I have been thinking how did they do so well to 'only' have 3,200 death given how much covering up there was in the first month by local officials. We then look at the rest of the world and deaths in Italy, Spain, New York etc and we hear officials in democratic countries saying tens of thousands are likely to die. So are the China numbers real?

If they are fake is that not really bad for the rest of the world as it meant we did not take the threat seriously enough to start with?

This article in the mail (I know, I know the Mail is not liked on here) suggests the China numbers might be too low.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8165717/Locals-Wuhan-believe-42-000-people-died-coronavirus.html

Locals in Wuhan believe 42,000 people may have died in the coronavirus outbreak there not the 3,200 claimed by Chinese authorities

Wuhan locals claim coronavirus has killed 42,000 people in the city alone, more than ten times the national figure claimed by Chinese authorities.

The killer bug, which originated in Wuhan in China's Hubei Province has claimed the lives of 3,300 people and infected more than 81,000.

Of those, 3,182 deaths were reported in Hubei Province.

But residents in Wuhan claim 500 urns have been handed out to grieving families every day from seven separate funeral homes all serving the city.......

Is this really worthy of a new thread?  How does this astonishing whataboutism help with the situation that we find ourselves?
Report Petraco March 30, 2020 2:00 PM BST
I realise this is only anecdotal evidence but I work with a lady who was born in Wuhan, and still has family there, and from late January she was telling me that the Chinese authorities had been covering up the amount of deaths from early on.  Her family were telling of hundreds each day, and bear in mind they were in lockdown even those figures were probably on the low side.
Report mafeking March 30, 2020 2:29 PM BST
can probably add a couple of noughts on the official Chinese figure. in any case who in the west would believe a single thing ever reported by the Chinese authorities ? a bucket load of salt is needed
Report PorcupineorPineapple March 30, 2020 2:32 PM BST
I'd imagine most western countries would have had enough dealings with China to know if the figures were real or not. My guess is they've been massively under-reported but then our authorities would have been aware of that better than anyone.

The real knowledge was in the pathology of the virus, not in any numbers. Once you knew what it did, how contagious it was and - importantly - how easily it could be spread by people not yet showing any symptoms then that should have put every country on red alert.

For us, we did well with that guy from Brighton who went from Singapore to the Alps and then home. We tested, traced, isolated and cared for the affected there well.

That should have been enough of an indication of how serious this had the potential to be.

Once the virus escaped in Lombardy we should have been looking at the number of flights coming in from Milan, sh!t ourselves and reacted far stronger and quicker than we eventually did.

That's where the damage was done.

dave, had they warned the rest of the world about how bad it really was, they might have prepared earlier, differently and better?
Report Petraco March 30, 2020 2:34 PM BST
Another anecdote, but one that will never be able to be proven by the West is that the local Chinese in Wuhan have never believed it had its source in the market...  Look at the local research laboratories and check their personnel records for a more likely origin of the virus.

It's not just the numbers from China but also their actions. They were criticising countries for putting up travel restrictions when the WHO declared a global health emergency, now they're doing the exact same since the problem has shifted abroad.

uk deaths in last 24 hrs down again,if the lockdown hasn't took effect yet does this mean we,ll miss the 1000 a day numbers from Italy spain,
or as uk are only counting deaths in hospital, only counting deaths signed off by relatives etc are our numbers worse than useless as a guide
Report sageform March 30, 2020 3:10 PM BST
We don't know how early the first case in China was but once they decided to clamp down they were very efficient. Not sure citizens of most countries would tolerate police walking into their homes and taking contacts of infected individuals away by force.
Report cooperman March 30, 2020 3:21 PM BST
They initially tried to blacken the name of the whistleblower Doctor who tried to make people aware of the problem. Don't think anyone has placed trust in the numbers declared by the Chinese and I'm told that regional party leaders were reluctant to pass on correct numbers in case it reflected badly on them.

43,000 mentioned in whuan rather than the 3000 delared
Report saddo March 30, 2020 3:35 PM BST
If they deliberately failed to warn us of the extent and virulence of the virus, why would they do that? To maximise the damage to the rest of the world economy? Can't have been simple embarrassment.

the UK failed to act when the who told them to act, they are playing their own system ,i hope they are correct. The USA are also playing their own system.

inj - if any flights are allowed at all, there should be a bilateral agreement where all passengers and staff are tested at gates and then also when they land with both countries agreeing to the standards.

Given the damage this has already done, it's f*&^ing irresponsible to be on the brink of getting on top of it but potentially allowing in new infectees unchecked. Just the height of stupidity.

The timings been excellent for the Chinese, what with Presidential Elections just around the corner and Trump having been a nightmare for them. Trumps second term very much depended on the situation with the USA economy.
