ITV News presenter Alastair Stewart is stepping down from his role following "errors of judgment in Alastair's use of social media", ITN has said.

In a statement, the veteran broadcaster, 67, said: "It was a misjudgement which I regret."

ITN said he had breached editorial guidelines, but did not elaborate on the reasons for his departure.

He added: "It's been a privilege to bring the news to households throughout the UK for the past 40 years."

Stewart joined ITV in 1980 and began fronting News at Ten nine years later.

The newsreader's Twitter account has now been deactivated.

Fellow ITV newsreader Julie Etchingham wrote on Twitter: "So sad to learn this - we have worked on many big stories together & Al is a trusted friend and guide to many of us."

Michael Jermey, ITV director of news and current affairs, said in a statement: "Alastair has been a long-standing, familiar figure to viewers of ITV News, both reporting and presenting with distinction. We wish him the very best for the future."

ITN's chief executive Anna Mallett added: "We would like to recognise Alastair's contribution as one of the UK's foremost journalists and TV presenters and to thank him for his commitment to delivering high-quality broadcast news over many years."

During his career, Stewart has also hosted ITV's lunchtime and early evening news, as well as Channel 4 News and Police, Camera, Action!

He was named presenter of the year by the Royal Television Society Award in 2005, and was awarded an OBE the following year.

In 2010, he moderated the UK's first ever televised general election leaders' debate between David Cameron, Gordon Brown and Nick Clegg.

It was an error of judgement nevertheless, I've been called worse here. But, I'm no newscaster or someone famous whose professional position could be easily compromised.

Still a shame after such an illustrious career news reading and journalism. But, that's the power of social media.

Twitter users are now circulating a tweet which Alastair reportedly sent on 13 January 2020.

It quotes Shakespeare and was sent to a Twitter user, who happens to be black. ‘“But man, proud man, Dress’d in a little brief authority, Most ignorant of what he’s most assur’d – His glassy essence – like an angry ape”,’ the tweet read.

The Twitter user reposted the tweet and commented: ‘Just an @itv newsreader referring to me as an ape with the cover of Shakespeare.

The misjudgement is going on twitter in the first place. Do something wrong, and there are loads just waiting to be offended, and then your career is over, no second chances. Even some killers get a second chance, but not for social media mistakes. The World is fcking mad.

Sometimes one has to make a judgement on the event in question and not history eg business concerned could involved noise and pollution eg a waste dump; incinerator; a chicken factory; etc.

But, I cannot fault his professionalism in the media.

I don't think Shakespeare ever saw any black people

His passage was a comment on human nature???????

The play is set in Vienna???

If he had said this to a white person I doubt there would be a problem

But because he said it to a black person?????

it has seen as a racist comment

I think???

Things are getting out of hand. Shakespeare should be banned, I don't think this is the first time some of his words have finally been exposed as racist.

It's a leap of faith to go from quoting Shakespeare to calling someone an ape and then further understanding that as racism unless you already associate one with the other.

That's the problem. I don't know the man, and can very well imagine a 67 year old man not wanting to make a fuss, but if he doesn't want to stand up for himself and goes out with 'It was an error in judgement' then he is leaving the rest of us to deal with decades of this nonsense. If a journalist surrenders to this, what hope have the common folk got? Same goes for Jon Snow. Why do these guys apologize????

He was cornered as these internal policies now simply defer to the individual/complainant's interpretation. 'Leering' was recently added at my workplace. So if a female accuses you of leering, your career could be toast.

So ITV have rewarded one of their longest serving newsreaders with the sack , after one twitter user
picked out one word from a Shakespeare quote.
Well done ITV. The Beeb will be proud of you.
