Home Secretary Priti Patel said: "Stop-and-search works. We hear again and again from police that [they] need to be empowered."

A study of stop-and-search over a decade in London by the College of Policing found it to be "inconsistent" and "weak" as a deterrent.

In 2017-18, black people were 9.5 times more likely to be searched than white people, a gap which has grown in recent years.

Ms Abbott said evidence-based stop-and-search was an important tool, but "random stops have only poisoned police community relations" and were a "tried and tested recipe for unrest".

Who cares about communities it is about saving lives.

Abbott is basically saying she would rather see people killed than saved.

This is a very difficult issue. But I think it is needed.

Police will search where they think they may find knives, there is not a lot of point in them looking where they will not

Certain communities have to accept this, if that is where the crime is most predominate, it saves lives in their communities as well.

I regard all human beings as equal regardless of any differences in race, creed or colour.

Abbot is silly in this, police are trying to prevent loss of life in her own communities, as well as all others.

Operation Trident started in 1998 to tackle black on black gun crime. It's no longer called OT and has been swallowed up into general policing.

Political Correctness has dictated that profiling is racist. As others have said the PC mob would rather focus on that than black lives being lost.

The black population in Jamaica is of course over 90%. They have one of the highest murder rates in the world. Question for Abbott - would she advocate stop and search in Jamaica?

A rather more nuanced position than the Abbot-bashers on this fred would have you believe.

'Community relations' is a laughable phrase. We have areas of our country given over to gangs of criminals who carry and use knives. There is no community, it's a jungle where the most violent get the spoils, they should be eradicated.

Police harassment of innocent people quickly builds resentment behind which the villains can hide; they can even prosper by posing as defenders of the community (the claim that launched a thousand protection rackets).

That's classically been the problem with stop and search. Too many innocent people stopped and searched. Not enough guilty.

Diane Abbott knows that, and so did Theresa May, so it is hardly a left/right point. Just common sense.

That is a point, what worries me is that all young men get into the habit of carrying knives.

Young men fight, if they use knives then it can be fatal.

Still if police stop and search is only going to create more ill feeling...that is a fair point.

ps

Remember watching 'West Side Story' years ago, gangs using knives in 50's New York, great film
Still the Us has solved that they now use guns insteadSad

That's not doing nothing, it's focussing on evidence based stop-and-search.
But that takes thought, planning, intelligence, so bugger that.

Instead, let's take the easy option of random stops, allowing conscious and unconscious bias influence our randomness.

If you stop and search a gang of black kids together, more often than not, they will have something illegal on them ..NAP

You would like to think that there is a detailed plan behind this statement.
A bit of substance beyond the "Tories are tough on crime" pre-election posturing.

Let's hope that there is.

Diane Abbott is quite right.

No one should be stopped and searched if they are doing nothing.

If the police have no evidence against someone they should leave them the fk alone.

A pilot scheme making it easier for police to search people without reasonable suspicion, in places where serious violence may occur, is being extended to all 43 forces across England and Wales.

In March, when he was home secretary, Sajid Javid first introduced the scheme in seven police force areas: London, the West Midlands, Merseyside, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Wales and Greater Manchester.

The latest move will see restrictions over using section 60 stop-and-search lifted more widely, giving officers across England and Wales a limited time period to search anyone in a designated area in order to prevent violent crime.

Inspectors will now be able to use section 60 without seeking the authorisation of a senior officer and there will be a lower threshold for its use, with police only needing to reasonably believe that violence "may" occur, not that it will.

The Home Office and Number 10 said their decision to extend stop-and-search was based on "initial feedback" from the three-month trial in seven areas.
Home Secretary Priti Patel said: "Stop-and-search works. We hear again and again from police that [they] need to be empowered."

She said powers needed to be used in the "right, legal and professional way" but their use was supported by families of victims of knife crime, from "communities that have suffered so much trauma and pain".

Elena Noel, co-chair of Southwark's anti-knife crime forum, said action was needed to halt the "crisis" but "independent data does not show that stop-and-search stops knife crime and violence".

A study of stop-and-search over a decade in London by the College of Policing found it to be "inconsistent" and "weak" as a deterrent.

Labour accused the Conservatives of trying to "appear tough" instead of dealing with the root causes of crime.

Ms Abbott said evidence-based stop-and-search was an important tool, but "random stops have only poisoned police community relations" and were a "tried and tested recipe for unrest".

The Liberal Democrats' home affairs spokesman Ed Davey accused Mr Johnson of repeating the "failed policies of the past" and said extending stop-and-search disproportionately affected black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.

I am all for stop and search

Innocent people should be in favour of stop and search. Today we have recording equipment that can record abuse by bigoted Police Officers.

You have to feel for parents who live in these dodgy areas who worry if their kids will come home safely.

Typical stupid reaction from the Home Secretary though imho. What is she going to do about the drugs gangs. Wasn't she for a time part of a Government that cut 20,000 Police Officers. Wasn't BJ part of the Government for some time?

Drugs policy and Laws are not working.

I do not understand the Labour Party's attitude. Poor people are the ones getting killed. Poor people are the ones who will be robbed and mugged. The Police Force should be there to protect all our people.

I do not understand some Black people's attitude. Who wants knife wielding drug gang members walking around as untouchables?

I believe that fella in Tottenham  got murdered by the Police. I think it was wrong and we do not want our Police Force to go round assassinating people but do I care if Duggan is dead....NO! One less piece of scum not making peoples lives and communities miserable.

If randomly searching people is such a great idea because you will find a few guilty ones why not extend it to other serious crimes ?

If most people with paedo porn are middle aged white blokes then why not randomly search the computers of people with this profile ? For every 100 they check perhaps 2 or 3 will be found to be paedos, and so then it will all be worthwhile ?
