Even when Professor Neil Ferguson, chief advocate of the Panic Laws, was caught ignoring his own rules, nothing changed. The nation giggled and missed the point. I actually care more about what goes on above Prof Ferguson’s neck than what takes place below his belt.
Quality. He picks up on the issue which should have shifted this bollox into the bin but so many simply didnt think about the implications. |

The buffoon who got us into this, and now cannot get us out, continues to be lauded and fawned upon as if he were Kim Jong Un. Those who six months ago could not forget his long history of amateurishness, dishonesty and clowning now cannot remember them, and praise him instead.
Even a Mail “ Journalist “ calls Dorris a buffoon! I think Hitchens likes the sound of his own voice and likes to be controversial but I agree with a lot of what he has to say on this. There has been little or no challenge to the Governments version of the facts. Labour have been very disappointing without a leader until recently. It is clear there is no mood to bail out the rich and maybe they need a new man at the top to look after their interests. Fact is without testing we don’t know where we stand. I am all for going back to work but we should have had mass testing to get an idea of what we can expect. |

How many of us were under the impression the Government would mothball the vulnerable, Care homes, over 70's, those with underlying comorbidities etc?
Like the guy says they've put us all under house arrest and crippled the economy. There's even talk of cutting furlough pay to 60% of people's wages as the scheme is unsustainable. Unemployment caused by businesses failing is about to go through the roof. Middle class people who have worked hard to build their livelihood and create jobs, are about to be introduced to Universal Credit with all the demeaning experiences that it brings. |

He's the brother of Christopher Hitchens, a philosopher, author , journalist, social critic etc. (deceased).
Christopher had a knack of taking people apart and exposing their hypocrisy, especially religious zealots. |

Peter and Mike Graham on Talk radio spar with each other every Monday at midday and is always a good listen. As far as i am concerned Hitchens speaks a lot of sense and i am firmly in his camp.Dithering Johnson already has lost my trust. One the furlough scheme is shelved or cutback the $hit really will hit the proverbial fan.

"Resist much, obey little, Once unquestioning obedience, once fully enslaved, Once fully enslaved, no nation..ever afterwards resumes its liberty". Why put most of the blame on Johnson? He is only carrying out the orders/script of his overlords. All politicians do. Society's(lower and middle)meek surrender of civil rights and economic independence bothers me more.

Protect the old/vulnerable properly and let everyone else (who has a tiny risk of dying) get on with it and build up herd immunity.
That was the plan and if all the resources had gone into that plan we would be in a much better place. One man forced the change to the plan. Neil Ferguson. A man who did not even believe in his own research enough to personally act on the advise to protect his mistress, her family and everyone she come into contact with coming across London to meet him. We need to seriously examine how Ferguson got so much power in this given his complete and utter failure at past predictions. Bringing him in on this would be like bringing in a non-league striker into the England team and then not know why we failed to score any goals. Its obvious. The way out of this is for Boris to admit he was duped, blame Ferguson and change tact. I cannot see that happening though. Boris will just keep digging instead. |

Hitchens has had a bit of a mare during this whole crisis. First he wrote an article comparing death numbers from previous years with no lockdown and no pandemic with this year and asked what is all the fuss is about? Totally missing the point and ignoring the effect of the lockdown, like a lot of posters on here. Then he wrote another article ackowledging that the lockdown was having an effect in somewhat of a climbdown from his earlier article.
Once again he has missed the point here too. It's not about saving lives primarily, it's about controlling the spread. It's not just a British issue either. There are epidemiologists the world over that agree that a spread that has been allowed to get out of hand (by incompetent inaction) must be controlled in order to avoid catastrophe. Note that Hitchens offers no scientific evidence or evidence from any experts that not locking down when the UK did would have avoided catastrophe or that releasing lockdown now wouldn't result in the spread getting out of hand again very quickly. Even the Swedish epidemiologist took measures to control the spread when he needed to. Britain's problem is that they didn't until it was too late. Hitchens is right to criticise them for this but seems to be directing his criticism more at the measures taken rather than more correctly the inaction that made them inevitable. |
|
By:
How many deaths should Ferguson have predicted in order to get Boris to deal with the spread even earlier then? 1m? 2m? Because the inaction of Boris etc is the problem, not Ferguson. Boris is more concerned with the economy and the rich guys backing his party. He is conflicted like most politicians. The Swedish guy is concerned with the spread of the disease and controlling it, which is his area of expertise. The economy comes second to that.

Yes it's funny how quickly peoples opinions change when this disease affects someone they love.

People under 40 never needed 'protecting' and house arrest. |

PH has not had a nightmare at all. From the very start he has been consistent in every article he has penned. He has never advocated that physical distancing was a bad idea.He maintains ,and i agree, the Government have massively over reacted and sensible precautions such as set out by Inside Trader should have been implemented...instead he took the advice of failed Professor Ferguson and is now well and truly trapped.

So they didn't need to stop spreading it then?

I am talking from a standpoint of having done nothing in the early stages and letting the spread get out of hand.
If they had protected the elderly from day one it might have been different but they didn't. |
