Poor land management. The Aboriginals knew the importance of controlled burns but the enviros in recent times put a stop to that, resulting in a large tinderbox just waiting to go up.

Really sad what is happening not just to the people and their homes but the animals. This is an absolute disaster. The land will recover in time but how long will it take for the animal population to come back.
I remember back in the day the Abo's used to burn the grass but it was stopped. They regarded themselves as custodians of the earth. It is not just the political equilibrium that has been upset. I am not saying the planet is on the brink but we are having so many warnings but allowing our leaders to ignore them. I am not saying the Paris Summit Agreement on Climate Change was right or wrong but many people on these forum's lauded Donald Chump for withdrawing America from it. There will be a price to pay. |

they stopped the firebreak activity - you know who can thank for that
and they say they are saving the planet same with the somerset levels etc etc yawn!!! |

183 arrested for arson
Our media prefer to ignore this.More than 180 alleged arsonists have been arrested since the start of the bushfire season, with 29 blazes deliberately lit in the Shoalhaven region of southeast NSW in just three months. https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/bushfires-firebugs-fuelling-crisis-asarson-arresttollhits183/news-story/52536dc9ca9bb87b7c76d36ed1acf53f |

Arsonists should be prosecuted for potential manslaughter when a firefighter dies in such a blaze.

Scientists do not say that climate change is causing the fires, but believe it is amplifying the conditions necessary for firestorms to form. Physicist Scott Menor said that even if all the fires were started by arson, 'climate change made the difference between throwing a match in water to throwing it in gasoline'. In addition, analysis by Dr Timothy Graham from the Queensland University of Technology suggests that there may be a deliberate misinformation campaign on Twitter to cast doubt on the effect of climate change. Tweets with the hashtag #ArsonEmergency were more likely to come from suspect accounts than others such as #AustraliaFire, he found, according to ZDNet. |

Personally I have no idea. Climate change doesn't seem to clever though.

greens are responsible along with the arsonists
we had a completely different situation in the 'levels' in somerset back when we had a fierce onshore wind and very high tide and flooding occurred - the water had no where to go as the capacity to take extra had been removed by a slavish acceptance by DEfra of an eu directive to protect wildlife. The regular dredging of rivers streams and 'drains' was halted some years before. Locals told them but were ignored. don't you love a good green |

That is a ludicrous statement. Oz and fires go back a long time.... The 1851 Black Thursday bush fires were when the hills were alight to the Alps themselves – a frightful day as the temperature in Melbourne rose to 47degrees centigrade (110 degrees on the old scale) at 11 am. Melbourne Town was in grave danger of destruction by encircling bush fire. Approximately 12 lives, 1,000,000 sheep and thousands of cattle were lost. http://chig.asn.au/the-devastating-black-thursday-bushfires-of-1851/ |

By:
the point is there are loads of reasons NOT JUST CLIMATE CHANGE I would imagine 180 plus arsonists might have something to do with it

Arson???? What arson....?
Oh... A 19-year-old volunteer fire fighter in Australia has been charged with arson and accused of lighting seven fires in the Bega Valley area, New South Wales. (2019) The NSW police service's Strikeforce Tronto investigated 1,500 suspicious fires from 2001 to 2004. These investigations resulted in 50 people being charged, and 11 of them were volunteer firefighters – out of a then 69,000 NSW RFS members. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/11/27/australian-firefighter-accused-arson-record-bush-fires-ultimate/ |

Charlie, are you suggesting it wasn't 47 degrees in 1851?
Maybe it wasn't. Maybe it was hotter.... |

I would suggest it wasn't 47 degrees in 1851. It may have been higher it may have been lower. There are great difficulties in confirming temperatures from that long ago. |

kamikaze raised some questions about historical temperatures recorded by BOM (and others) which I sort of quickly dismissed. Since then I investigated what he was saying and can see the difficulties of relying or dismissing historical data. My guess is it's not reliable. |
