Terry, the barbaric wet markets haven't been going for centuries.   They're a fairly recent thing (culturally), started in late 70s, part of Chairman Mao's disastrous "great leap" programme.

The Chinese government are 100% culpable for this, they allow (and encourage) the disgusting conditions in these markets to continue, it was only a matter of time before a dangerous virus jumped from animal to human.
And they are also culpable for covering it up, for weeks and weeks, which allowed it to spread globally and cause a pandemic.
The only thing they have gotten right is the speed of response in locking down their own people and flattening the curve of infection. But that is no reason to pat them on the back.
And don't be taken in by the new narrative about them coming to the rescue of the rest of the world, supplying masks etc. I mean, seriously
They are not the heroes here, quite the opposite.

I think you've just got to take responsibility for what you can. Some of the food practices in more exotic places are frankly disgusting and clearly unhygenic. That said, swine flu ten years ago began in the States with unhygenic farming practices.

Is the answer to have some kind of World Police and a one-market stylee set of global regulations that we all have to adhere to? Is that what the Trump/Bojo fanboys are championing?


Anyhoo, my anger is aimed squarely at what we can control. I was listening in growing anxiety to R4 late last year as this was spreading through China and wondering then what we were doing. Turns out it was nothing.

Now we find out that the government did a dummy pandemic run in 2016 and the results were so bad that they hushed them up. Even worse, they hushed them up and ignored them, doing absolutely nothing to correct the failings.

And then this year, while Bojo is going on This Morning saying how we should just let the virus run riot and how he was shaking hands with everyone, we were allowing passengers in from Lombardy completely unchecked despite that area being the worst affected region in the western world. Soon after, Madrid caught up and we decided to allow thousands of Atleti fans to travel to Liverpool and then have hundreds of thousands of people to meet up in Cheltenham, and give wishy washy messages to businesses to close that saw them all remain open.

If we'd taken this more seriously from the get go we could be looking forward to coming out of it in a couple of weeks, not six months plus.

Who's example would we have followed to be coming out of this in two weeks? No European country has fully prepared for what they are now getting.

The example of how pandemics spread, and closing down quicker, testing, contact testing. Being prepared with plenty of test kits, proper protective kits for medical professionals, more capacity etc.

This was all foreseeable months ago. We did nothing.
