Mex.. If they are going to run with these smart motorways which it looks as they will regardless of the protests then they have to ensure that they install as many emergency refuge areas (ERA) as they can to ensure drivers can get the **** out of the traffic. Do you get that ? Or are you so ******* thick that it goes way out of your level of comprehension ???
Will i be using them ? Not if i can help it unless they at the same time implement the above or we are going to be faced with a disaster just waiting to happen, HOWEVER, I COULD BE WRONG !!!!! |

Very hard to avoid using them if they are on a route that you use regularly. Being retired, time is not such a priority but for instance, I have 2 sons with families. One in Whitchurch near Cardiff which is a very long journey from Wedmore, Somerset without using either the M5 or M4. My other son is in Royston so we would take the A303, M4, M25 and A1M for the shortest route. I have back problems which makes 90 minutes the longest time I can safely drive without a break so motorway services are the best solution. The nearest train for Cardiff would involve driving to Weston S. Mare, leaving a car there and changing in Bristol and again on to a local Cardiff train. Getting to Royston involves driving to Castle Cary, train to London, tube across London and a train to Royston. To get to my son's house in Bassingbourn would mean a taxi. If you live in a town centre and never visit rural areas, public transport is the answer but that is no use to me. I think that they will have to stop any new smart motorways and quickly improve safety on existing ones.

I think that’s the only realistic solution sageform although I would like to see them completely do away with those already built.

Well gentlemen as its got 5G connections, they will continue weather we like it or not

Ok here is your bomber of 1945. Uncanny that they found wreckage of the bomber here there and everywhere isnt it ?
Upon impact, the plane’s fuel exploded, filling the interior of the building with flames all the way down to the 75th floor and sending flames out of the hole the plane had ripped open in the building’s side. One engine from the plane went straight through the building and landed in a penthouse apartment across the street. Other plane parts ended up embedded in and on top of nearby buildings. The other engine snapped an elevator cable while at least one woman was riding in the elevator car. The emergency auto brake saved the woman from crashing to the bottom, but the engine fell down the shaft and landed on top of it. Quick-thinking rescuers pulled the woman from the elevator, saving her life. Say no more--the plane disappeared into the steel framed tower, perhaps not 100% of it but who expect 100% to do so. So how remarkable was this : The Empire State Building reopened for business just two days later Totally irrelevant, you claim it's remarkable but fail to explain to explain why. and even more remarkably, it took just three months to repair all the damage. Again no explanation why it's so remarkable. Instead of ranting about what it couldn't of been please tell us what crashed into the twin towers. |

John's modus operandi is to deny whatever the official version is and call you an idiot if you buy the official version. He doesn't have his own opinions, except when it comes to high level physics. Don't waste your time.

If you guys are happy to believe in fairy tales until they stick you in the middle lane of the smart motorway and have an engine failure then i wish you well.
Some see through it all, many dont. That is just as it is. I used to believe the fairy tales but years of rationally sifting through the available evidence took me to a different place. Just keeping sucking up the lies until they eventually choke you much like a new virus will. JML. take the time to look at the evidence available and if you are happy to accept the nonsense then thats fine by me. You can have your opinion and i will have mine. ![]() Detroller... Time for a piccy i feel as you dont want to neglect your usefulness. ![]() Enjoy your daze ![]() |

detraveller---have you noticed how he's gone from a handful of posts a month to now posting
dozens every week. The forum now have two that devote a major part of their lives to conspiracies. |

They just promote someone's videos I think.

It beggars belief that they even considered building high speed motorways without a hard shoulders.
Why do they think they built them with hard shoulders in the first place? Looking around the road system, they seem prepared to go to any lengths to secure a little bit more safety. While here they've thrown safety to the dogs. |
|
By:
How strange its the usual pond life who support these death traps when decent people here see these "smart" motorways for what they are, its the same names that crop up every single time.
|

You're imagining things again mccann--there isn't a single thread on here in favour of smart motorways.
Are you ever going to get something right. |

