Ironically if he'd torched a few copies of Rushdie's Satanic Verses they would have been happy to add fuel to the fire . Why is 'blasphemy' a one-way street ? Confused

Total control over hearts and minds.
All scripture is based on a tried and tested formula thousands of years old. you can have vanilla, chocolate chip or pistachio flavoured, take your pick. Or did your parents pick one for you?

. Or did your parents pick one for you? Foinavon

Which is why we must ensure our state education system teaches ALL children the choices we have in this country

I see no need to be silly about this teaching LGBT stuff to 4 year olds.....

But at the appropriate age ALL children must know of this to enable them to make their own choice

If they choose Islam that is also their right...as long as it is their own choice

foinavon just because your parents happened to pick the religion you were brought up in doesn't mean necessarily that is a bad thing
You see not all religions are equal. After all, im pretty sure there is a good chance that you are Christian brought up in a Christian family
There you go, be thankful.

Happy fair enough ebul, but please look at it this way

you are Christian, there are certain aspects of Christianity that tend towards freedom of the individual, its teachings can be traced back to the example of Christ , and further back to ancient Greece

That's different from other religions I am afraid, the muslim religion? It traces itself back to the example of muhummad

that's not good, sorry.
By:
lfc1971
When: 16 Feb 20 17:33
An example? well if I was to post those words in certain muslim countries , there is every chance that I could be in very severe trouble

and worse than that, so don't talk tripe about allowing children being allowed to make up their own minds

All religions are not equal in outcome, that's true, it's what society does with the control that matters. Living in a Christian society a few hundred years ago, even 200 years ago would not seem all that different to living in an Islamic country today from the point of view of personal freedoms, blasphemy, attitudes to women, draconian punishment for even relatively minor offences, sexual deviancy from the approved norm and just about everything else. We should be glad we live in a more enlightened society today even if some sectors appear to be taking things a bit too far for our own tastes.

Just a minute foinavon, do you not know that the protestant reformation took place in the 16 century
200 years ago . The age of enlightenment dominated Christian European thinking and freedoms in the 17th to 19th century

I realise that lfc and it started a process but look at the lives of ordinary people at the turn of the 19th century and you will see what I mean. The things I mentioned are true. You could be hanged for theft, pilloried or put in the stocks. You could be jailed for homosexuality right up until the mid 20th century. Women's rights didn't improve any either until the Suffragettes arrived.
The problem for us with Islam in the West as I see it is that the controlling elites reside outside of Europe and any attempt at reform is proscribed by them and their obedient cohorts here.

lfc1971 - 16 Feb 20 17:47 - "Look I can assure you you could go back 200 yeaers to England or France or Holland or most European Christian countries and live as freely as you do here and now"

This is a ridiculous post, unless you have the narrowest view of freedom.

That's not 200 years ago. Fine perhaps if you belonged to the wealthy elites or ruling classes, try reading Zola or Dickens to see how the other half lived over there and over here.

You could try reading some Russian authors too. That was/is a Christian country apart from a few decades of the last century. First they had serfdom, then the had Lenin and Stalin. A most unlucky people.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment_in_the_United_Kingdom

Sir Samuel Romilly, speaking to the House of Commons on capital punishment in 1810, declared that "[there is] no country on the face of the earth in which there [have] been so many different offences according to law to be punished with death as in England".[2] Known as the "Bloody Code", at its height the criminal law included some 220 crimes punishable by death, including "being in the company of Gypsies for one month", "strong evidence of malice in a child aged 7–14 years of age" and "blacking the face or using a disguise whilst committing a crime". Many of these offences had been introduced by the Whig Oligarchy to protect the property of the wealthy classes that emerged during the first half of the 18th century, a notable example being the Black Act of 1723, which created 50 capital offences for various acts of theft and poaching.[3] Crimes eligible for the death penalty included shoplifting and stealing sheep, cattle, and horses, and before abolition of the death penalty for theft in 1832, "English law was notorious for prescribing the death penalty for a vast range of offences as slight as the theft of goods valued at twelve pence.

I assume that the death penalty for blacking up would be approved by some groups today Grin.
