...yet puzzlingly none of them were arrested by West Midlands Police officers called to the scene by rightly-concerned cemetery staff.

A quite astonishing statement by the already beleaguered WMP laughably asserted that the mourners were observing social distancing protocols, but photographic and witness evidence from the scene clearly exposes this is as a falsehood.

What was so special about this group of people that the rules seemingly did not apply to them, and as such have avoided arrest?

Meanwhile, the MP is reported to have attended a SECOND funeral that day that attracted 20 mourners, again completely flouting the restrictions, but still not the subject of any police investigation.

To arrest people at a funeral would be unacceptable.

Agree the MP should be setting an example though.

Would have to agree with that. Would appear the number restriction is purely advisory rather than law. Poor behaviour from the MP. Hopefully his party will react.

A Labour MP has been blasted for "endangering lives" by attending a large funeral and ignoring coronavirus lockdown measures.

Tahir Ali was also criticised as "totally irresponsible" by West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, David Jamieson.

Report seems a bit odd in that by the time plod arrived, the number of mourners was reduced and practising social distancing. All very mysterious.

West Midlands Police confirmed it was called to Sutton New Hall Cemetery following reports of a large crowd of people.

"On arrival, officers found approximately 15 people socially-distanced into family groups, therefore no action was taken," the force said.

Now, the local limit appears to be six mourners so 15 is well above that but is it so outrageous that people call the police? It is not at all clear what went on. Could there originally have been two overlapping funeral groups whose large combined size provoked the calls to the police? I'm in the dark.

You reckon some of these guys would go to a funeral, not adhering to social distancing, if they or their loved ones were to die?

Full sympathy for anyone involved in any funeral during this crisis..

...but surely a member of parliament should confirm to government recommendations. Set some sort of example. People all over the country will now have the chance to say.. Fk it... I'm going to that funeral just like that mp did.

But you guys think this MP is a pariah and should be ashamed of himself for attending a funeral, even though social distancing was observed.

What do you feel about the people in charge allowing this illness to come into the country?

Of course politicians should be role models in parts of live, but is the UK population that immature to be so heavily influenced by this particular event? You've got politicians from all over not adhering to the rules.

In the US you have the entire gang still standing shoulder to shoulder, using the same podiums, microphones etc.
In the UK you had leading politicians shaking hands with everyone in a hospital, boasting about it, and I think distance at podiums wasn't 2m either (though could be wrong on this)
In the Netherlands you had Mark Rutte hold a press conference telling everyone that there must absolutely not be any hand shaking anymore...only for him to shake the hand of his podium partner. Upon being told what he just did, he laughs and touches the other person yet more closely in a bizarre turn of events.

I mean...would people really go like "Oh, Mark Rutte shook hands. Now I will!"

I'm not getting involved in anyone's arguments..

But the point here is ..... We have all been told that funerals are restricted to a maximum of 6 people. Weddings etc have been cancelled.
This guy turns up at someone's funeral and there are about 100 people there.

As an MP he should not have attended. If he had not attended, we would never have heard anything about this particular funeral.

I agree with that, mecca, but I also don't think it will really have consequences.

As flushgordon1 so elaborately pointed out, it's mostly a load of virtue-signalling from the thread starter and a few others.

FFS edy give yerself a brek.
We're at war with a virus and the only way we can hope to beat it is with social distancing and self isolation.
Was an msp not only flaunting the law but encouraging people to do so. F*cking irresponsible behaviour by both.

I simply don't think people will be heavily impressed and influenced by this.

Or did the broader British public suddenly go into hospitals, hugging everyone, after Boris bragged about having shaken everyone's hand at a hospital at which he said there had been corona patients at the time?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2020/mar/27/i-shook-hands-with-everybody-says-boris-johnson-weeks-before-coronavirus-diagnosis-video

No, of course they didn't. Similarly, people were going to, or not going to, funerals and follow the rules there or not. Regardless of this no name MP that I reckon most will have never heard of before.

...and Boris, for his part, even saying he fully intends to continue shaking hands (which obviously not only creates physical contact, but will also likely create less than 2m of face to face distance).

Did you go and be all "Blimey, if he does it, then so will I!"? Or did you go all "What a clown"?

The Prime Minister, The Health Secretary and the Chief Medical Officer all got the Corona Virus

They did not follow the correct social distancing protocols they were preaching!

Not only did they not observe the two meter distancing they held a meeting in a confined Downing Street room crammed full of Journalists and News Crews.

Is that responsible behaviour compared to the irresponsible behaviour of this MP?
