Eng 133-7....
Those boos have turned into chants of "he's got sandpaper in his hands", followed by "we saw you cry on the telly". About 10,000 in the crowd today....We love to sing |

Lots of blame going round on social media
It's not Steve Smith It's not Nathan Lyons spin It's not Jimmy Anderson injured Surely it is: 122-8 210-9 284-10 |

Man of the match - Steve Smith
Australia won at Edgbaston for the first time in 18 years.. |
|
By:
Not aftertiming - see my contribution to this thread - but Smith is the difference between these sides.
Throw in Anderson's injury and Moeen suffering terribly with bat and ball and the margin of defeat was greater than anticipated but defeat it was always going to be. Rain in September may prevent a whitewash and there will be a few bleeps and whistles along the way (Burns and Stokes both have the temperament for Test cricket as does Sam Curran and Archer may make a difference as would a half-decent left-arm spinner) but if Smith stays fit, then England will lose |

England bowler James Anderson will miss next week's second Ashes Test at Lord's due to the calf injury that curtailed his involvement in the series opener.
A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board said Anderson had undergone a MRI scan after "tightness to his right calf". "As a result of the injury, he will commence a rehabilitation programme working with the England and Lancashire medical teams," added the ECB. |

Draw written all over this isn't it?
I mean surely we can't collapse twice in what looks like being about 2 1/2 to 3 days play? |
|
By:
It looks that way but the draw odds have gone from 1.86 to 1.99 since 1030.
Why is Stuart Broad not playing ? |
|
By:
He is.
England squad for second Ashes Test: Joe Root (capt), Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes. They will not name the final eleven until the toss though. |

the outfield looks in good nick considering, although i haven't walked on it. And it's still belting down

The covers are rolling on again and that might well be the last prospect for play today.....

The CricViz Analyst
@cricvizanalyst Jason Roy has edged or missed 29% of the balls he's faced in Test cricket. In the last 12 months, only one Test opener (min 3 matches) has a higher false shot percentage. #Ashes |

Honours about even then at lunch, although you can't help feeling 'one down - five down' about England's batting.
Anyway, with the weather forecast the way it is, it's till looking all over a draw for me. |

Australia have to battle through this morning, then it'll rain for the rest of the day.
See what the pitch looks like tomorrow but if they're still four down and we're into day 4 they just have to bat and build partnerships - forget about trying to win this one. .....and of course they've got the perfect nman at the crease to do just that |
|
By:
....and it looks like the plan is to bowl Archer into a grease spot too
|
|
By:
Australia's morning and looks the best batting conditions of the match.
Smith set for another daddy hundred and if so, they'll go past Englands total sometime after tea tonight. Bat on through to mid-morning tomorrow with a lead of 120-150 and give yourselves 60 or so overs to bowl a jittery England batting order out. I still reckon the draw is the most likely result with the weather still looking gash but..... |
|
By:
Got that all wrong but still fancy the draw or Australia

Steve Smith has been ruled out of the rest of the match due to delayed concussion.
"On that basis, he has been withdrawn from the match. The Australian team will lodge an application for the concussion substitute with the match referee. "In terms of his availability for the next Test, it will be considered over the coming days but the short turnaround is not in his favour. He will be assessed on an ongoing basis and will have a precautionary scan on his neck on Sunday. "Cricket Australia statistics show that 30 per cent of concussions in Australian cricket are delayed. It is not uncommon for players to pass their tests and feel well on the day of an injury and then display symptoms 24 - 48 hours later." Australia will be able to use the new concussion substitute in the rest of this match. The sub will be able to bat in the second innings and bowl in this England innings if they want. |

From the press box....
It's official - Marnus Labuschagne approved by the ICC as Steve Smith's replacement. He's the first like-for-like concussion replacement in Test cricket. |

Just wait for it if he hits the winning runs later …..
