I'd have thought almost impossible all drown at the same time, hotel complex quick to clam nothing wrong with the pump and put out stories  of family not being able to swim, I'd hazard a guess there was definitely was something wrong that caused a lot of sudden suction, pool so small no lifeguard even needed. Seems to me the club la costa trying to cover themselves from fines/being sued/bad rep etc

It does seem hard to believe, i do agree.

I can’t imagine a swimming pool pump having sufficient power to hold a grown man underwater.

My initial thought was faulty electrics.

None of them could swim.
The youngest slipped into the deep end, her brother went after her and also got into trouble and the old man jumped in as well.
No surprise they all drowned.

People of their background can have very poor buoyancy and will sink if they don't know what to do.
The idea that we all float is a myth.

Possibly the saddest Christmas storey ive ever heard... Couldn't comprehend any possible chain of events, till I realised they were African. (really hope that's not Racist) Sad

the pool was small, I doubt the deep end was that deep at all and not deep enough for a grown man to drown in, you wouldn't need to swim far just clamber or splash your way to the side, of course if the daughter was caught on something possible the dad and son refused to come up trying to untangle her? though I'd have thought both would have come up for air, seems like some kind of suction issue

Does seem odd. Even if you can't swim you may be able to propel yourself off the floor to get to the surface.

Absolutely horrific.

surely cant be because they couldnt swim, wondering why nobody else jumped in to save them if this was the case
By:

Well it wouldn't be because they could swim would it. Perhaps there was no one around, perhaps it was early, perhaps it was late.  Too many early and inappropriate guesses on here imo.

yeh I make it heavy odds against, the pool wasnt deep and it doesnt take a genius to tread water#

Grant - How deep was the pool?.  How many people who can't swim can tread water?  See what I mean about guessing?

and it doesnt take a genius to tread water#

It would take more than being a genius if the one in the water suffers with negative buoyancy.
That's why they're non-swimmers in the first place.

People just don't get it, they think because they float like a turd in a p!ss pot then everybody does.

Most people can keep their heads well out of the water and all they have to do is to remain vertical.
They could last for hours in the water.

While other who are very good swimmers, would get exhausted in no time treading water because they're simply not buoyant, they have to work hard to keep their heads above the water.

It's not something that can be achieved, you either float or you don't.

Cannot imagine how as a parent you would take your kids anywhere near a pool if you do not have the swimming ability to save them  , especially with no lifeguard in attendance .....

Not sure what you mean by another guess .
I am a parent , and my children would not be at a pool without a swimming life guard if I could not swim .....not a guess

no harm is discussing the possibilities as long as we're being respectful, the family are not going to be reading this forum either.

I've just never heard of 3 people all drowning in a relatively small pool that can't be deeper that 6ft even at the deeper end.

The mum just released a statement that said they all knew how to swim and the kids were not unattended, both kids were drawn to the middle of the pool suddenly, the dad went into get them and they drownedSad
By:

Sixtwosix - me too.

But the fact that no one in the party could swim AND that there was no lifeguard in attendance is simply reportage, and not yet fact. So you are guessing about the "facts" of the case.

sixtwosix - Darren's post counters yours, and actually counters his own original post. If you don't understand the danger of ill-informed speculation and guesswork , I feel sorry for you.

Darren - your 20.59 post is a mixture of cop-out and more guesswork. You have even produced more guesswork that fails to support your own guesswork

God! - what kind of people are you to post such ill-considered ill-researched accusatory basic claptrap based simply on what you've read in the news.

clue is in the name...chit-chat!  we're not the mainstream media where what they say actually has an effect as they're broadcasting to potentially millions, us 1 man and his dog!, what's said here has zero effect on anything and if it upsets you might not want to read the thread!

what is correct is that whether you can swim or not it's not that deep, pool looks like it cannot be deeper than 6ft so must have been a temporary pump glitch?
By:
blackbarn
When: 27 Dec 19 21:54
Darren - Is that really the best you can do by way of an argument?

Originally you claimed they all drowned at the same time, you claimed a suction problem, you claimed a pool so small, you claimed the resort were trying to cover themselves. All guesswork.

