as a newbie to chess, how do you look at all the grid positions posted on this thread and know what is what and who is going to win straight away lol ?
Some folks (the best players) can just work it out in their head. I can't, I have a board beside my computer.

A pre-move being when you make a move when your opponent is thinking. It's obviously not shown on the board but regardless of your opponent's move that is the move you make (if it's still legal). It's done to save time.
When Charlie posted that, it reminded me of the two guys who were playing postal chess (pre computer internet days). You made a move and posted it off to your opponent for him to move and reply. Anyway the first fella makes his first move 1.e4 His opponent posts back 1..g6 with a note to say that whichever move you play I am going to play 2..Bg7. So his opponent posted back his second move, 2.Bh6 !
