Having a delivery service and a person to deliver food costs loads of money. What if someone told you they'll send a person to pick up and deliver your food and all you as the restaurant owner have to do is give them 30% of the sale of that order? Make sense now?

Also we are lazy. We don't have time to go and buy food when we can have it delivered at our doorstep for no extra cost. Make sense now?

Where I live the Deliveries are by Car , But of course in Luvvie London that would take too long ,So make sure there are some poor fookers at your beck n call ... Probably living 10 to a house if they are lucky , filling the Pockets of our Friedly Diverse Landlords.

Most up here on a set wage , Factored in with a small charge added , plus they get a tip as after  while  you know the various drivers ,Seen a few will bring the Kids with them , can you imagine that in London

None of that makes sense to me detraveller.  It is at extra cost, that's why it doesn't make sense.

I am not sure if I understand you properly. You asked what was the point of the app, the middleman bringing you the food, when you could directly call the restaurant's takeaway service?

I explained why its more profitable(or less expensive) for the restaurant to use that third party for food delivery. The restaurant only pays when there is an order, and then too a very small amount, compared to having a delivery boy available at all times with a vehicle. The cost difference is huge.

it's an extra cost to the consumer and the restaurant.  In reality market econmoics means it's borne by the consumer

They've thrown 100s of millions if not billions at it in advertising and set up costs.  It's the consumer that pays

Of course if an alternative is picking it up yourself then the delivery driver is a middleman too.  Our local curry house offers a 10% deduction if you pick it up yourself.

I had the opportunity to look at Lieferando's business. They are the german equivalent of Deliveroo.

Here, the customer doesn't pay anything extra. He can pick out any item from the restaurant's menu and have it delivered at his home for no extra cost. The restaurant does pay, but I am saying they pay less than what they would if they had their own delivery service.

For instance, one restaurant I looked at had about 5-6 Lieferando drivers present there at one point. Each driver had 2 orders. The prep time for the orders was under 10 min and the delivery time under 15 mins. Getting the orders to the restaurant and relaying it to a driver also took about 1-10 mins, depending on the time of the day. Can you do a cost comparison for a restaurant giving out 30% on a delivery of 12 orders(avg order cost 15 Euros) within an hour compared to the same restaurant having to deliver 12 orders using its own staff and vehicles? Surely the app/middleman is the better option for the restaurant?

The prices maybe the same but the consumer pays with higher prices.  Of course if you are savvy like aour local curry house, you recognise this by offering discounts for collection.  Take aways should be cheaper, they don't need waiters and as large premises.

well detraveller you are wrong on 2 counts.

1. You are not comparing like with like.  Like for like is takeaway v takeaway, not takeaway v sit down
2. If costs go up, prices go up.

I do have the feeling that we probably aren't talking about the same things. But I fail to understand why you keep saying the costs increase. Let's consider a restaurant. Its delivery costs are $x. Using Lieferando, it reduces its delivery costs by half. What costs are going up, that you think are passed to the consumer?

If of course the cost to the consumer for a takeaway is the same for picking it up as it is for having it delivered, they won't pick it up.  I don't get why a restaurant would want that.

Yes the costs are the same. And yes that puts the restaurant at a disadvantage and I have wondered that too, as some of the deliveries Lieferando has to do are less than 50m away. That is indeed a problem, but probably the restaurant has to do what the otehrs are doing in its neighborhood.

By the way the app isn't a profitable business in my opinion. Lieferando's running at a loss, an awful amount of money spend on ads, offers and equipment. Earning potential is limited. Probably just investing into the future as they keep buying any small company that crops us offering the same service.

From experience,the delivery side of a takeaway is by far the biggest headache.its probably the nature of the job but it does attract more than its fair share of ne er do wells.if you find a clean polite reliable driver with a reliable motor then he’s gold dust.iv seen all sorts over the years,drivers clearing off with the money,drivers pretending they’ve been robbed,untaxed cars uninsured drivers,drivers selling drugs along with the food.one woman sold school holiday weeks holidays10 times over in a non existent caravan taking all deposits & did a runner,apparently the shop was overrun for weeks with irate holidaymakers!
If you can outsource all that **** then it’s a no brainer
