I'd have thought almost impossible all drown at the same time, hotel complex quick to clam nothing wrong with the pump and put out stories  of family not being able to swim, I'd hazard a guess there was definitely was something wrong that caused a lot of sudden suction, pool so small no lifeguard even needed. Seems to me the club la costa trying to cover themselves from fines/being sued/bad rep etc

I've been there many times, saddo, my wife has family there. Some go spear fishing but you have to both be a good swimmer and know the currents which can be dangerous in order to do that. Swimming inshore among the rollers is marvellous as the water is warm.
Report Dr Crippen December 28, 2019 8:01 PM GMT
Some white folks don't float very well either.

It's just that people of that background are more likely to have negative buoyancy. It doesn't apply to all of them.

Some overcome it anyway. It just makes it harder to learn to swim.
But they'll never be a champion.

It does increase the likelihood that they couldn't swim or were poor swimmers because of their ethnic background.  This is a gambling forum.  We bet on percentages, and the mug gamblers who don't are protected by the efficiency of those that do.

I think regardless of said deduction, it is not nearly sufficient on the balance of probablities, to change my opinion that it is still more likely there was a problem with the pool, than three separate drownings in a pool with no problems
Report Dr Crippen December 28, 2019 8:13 PM GMT
It's much easier swimming in the sea.

The salt in the water adds to buoyancy.

If there was a suction problem in the pool, would it drag three down at the same time?

It would take a powerful pump to do that.
Report detraveller December 28, 2019 8:24 PM GMT
but if they are black they cant swim and if they cant swim they can easily drown without any pump.
Report Dr Crippen December 28, 2019 8:30 PM GMT

Report darren_discombobulates_sports December 28, 2019 8:37 PM GMT
Jack The pool is 6 and a half feet deep at it's deepest point according to the Mail. Which is roughly what my guess was, the Pastor looks very tall from the long shots I have seen, over 6ft, amazing to think 3 at one time can drown in a pool without some kind of external interference, really don't think whether one could swim or not is prevalent in this case, maybe if it was out at sea, but even non swimmers could easily enough splash/clamber there way to the sides, the dad could probably walk let alone swim, though with a pool fairly small I'd imagine the diameter of the pump system is not wide enough to generate powerful suction force, maybe 1 of them, a smaller child, but all 3?
Report Jack Hacksaw December 28, 2019 8:44 PM GMT
Thanks, Daz.  Seems very strange.  Wonder if in the underwater struggle, panic took hold and they all grabbed each other so that no one could move?
Report detraveller December 28, 2019 8:45 PM GMT
I have experienced the 'slipping to the deeper side' back when i couldnt swim as a kid. Not a nice feeling when you lose the floor under your feet. Your first reaction is not to try and  float but to move back horizontally to feel the floor again.

Report CLYDEBANK29 December 28, 2019 8:51 PM GMT
My first reaction when I heard the initial reports was that either there was an issue with the pool, or it was a murder suicide from a mentally depressed parent.  It never entered my head that it could be three separate drownings.  Reports seem to have ruled out the murder/suicide theory
Report Foinavon December 28, 2019 9:10 PM GMT
Det, the deeper you go the less friction you have with the sloping floor since more of your weight is supported by the water. It therefore becomes more difficult to "walk" back towards the shallow end as your feet lose their grip. I can imagine how frightening that can be for a non-swimmer. Best try and move sideways towards the edge of the pool where you can grab the side.
Report detraveller December 28, 2019 9:30 PM GMT
Yes Foinovan, you swim sideways and never back. But the first instinct is always to get back the thing you just lost, which is your footing. Hence trying to swim back, not being able to regain your footing which isn't possible without 'swimming' back a couple of feet or so and then panicking.
Report detraveller December 28, 2019 9:35 PM GMT
However, I thought swimming sideways only applied when swimming in a stream. If its a small pool with stationary water, I don't think the water behind you, which basically pulls you down when you swim back to where you came from, will make much of a difference.
Report Foinavon December 28, 2019 9:42 PM GMT
In the pool you are trying to walk uphill which requires more friction than moving sideways. As your feet lose their grip you tip over causing more panic.
Report detraveller December 28, 2019 9:58 PM GMT
What I am trying to say is that if you can't swim, whether you try to go sideways or backwards, it hardly makes a difference in a pool. You've lost your footing and you can't swim, whichever direction you go.

