ok lets see how many more people die over the next 12 months the figures could show a narked drop off in the back end of the year due to seriously ill people dying off sooner rather than later. The numbers are still quite low considering the reaction
Report Injera March 28, 2020 9:23 PM GMT
Good point macarony.

Could be a high total for ‘20 and lower in ‘21. Nothing will be said though.

Number of deaths in Spain .

2018    474,523  = 1300 per day.
2017    424,523  = 1163
2016    410,611
2015    422,568

Massive jump from ‘17.

Incredible differences in Spain.
Report Angoose March 28, 2020 9:28 PM GMT
And your analysis of this says  .......
Report Mexico March 28, 2020 9:28 PM GMT
Macarony

Have you considered the possibility that the numbers are still quite low BECAUSE of the reaction.

There was a report that 500,000 would die if we basically do f-all. The 20,000 is a "low" figure because we are not behaving normally.

is that theory a bit complex to understand?
Report Angoose March 28, 2020 9:32 PM GMT
There is no number or set of actions that will cause the deniers to think rationally.
The more evidence that is presented, the more they will retreat in to their insular worlds of conspiracy.

Long-term the effects can go either way.

On the one hand we could see a drop off in pollution and less impact of climate change.

But the flip side, the economic implication could result in more poverty and food poverty, how many people have had different types of hospital treatment cancelled, already increased reported numbers of domestic violence across the world.

Report Injera March 28, 2020 9:39 PM GMT
A 50k increase in Spanish deaths from 17 to 18 is significant. Did the football season finish that year?
Report macarony March 28, 2020 9:42 PM GMT
Mexico do you belive that the cause of action we are taking is going to have one iota of difference? vunreable people are still having to fend for themselves by going out the house for basic requirements.
If the government had proveded for them then they could have self isolated in safety while the rest of society went about their normal business, because this virus will have little or no impact on the vast majority of the population
Report Angoose March 28, 2020 9:43 PM GMT
So go and so some research and see what the underlying causes were determined to be.
Report Angoose March 28, 2020 9:45 PM GMT
macaroni, how old are you, just give a range if you don’t want to be precise.
Also, can you provide some idea of the basis for your analysis, they may want to recruit you at Imperial College.
Report Angoose March 28, 2020 9:46 PM GMT
Cummings was also looking for some new staff.
Report Mexico March 28, 2020 9:47 PM GMT
Yes Macarony

I do believe that the course of action we are taking is going to have one iota of difference. I believe "social distancing " will help medics & reduce number of deaths.

So do you believe carrying on as normal or staying this "lockdown " will result in basically the same amount of hospital cases & sane amount of deaths?
Report Injera March 28, 2020 9:49 PM GMT
If the lockdown is proved to be effective, it could be used every year there’s a spike in winter deaths..
Report jucel69 March 28, 2020 9:57 PM GMT
What is this obsession about number of deaths?
That isn't what this is about
The lock down is about the fact this virus makes a lot more people critically ill and thus need ventilation, long spells in hospital
They are trying not to overwhelm the NHS, plus they don't want the doctors to be put into position where they are choosing who lives and dies, based on criteria. These people would ordinarily live in normal circumstances if ventilated.
Imagine the mental disintegration of that over a period of time
Think about what the doctors and nurses are going through, they are only human.
The mental cost will be huge for both doctors and nurses.
About 50 doctors have died in Italy, that's years and years of experience and skill wiped out in a few weeks. Add many more nurses etc the results are catastrophic
We need to look past the deaths to the social/economic ramifications, they are huge and will be felt for years
Report Mexico March 28, 2020 9:58 PM GMT
Yep

Or maybe they could offer vulnerable groups a vaccine to keep down hospital visits to a level the NHS could cope with.

Wonder why the government haven't offered everybody a vaccine for the Covid19 virus. Very strange- it is almost as if they don't have a vaccine.
Report jucel69 March 28, 2020 10:00 PM GMT
Nobody has a vaccine yet
Report Mexico March 28, 2020 10:05 PM GMT
A good point Jucel.

Does cut down options for government, they basically say stay at home to try and limit spread or carry on and accept that NHS can't cope & over hundred thousand people die (maybe 500k)

Not really a choice, which I guess is why every country is doing something similar.
Report Cardinal Scott March 28, 2020 10:06 PM GMT
Imagine the glory for which country wins the race for the vaccine

Report macarony March 28, 2020 10:07 PM GMT
yes mexico it will make no difference at all because people are still going out to shop etc and this 2m apart and face masks and gloves will not stop the spread of the virus because most transmission is throught the soft membrane in the eye and nose.
Closeing down most businesses will only result in wrecking the economy with pratical benefit what so ever.
My wife works in the care industry and I have done most of her repetative annual coursework for the last 12 years, pointless and repetative time wasting done in your own time not theirs

Very easy to find an extra £10bn a year - just stick 2p on basic income tax.

Meanwhile every scientist says this virus will overwhelm the NHS & every country has imposed various forms of social distancing.
Mac - you seem to be playing the part of Tom Baker/Captain Rum in saying "Opinion is devided on this"

500,00 dead is the prediction of doing basically nothing. & economy would still take a hit - nobody would allow anyone from UK to enter their country for months if we did f-all.

The lockdown bans people from going to their allotments.

I guess the second line was just a joke and not to be taken seriously.
