Bought my grandson an MP3 player for Christmas...

My son is asking if it supports wi-fi, so he doesn't have to pay, ongoing, for downloads!

I wouldn't know how to use one, but bought my daughter one or two quite a few years back. once she got a smart phone she said they were redundant.

I've stubbornly refused to move from MP3 player to streaming.

Tell me I'm wrong.  Can anyone explain (in plain English) WTF I'm missing out on ?  Laugh

That may well be the case saddo, as James said that a few weeks ago!

He said that he thought his mother was going to buy him a phone, but "Nettle Face" is a serial b**ch,
so he couldn't verify it!

James has a "Spotify" account, so had wondered if he could use that!

I see some sites offer "free and legal" downloads, but there has to be a catch there.

I can only think that the reason MP3 players are so cheap, is that, as you say, they aren't as much in demand!

mp3 sound quailty is poor the analouge sound wave is clipped at both the top (treable) and the bottom (base) to save disk space

So what's this about "Lossless Sound" which is supposed to be exactly like the original recording?

I still buy cd's or use a youtube to mp3 converter, then add to my itunes collection, then onto my phone and ipod that I keep at work, or of course play songs direct from the internet. I either play my ipod/iphone through headphones, my business/home sound system or one of these:

https://www.ultimateears.com/en-us/wireless-speakers/roll-2.html

The sound is fantastic on all 3 but what the UE roll produces for the money, size and portability is unreal. I should get another one and go stereo really.

mp3 is poor reproduction whereas hi res streaming is meant to be the business if you have the right gear . I prefer cds and , recently , have taken again to good old vinyl .

When I listen to an internet radio station, "80's hairband" through my ipod/iphone songs sound so much better, more dynamic, than cds or songs downloaded and played through my iphone/ipod. Why is that?

The details on the amazon page say that it comes with a usb cable, which suggests that it has a usb port. In the questions, a micro usb port is mentioned, as is copying files to a pc/laptop. You could get micro usb to usb cable, or a micro usb adaptor and try to connect it to a pc or laptop. Another alternative is to try and remove the sd card & put it in a tablet. You may then be able to copy files to & from the sd card in the laptop & then put it back into the mp3 player. Bluetooth may be another option, if you can pair it with another device.

mp3 is quite an old format for storing data. basically sound is analouge think of a wave at the top of the wave is the treable and at the bottom of the wave the base in order back then to save disk space they would chop the bottom and the top off the wave to save space. tech as moved on since then with up scalers and othe digital simulators but the bottom line is sound is a natural analouge wave and you can't beat natural. digital chops bits of the analouge wave then replicates it to form an atificial analouge sound wave. if you have high end gear like a linn system you might get away with the sound qualitiy

I read about mp3 a long time ago & what I read suggested that the majority of what is being removed is inaudible to the ear. (You can't hear it).

Guys, I really do thank you for both positive, and negative (true statement as it is) so it looks like I will be buying the little guy something else, and if "Nettle Face" does get him a suitable phone, it would be superfluous in any case!

A great shame as I,a young person in an old git's body, wasn't to know, and just feel disappointed!

Still, I will take it back, as it will probably be better than my existing "Crystal Set" and ex W.D. headphones!

James has said that he doesn't need one....

Imagine someone like "Schummi" coming out of a coma, to be told that someone has spotify on his kindle!!!

He also has an echo dot in his room,so he's sorted on the music front!

If anyone wants to by a brand new "Supereye" 16GB MP3 player I have one here, brand spanking new, and will sell it
to a CC contributor for any reasonable offer!

It's a beautiful piece of kit, but no use to me, as I am 95% deaf in one ear, and 85% deaf in the other!

My kids had one of those and, needless to say, thought it was brilliant!

Thinking back to when I was a nipper, I thought that "Kaleidoscopes" (haven't checked the spelling) were brilliant!

The ones I really liked were the one that I don't recall the name..."Space Invaders" perhaps!
It was red with a round screen, and was like a mine version of a table for two players, which we had at the squash club!

The best ones were a viewfinder, which was pointed to the front, like a spacecraft, and the enemy (whatever they were) were coming at you on both sides. We had two of them!

Don't know what the hell happened to all this stuff,
but not withstanding the value, I just wish I had them!