When bating on the beach, that's where the swim sideways thing helps because if you try to go backwards, it only helps the water pull you further towards the sea because of the way the water moves there.

Your point is obviously valid, but for a non-swimmer invalid. He can't swim. End of story.

Just getting my coat silver Confused

Mid August 2019.

A BRITISH father whose little girl is in hospital on the Costa del Sol after being ‘sucked’ into a pool pump has called it an ‘accident waiting to happen.’

Doctors fear Zara Clarkson, six, from Manchester, may have blood poisoning after her tiny arm was trapped in the pool’s filter pump for more than three hours.

Her father, Zack, 46, battled to keep his daughter’s head above water as firefighters raced to the scene with jackhammers and smashed apart the poolside to free the youngster.

The dad and daughter were enjoying their first family holiday at the luxury villa in Estepona with Zara’s twin sister Lucy and their mum Claire, 42, having only brought the property in the Villas de Santa Maria urbanization at Christmas.

Zara underwent treatment at the Hospital Costa del Sol in Marbella where doctors conducted blood tests to ensure there was no damage to her kidneys.

“Zara was panicking and screamed out ‘daddy the pool is sucking me and it won’t stop’,” Zack, the director of a construction company in Manchester told the Olive Press.

He added: “Something with that kind of suction would have easily pulled a smaller child under the water and they would have been killed.

“It’s incredible her little arm has swollen up so much it is now three times the size.

“What has the doctors most concerned is that the force of the suction may have forced toxins to be released into Zara’s bloodstream.

“The main worry is her kidneys could be damaged.”

Zack said his instinct had been to drag his daughter’s arm out but he stopped knowing this risked causing even greater damage.

Instead, he stayed ‘cheek to cheek’ with Zara keeping her calm as emergency services attempted to saw open the pool’s drainage system.

“She is a brave little kid but of course,” he said, “but it has had an effect on her, she is really upset and has told us she never wants to go swimming again.

“I am a tough lad but my first thought was to go to the corner of the pool and have a quiet sob,” said the distraught father-of-two.

Zara’s mum Claire added: “It was unbearable, I felt helpless and just wanted her out.”

It has been claimed the pool pump had been left on despite reports in the Diario Sur that the pump switch was turned off at the time of the incident.

“It’s so shocking, ” said Tony Reddin, 59, an expat of 30 years and member of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers.

“Imagine you’ve got long hair, you’d be sucked in and that’s it, you’re dead,” he told the Olive Press.

“She is lucky to be alive.”

So the question I would like to ask is  how big was the pump being used by the swimming pool ?  Was it situated at the deep end of the pool and could have sucked one of the family in and the others died trying to save him / her ?

A question based on historical evidence of a child previously being sucked in by a pump at a similar type of pool !!!!
Report darren_discombobulates_sports December 30, 2019 8:53 PM GMT
Case closed by Spanish police.

The man and 16 year old were both 6ft tall, just 10 cm shorter than the deepest point of the pool, according to the BBC, yet both drowned along with the daughter, only 3 possible explanations, 1) daughter was drowning after being sucked to the bottom by the pump and/or had her costume trapped on something, the other 2 tried to save her and wouldn't come up til they could but both drowned as well, 2) the dad or boy was trying to drown the girl, and the other one tried to stop him (no idea why of course) and they all drowned, 3) they were all the victim of sudden suction at the bottom of the pool. Whichever way the dismissive way the Spanish police have dealt with it, not even draining the pool to conclude a proper check, makes it feel like a cover up, with that or a lazy cowboy operation who didn't like their Christmas being interrupted, chances of all 3 accidentally drowning at the same time in the same small pool are incredibly minuscule to non existent.
