tie would put sri lanka out and new zealand through , so sri lanka need to get this wicket before the cores are level

tbh SL backers should have greened up earlier when the last wicket fell and SL went to 1.02 so all on board the OZZY train lol.. not often u get to back a team at 26/1 and they actually pull it off!

The fact that they got so close is evidence to me that teams usually, either chasing or setting a target, place too much emphasis on keeping wickets in hand at the expense of the run rate. The Aussies did the opposite by an extreme extent because they had to and yet they were one dropped catch away from winning in the end. Losing wickets early on doesnt neccesarily mean you will get a low score. Although I never thought The Aussies would win the match because of the situation had they been only slightly more defensive they would have.

very true aston. i suspect the correct tactics for 50 over cricket is to go hard at it from the outset, and keep going until very deep in it - particularly with the batting friendly constraints and the fact that 8, 9, 10 and 11 nowadays are pretty darn good.
no team has the balls to do it though in a regular match

yep, thought occurred to me too Aston.  Just by going mad initially it puts your opponents on the defensive anyway.

My strategy would be go hard until you lose two wickets then go very carefully until 30 overs, step it up and go beserk in the last 10.

My strategy would be if you need 5 an over, score 5 an over or a little bit more from the start, if you need 6 score 6 etc. If setting a target aim to be 50 after 10 overs, then if you dont lose any wickets try and get 60 off the next 10. If you lose 3 or 4 then 40 off the next 10. When chasing it doesnt matter if you lose wickets though as you still have to get the runs and not make it too difficult for the batters lower down.