So the smart motorways rely on internet connection do they? Another reason not to trust them.
|

it's only in use during congested periods ...so stick a 30mph speed limit on it ...problem solved

there is this myth that the lady that fell 75 stories in that lift only survived because she jumped up at the last minute ![]() |

and so clever to call them 'smart' motorways so the name makes them safe and to appear(much more importantly) as safe. They are safe because we have called them 'smart' so they must be much safer than an ordinary motorway(which has the whole length covered by a safe pull off lane. They are SAFE they are SMART oh ho ho ho
As I have said before I was involved in one of these cars parked in the lane with no where to go - fortunately we were at 50 ish and there was space to avoid, luckily, just before the m25 turn off which is usually chocker (3 lanes full as we split off for gatwick or heathrow. The idea was plain stupid - who are these 'smart' planners? There was nothing smart about it with the car/driver and others at great risk. |

John. Thanks for finally actually giving us an idea of what you would like to happen...
Spend money building more refuse points - currently about one every 1.5 miles . So should bring down to one every half a mile?? Does anyone actually object to the "smart" bit of these "smart Motoway ". The AA report is about the lack of hard shoulder. So is the ability to close lanes, reduce/ increase speed limits, monitor congestion etc. a good development. Can't be long before these Motoways become safer by stopping humans driving. After all it is human drivers who crashed into a stationary vehicle which caused these 34 deaths. Or do we blame those deaths on the New World Order of Lizzards? |

Haven't read back so apologies if this has been covered.....
https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/38-people-killed-on-smart-motorways-in-last-five-years-bbc-panorama-reveals/?utm_source=email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=CHUB_INSUR_A_W1_2020-01-31_131535_11471537&cid=eml-email-CHUB_INSUR_A_W1_2020-01-31_131535_11471537-Drive_NL_INSU_1st_Feature Frightening statistics, criminal even, especially if confronted with the true statistics! Urgent action is required to rectify this situation by, at least, coning off the ex hard shoulder until a safer plan is put in place! As a reasonable compromise, my own early thoughts are to make this lane a max speed limit of, say 30mph, but to allow "undertaking" if the second lane is moving at less than that speed! |
|
By:
Full works on M23 today, now you would have thought in a sane world where human lives mattered, work on Smart Motorways should be halted to try and sort safety out but not a bit of it-Boris and this sh1t government total bastards, but then they all are.
|
|
By:
The first time I heard that they were about to remove the hard shoulder, a massive - WHAT? went off in my head.
From that point no evidence they could ever produce would change the fact for me that they were throwing safety to the dogs. I think my attitude would apply to at least 90% of people. Even with safety places set at 600 metres apart, still no way! |
|
By:
Yes why accept 600 metres as its still far from safe?
|
|
By:
How do people get into positions where they can put others lives at risk?
Whose idea was it in the first place? There must have more than one, and the minister who approved it. Sack the lot! |
|
By:
Highway England have already factored in the extra deaths that will occur on these so called Smart motorways, now if they know that so does the bloody government.
|
|
By:
Terry - been like it for about a year on the M23.
The removal of the hard shoulder is suicide. |
|
By:
undertaking is a practice which last time I heard was illegal but has become commonplace. It is one thing if there are 3 lanes of slow moving cars and you find the inside lane going slightly faster but I have been going 70 mph in the middle lane on a quiet stretch of motorway because I could see a truck ahead of me and a car passed me on the inside doing 90 and they just managed to get past the truck. Insane.
|
|
By:
Its beyond crazy Injera, mile after mile of it and they have the nerve to call it an "upgrade"
|
|
By:
But to be fair, Highways England produced reports about how much better they were and no minister is going to countermand his "experts" without evidence. They have to close them now though as the evidence is clear.
|
|
By:
Agreed. Can’t get my head around what they’re doing in the middle. Excavation etc.
|
|
By:
They are laying the dark fibre for 5G in the middle, and there lies the problem, nothing is going to stop 5G, a shame the BBC didn't mention it last Monday but they wouldn't would they.
|
|
By:
I hope the victims' families are successful, and get compensation (if there's such a thing). The use of the hard shoulder on the motorway as a running-lane is sheer bonkers and ill-advised and ill-conceived putting the safety of users before traffic congestion/jam. It's merely to save money at he expense of the lives of motorists and their passengers.
The majority of the drivers in The UK are not competent drivers on ordinary roads, and the motorway is a lottery to some, but a necessity to shorten journey time; the signage on the gantry is few and too late esp before a turn-off/exit. |
|
By:
Its nearly all about 5G AND DRIVERLESS VEHICLES-what could possible go wrong there??
