James Goldsmith went to Eton.
He received his formal education at Millfield, and Eton College, which he left early in 1949 at the age of 16, after winning a horse racing bet of £10 on a three-horsed accumulator, winning £8,000 (equivalent to about £262,000 in March 2017).[7] With his winnings he decided that he should leave Eton immediately; in a speech at his boarding house he declared that, "a man of my means should not remain a schoolboy! |

Indeed. Along with his success as a gambler and investor and his opposition to the EU, he surely should be inducted into the Chit Chat Hall of Fame.

My dad and brother and me used to sit there .we wouldn't go out in the cold and bring in a bucket full of coal .the fire would go out if it wasn't for my mam
By:
We used to sit there in the cold many a night if she was in late from work and shopping
So she could clear all the old ashes out and make a new fire We only shouted at her when we was really cold .as we wore our over coats till she got home to make the fire |
By:
Now and then we would poke the fire with the poker but my dad and myself stopped doing it when my brother would not do his turn
By:
My mam didn't bring the heavy bucket of coal in from outside because she loved us.she brought it in so the fire wouldn't go out and she would have to start all over again lighting it

She never read me any bed time fairy tales she said she was too tired
I said to her your never too tired to make our breakfast .or clean the house or wash our clothes or darn our socks or do the shopping or go to work I said your all for yourself and my brother agreed with me. |
By:
My mother cursed the day the Daily Mail went from broadsheet to tabloid.
"Bloody hopeless for getting the fire going in the mornings," she used to grumble. Regarding the opening post, I went to Slough Grammar School. Does that count? Oddly enough, one of my best friends in later life actually was at Eton at the same time as I was at Slough Grammar, but our paths never crossed until we both ended up going racing every day as adults. He does post on here very occasionally. |

My only experience of Eton is going there as captain of our 2nd X1 cricket side and us getting bowled all out for 37, extras was our highest scorer! It was most embarrassing to put it mildly.

Sending your children to an excellent school like Eton is something most of us can only dream about. I’ve got four kids so couldn’t possibly afford it, but would in a shot if I could. A private education of that standard would be a wonderful thing to give them.
By:
All my kids will go to university, however. Given my background, that will be a very proud day for me.

When I was on the metrolink comeing back home from Manchester a few weeks ago .I heard a female talking to someone on her phone who I presumed was her partner.
I thought she speaks beautifully. Her partner asked her about something which she replied it's confeedential I can't talk about it.He then continued to try and get information from her but she stood firm and said you know it's confeedential and I can't discuss it . That made me more impressed with her She got off at media city where the BBC and ITV are situated .I followed her and said excuse me .have you had private education ,to which she replied yes I said I can tell it was well worth it,your a credit to your parents .you speak beautifully .she smiled and we parted |
By:
I was worried to approach her .but I could tell she was not one for them females who would shout Fu c* off its non of your business and I was right
By:
I like to give credit to people who deserve it .and she deserved it
I hope I didn't frighten her too much |