You then claimed intimate knowledge of the pool in question - "the pool was small, I doubt the deep end was that deep at all and not deep enough for a grown man to drown in, you wouldn't need to swim far just clamber or splash your way to the side. All guesswork.

You now post "I've just never heard of 3 people all drowning in a relatively small pool that can't be deeper that 6ft even at the deeper end".
I'll leave this one cos it makes you look sillier.

You say "The mum just released a statement that said they all knew how to swim and the kids were not unattended, both kids were drawn to the middle of the pool suddenly, the dad went into get them and they drowned" So where are we now with your guesswork?

Frankly I don't know, but then neither do you, but then I am not the one professing to know what happened. You are.

wow what a way to derail a thread, I'm not a serious person no need to roll up your sleeves and start beating your chest lol, politics is 1 door down. I don't have intimate knowledge of a pool, there's the widely circulated picture, that's it, of course it's all speculation, I did not know you decided what could or couldn't be posted, I need to read forum guidelines maybeCrazy

Apparently the little girl told the police that none of the three could swim, and now the mother has said they could all swim.
By:

When: 27 Dec 19 22:58
Nine year old girl had a few lessons in water in which she could touch the bottom. Others couldn't swim. She slipped and drifted out to the deep end. Brothers gone in, dads gone in. Happened at 2pm and clearly happened very quickly.

If you can't swim, you can't swim. From experience of teaching my little one, I'd hazard a guess that very few people can tread water but can't swim. Factor in the panic and it's easier than you think to drown.

Very sad.

of course it's guesswork and speculation that's the point didn't say I wasn't, I did not know it wasn't allowed..did derail but nvm!

in general with swimmers who are black or darker skinned, I have heard the Buoyancy theory before which I think was born out simple anlaysis that there are no black Olympic swimming champions, I always thought that it was partly to do with no culture of swimming in many African countries in the same way we are not good at winter sports because we have no really culture/interest in it, and partly because of a lack of facilities/funds....I remember Eric the Eel at the Sydney Olympics who said he trained in a 25 meter pool in someone's back garden!
By:

When: 27 Dec 19 23:32
Darren - now you are really clutching at straws.  I will leave the black swimmers argument to others to explore the facts.

You said.......

"the pool was small, I doubt the deep end was that deep at all and not deep enough for a grown man to drown in"
"relatively small pool that can't be deeper that 6ft even at the deeper end".
"what is correct is that whether you can swim or not it's not that deep, pool looks like it cannot be deeper than 6ft so must have been a temporary pump glitch"

These are your words. Others will decide whether you are an expert or simply not that bright.
By:
darren_discombobulates_sports
When: 27 Dec 19 23:47
yes those are my words entirely, from the photo of the pool it's not an ocean or an Olympic sized swimming pool, it's for families, one small enough for the chain not to even bother allocating a lifeguard to, it's a normal pool in a hotel complex, therefore unlikely to be very deep and unlikely for 3 people at once to drown at once, and as said in another post that one could also push themselves up in fairly quick time from the bottom if in trouble hence speculation about a faulty pump, not sure what is so controversial here. I wouldn't say I was bright but I'm bright enough to save money where I can, I've had the same broom for 20 years, it's had 17 new heads and 14 new handles.

It must be hard for you to get out of a serious subject with a aged joke.  However, to be serious, is that the actual pool?  I don't know which pool you are looking at but more importantly neither do you. It must be reassuring for you to still have enough info to know what happened.
By:

Darren - you also said this......

"and as said in another post that one could also push themselves up in fairly quick time from the bottom if in trouble hence speculation about a faulty pump, not sure what is so controversial here"

Do you stand by this statement or might a reasonably intelligent poster think you are an ill-informed fruitcake. Just wondering??

I'm hoping you've had a drink (or two) and will apologise for the unnecessary (and undeserved) personal abuse tomorrow, if not, I don't really do slanging matches so you've made your point in your own way anyhow, goodnight.

Good Evening. I don't do personal abuse but if you consider my "fruitcake" comment as such, I will unreservedly withdraw it and apologise for it.

However I will stick with my posts on this subject and am happy for others to judge them on their merits against your own. My posts of 00.03 and 00.14 refer.
