England have named an unchanged squad for the third Ashes Test against Australia at Headingley on Thursday.
James Anderson is making progress with his calf injury and will play for Lancashire second XI in a three-day match beginning on Tuesday. England say the 37-year-old will be assessed "on an ongoing basis". |

who's on England today?

I am a big backer for Aussies to win the ashes, England at 1.8 is just plain silly when Roy wont score and Root will be out early unless he starts to move his feet.
Teams that move players up and down a line up instead of dropping them are just guessing. |

They were even shorter last night. A bonkers price. Not had a bet yet, might just let my series bet roll; but as we know temptation is a bastard

Obviously a much closer match at Headingley this time, with Smith out and the weather set fair (ish) once today is behind us.
It comes down to which side has more grit in their batting line up - there's any number of 'walking wickets' on display for both teams, so it's a question of which 11 can, colllectively, put some kind of decent scores up in the frst innnings and / or show some resolution in the second. England have a better swing / seam attack (usually the deciding factor in taking 20 wickets at Headingley), Australia the better pace and spinner. At 30/2 in their first innings, as I write, it looks marginally England Win for me, but equally you can see England being 30/4 at a similar stage in their innings. |

Going to be a bit like The Open, whichever side gets the best of the batting conditions will win the match.

5 for Archer, well played that man. 174/8.

Australia slip from 136-2 to 179 all out..
Archer takes 6-45 in his second Test... Rain & bad light limit play to 52 overs.... |

By:
great day for England that - an average day with the bat in decent weather should see them get at least 100 ahead

Can't argue with that and seemingly that's England. However, this batting line-up is poor, if (at face value) long. Roy has neither the technique nor temperament for test cricket and definitely not as an opener. Root is going through a lean spell, Denley, like so many recent England middle-order batsmen, makes pretty 20's and 30's and Buttler is Roy MkII. Burns, Bairstow and Stokes have all shown grit, technique and and understanding of what Test cricket is all about so let's hope one of them can put on a big hundred today. I can't remember the last time England batted for four or five sessions though and that's what's needed here. |

Undoubtedly, there is a worrying fragility around the England batting which will encourage Australia, equipped, as they are, with a very handy bowling line up.
David Warner played and missed on numerous occasions yesterday, going on to take advantage of his good fortune to make a more than handy 61 before getting out caught behind to a beauty from Archer. Can one or more of England's out of form batsmen take inspiration from Warner and go on to turn around their low Ashes batting totals to produce a significant contribution. You'd also like to think that Root and Bairstow will benefit from playing at Yorkshire HQ. We'll likely get the familiar roller coaster experience that has become the hallmark of recent England test match performances. So long as it delivers a win, squaring the series at 1-1 in the process, I suspect that we'll manage to live with it for now, keeping the series alive as we rapidly approach September. |

Here we go!
In the face of another England collapse, you're struck with the pardox that only as a Test batsman in the first hour of an innings on a perfect batting day, can you be a Leaver and therefore a Remainer |

The home side were skittled for their lowest Ashes total since 1948 before the tourists moved to 171-6 to lead by 283 at the end of a day when 16 wickets fell.
