are these the generators that will power our world leading giant battery chargers to keep millions of electric cars on the move within 10 years
boris was supposed to bring the country to iots kmnees on nov 1st but as his many mistresses can confirm ,he always comes early, ![]() |

Had a power cut here in Zummerzet a few years back which Western Power claimed was down to a bird of prey dropping a rabbit on overhead lines.

Interesting, I'd previously assumed that the generators would all generate at whatever frequency they wanted then it would be cleaned up and synchronised somewhere during distribution (although that would probably lead to power loss) but my reading of this is they are all generated to the correct frequency at source:
https://www.drax.com/energy-policy/need-whole-country-frequency/ I'd be surprised that was even possible back in the day like the 20s-30s? Maybe they did it the mucky way then. |

" Western Power claimed was down to a bird of prey dropping a rabbit on overhead lines."
How do they know it was a bird of prey? How do they know it wasn't practicing a cross channel flight attempt? |

It phoned in to report it.

Stupid post to connect this to boris, ffs are you really that triggered ?
Generators have the same protection and have to output at 50hz, if they dont they switch off. Generators have to sync into the grid, ie frequency/volts. Generators are mainly used for the demand of less than 2mva (a small village) and for back up to keep lv supplies on. For a frequency to fall like it did today is either a power station going down or 400kv power line going down. Or some sort of supply going off. |

Must have been some very worried People stuck on the Tube
They would not have been thinking Power Cut ..Lord knows what the Temp must have reached ![]() |

My brother was there yesterday standing 6 people deep to get on the tube wouldn't be me.

Wrong People beside you on Carriage can add to the Atmosphere

Amazing to think the original tube trains were steam and pumped smoke out into the tunnel (and your carriage).
That would really help the atmosphere on a sweltering day! Thank god this was pre global warming and the hottest it got in summer was a balmy 13C. |

It just came back to me people with small scale generation schemes (small scale hydro, solar etc) can sell energy back into the grid if they aren't using it. Also I've read reports that they might use cars sitting on charge as temporary grid supply sources, like a distributed battery network, when demand is high. Fair enough. But that'll be DC or unsynced AC. So there must already have standard power efficient ways of resyncing back to the standard 50hz in an acceptable manner. (Just thinking out loud about my query earlier I suppose .. I've read too much brassneck tonight and I'm becoming like him :)) My theory "all generation doesn't have to be synced at source" stands :)

Fine here in Chester, the lack of Cannabis farms in the area helps imo.

"Turbans produce no electrical output"
You must be Sikh with a comment like that! Re the dropping of this rabbit by an Eagle...was this witnessed? It must have been a hell of a big rabbit, to bring down a power line, as the only way to knock out the power, is for either the line to be down, or otherwise for a connection between two lines! |

Delays, cancellations and widespread disruption at London railway terminals but it was two hours before anyone noticed the difference.

2 generators in 2 different locations going down independently with neither effecting the performance or lack of it of the other, good luck in holding that line
|
|
By:
The only answer i can think of is that the first power station went down causing a dip in the frequency (50hz) and the 2nd power station (wind farm) had incorrect protection settings and saw the dip in frequency as a local fault rather than a grid fault and tripped (turned off).

To be fair to Western Power, they were actually referring to an ongoing series of power cuts in Somerset, which they claimed were due to birds of prey persistently dropping rabbits on overhead power lines (plural). Not necessarily high voltage cables either - this is rural Somerset we're talking about, where nearly all the cables, even to individual houses, are overground.
Also, this was thirty-plus years ago. Maybe rabbits have shrunk since then. Owing to global warming, obviously. |

Just saw Yesterday at the cinema yesterday as it happens. Bloody good film with a real Danny Boyle feel good factor! |

The trouble is who do we believe and how do we believe them.
I am not saying it is Russia or China testing us but nobody wants to take responsibility. I think it is a really serious situation that we need to know about and further the Authorities need to be able to take action. I pity the poor people stranded at Kings cross at 5pm on a Friday! |
