Good idea! Chess always seems so confusing but then again I’ve never really looked into it. Think I’ll have a go
|
By:
Yeah, me to. Wish I'd learned how to play but like SteVo says, " seems confusing", complicated, too much thinking involved. Must be a great asset with this lock-down business going on. Wouldn't want to think about it now, I'm just a few years south of seventy.

Well worth downloading onto your phone. It uses the ELO system so you can see/track improvement. Im currently 1653 rating, peaked at 1678, though i think im more 1560ish just had a good run. |

Jeremy Vine was promoting Chess the other day and he 'started' a game
against one of his guests. He is not aware of algebraic notation and announced his first move was pawn to queen 3 but he actually moved it to queen 4, his opponent replied with pawn to rook 3 but again moved it to rook 4.Fortunately we were spared any more moves so i guess it was a draw |
By:
Looking back he should have played it differently

The elo rankings are not foolproof I lost to someone well below me in the rankings. I think they managed to bring me down to their level.

So, Won 1, Lost 3! |
By:
like me, darren ive learnt a few things, i didnt know that,, if the opponent has only a few pieces left and isnt in check, and if his only move is puts himself into check mate its a draw, and also i didnt know that if say 3 of your pawns get to other end you can swop them for 3 queens if you want ,
norfolk, im playing level 5 getting hammered but i went level 1 yesterday for 3 matches, score 2-1 computer . |
By:
just heard on talksport now, brian orr of betfair after the above disclosure

I used to be ok at chess but not played for years..must find and dust off my chessmaster CD -ROM.
My advice to new players is that's its all about the defence. I'm guessing you are playing like a Kevin Keegan team advancing all the pieces all over the shop and getting picked off. I would say pretend you are Jose Mourinho and park the bus! Create a tight defensive pawn structure, castle your king and bring your knights over the king side as defence and then be patient. |

Good documentary on Amazon about the current world champion and considered the greatest of all time Magnus Carlsen..called Magnus. Unbelievable the level he is at.

I used to be fairly useful in my much younger days. Got my grade up to 1905 at one time. Haven't played for many a year so doubt I could play to 1500 now but I am tempted to find out!
|
By:
1905 would be top 10 out of 7200+ players in GB on the site, (even 1500 would be well inside the top 10%) plus it would be top board at chess clubs.
2000 is considered expert and would be entering very high standard chess comps |
By:
|
By:
what do you mean by grade politics/maleuk
|
By:
1905 would put you around the top 500 active players in the UK certainly you would be considerd a very good club player - International master is around the 2300 mark and grandmaster around 2500. Magnus Carlsen and the super GM's are 2800+
|
By:
When you are starting to play in adult tournaments (I was about 15) you don't have a grade, so you enter the lowest section of tournaments, which is for lowest rated and ungraded players. Weekend tournaments are in sections so that everyone gets five games against folks of their own grade. I won five tournaments in my first season before the grader caught up with me, a bit like the handicapper at horse racing.

Apologies, didn't mean to get into a dispute with anyone. I'm interested to see how the new players get on with this and wish you well. Please keep us updated.
