I've been thinking for years now just how devastating it would be if people lost main powers and everyone had electric vehicles.

Still, at least with no electricity the underpowered ZX81 running the forum bot that is on a good day only capable of "Spiv Culture fails again" would have its B/W portable screen blanked...

For example a nuclear attack wouldn't even need to hit the ground, just a few high EM airbursts to take out all the electrics.
I'd imagine old skool cars trucks or vans could have been hardened and were relatively easily repaired, and petrol is easy to stockpile or move tankers about as needed.
If everything was electric and something catastrophic happened .. game over, welcome to the middle ages.

Well a turbine (in this case) is a generator with a turbine design.

I find it hard to believe they would be designed such that a generator fail would take down a network that has MANY generators as input?
You'd think you'd have say a drop in voltage, doesn't sound right. A failure in the transmission network is what you'd expect to cause an outage.

In ww2 we used to drop lengths of wire on germany, and release balloons with trailing wires to get blown across the country, hoping to short out their power cables.
Apparently worked quite well! We need some of that ingenious wires trailing from balloons spirit again. *plays patriotic music*.

From what i read their was a frequency problem, ie something went really wrong with the power supply (a real dip in power output) and then the hertz protection kicked in around the country as a knock on affect. Power stations run on 50hz and if it goes outside that for a short period then the protection acts as something local is amiss even thou it could be on the whole grid.

That is why the generator excuse is a pile of crap.

Maybe the hamster just needed a rest, stopped going round and round on his wheel for a wee bit.

AFAIK the frequency is highly specced to run at bang on 50hz but the voltage is allowed to fluctuate a fair bit.

There was this post that i read where the frequency dipped down to 30 something at around 1630, the cause must had been catastrophic and not a generator.

Had a power cut here in Zummerzet a few years back which Western Power claimed was down to a bird of prey dropping a rabbit on overhead lines.

Interesting, I'd previously assumed that the generators would all generate at whatever frequency they wanted then it would be cleaned up and synchronised somewhere during distribution (although that would probably lead to power loss) but my reading of this is they are all generated to the correct frequency at source:

Generators have the same protection and have to output at 50hz, if they dont they switch off.

Generators have to sync into the grid, ie frequency/volts. Generators are mainly used for the demand of less than 2mva (a small village) and for back up to keep lv supplies on.

For a frequency to fall like it did today is either a power station going down or 400kv power line going down. Or some sort of supply going off.

Must have been some very worried People stuck on the Tube They would not have been thinking Power Cut ..

It just came back to me people with small scale generation schemes (small scale hydro, solar etc) can sell energy back into the grid if they aren't using it. Also I've read reports that they might use cars sitting on charge as temporary grid supply sources, like a distributed battery network, when demand is high. Fair enough. But that'll be DC or unsynced AC. So there must already have standard power efficient ways of resyncing back to the standard 50hz in an acceptable manner. (Just thinking out loud about my query earlier I suppose .. I've read too much brassneck tonight and I'm becoming like him :)) My theory "all generation doesn't have to be synced at source" stands :)

Re the dropping of this rabbit by an Eagle...was this witnessed?

It must have been a hell of a big rabbit, to bring down a power line, as the only way to knock out the power,
is for either the line to be down, or otherwise for a connection between two lines!

Delays, cancellations and widespread disruption at London railway terminals but it was two hours before anyone noticed the difference.

2 generators in 2 different locations going down independently with neither effecting the performance or lack of it of the other,good luck in holding that line

The only answer i can think of is that the first power station went down causing a dip in the frequency (50hz) and the 2nd power station (wind farm) had incorrect protection settings and saw the dip in frequency as a local fault rather than a grid fault and tripped (turned off).

I see the bosses are now saying

To be fair to Western Power, they were actually referring to an ongoing series of power cuts in Somerset, which they claimed were due to birds of prey persistently dropping rabbits on overhead power lines (plural). Not necessarily high voltage cables either - this is rural Somerset we're talking about, where nearly all the cables, even to individual houses, are overground.

Also, this was thirty-plus years ago. Maybe rabbits have shrunk since then. Owing to global warming, obviously.

The trouble is who do we believe and how do we believe them.
