time of year , so people being scared off by unreliable weather sites

If you stick to www.metservice.co.nz cant really go wro

Its been roasting and dry all week here in Auckland.  4 day forcast is for same.  I dont reckon any weather issues.  Light will be good till 7pm at this time of year so no issues.

I REPEAT WEATHER WILL BE GOOD  4 days minimum of unitrupted cricket.

Live 2.5km from eden park and will post in morning the local weather

Interesting to see Dan Corbett again. He used to present the weather on the BBC a few years ago.

Hope you guys are right by the way, the draw price is starting to look a bit scary.

Bit of scattered cloud nut sure it will burn off as usual.  Heading to work on this public holiday :(  Will catch the last 3 hours on tv later.

Cant believe nz are favorites here.... they cant play the same way as in odi's.    Lay the draw imo

Hi Foinavon,  I am in auckland. I can back up what takethestand is saying re the weather. I am about 3km north of eden park and its cloudy but there are patches of sun and so far its looking dry enough. I do note the forecast is not so good for tomorrow, but today is looking ok. Came here yesterday and noted a few wet patches but that was it. Patchy showers that may float through so now and then. Yeah we have Dan Corbett now he is good value.

Cheers tyco, keep up the updates as they are invaluable. What's your thoughts on the forecasts for the rest of the test and any wicket news filtering through?
