I'm still smarting from the 2015 World Barrista champs coup when Aileen took the Latte, Americano, Cappuccino and Mocha categories.

The thread's been hijacked. Would not surprise me if they were disruptive and non-conducive to innovative changes at work or recreational societies.

Where I'm there's no Aldi, but quite a few Lidl at close proximity too. I love their Ritter Sports chocolate (dark and nutty ones); mixed peppers; high energy bread and chicken thighs - the rest I cannot comment on.

Lidl seem to be frequented by largely foreigners buying excessively (possibly) induced by perceived low prices, I believe.

Foreign people probably like LIDL as they are all over Europe and virtually identical, some local perishable produce like milk and cheese differs, and the "Cheaper!" will be the translated word in their homeland. They know what they will get. I've been in a Tesco abroad and while I'm a fan here I was a bit disappointed.

I was going to go into a Tesco in Saudi but a local stopped me and pointed across the street. "Supermarkets here my friend? There is none good but Asda!".

ALDI is fine  ,the range isn't great  but SOME of the quality on offer in very good .

Just make sure anything fresh is consumed pretty much straight away as the 'fresh ' produce is about the same freshness i see in the reduced bin at Sainsbury's .

Once you shop there a few times you become well versed with the good and not so .

The brand names  in the big stores are pretty awful these days..PG tip[s must be one of the worst about whereas you get a  good packet of Yorkshire in ALDI for not a lot more .

Be wary too if it's a w/known brand youre looking for as some of their their own labels look similar   ...not sure how that's legal  but there u go Plain

Without a doubt the quality of most veg at Lidl eg broccoli, spring onion, lettuce, mushroom, etc, and flowers is inferior compare to the big supermarkets - they do not stay fresh fr long - but their bakery section is ok, I think; adequate nothing fancy, fresh and tasty; nuts are good value too. But, not sure about their coffee, cocoa, biscuits, tin or frozen food. Nevertheless, shoppers would still fill their trolleys with these products, households and personal hygiene stuff.

"Rapeseed oil" has now been put up for renaming  as "Consensual-sex-seed oil" and will face a first reading in Parliament on July 30th 2019 after numerous complaints !

Toxicity in Animals

There have been numerous anecdotal reports of domestic and wild animals, e.g. dogs, roe deer and rabbits, becoming unwell/dying after eating oilseed rape foliage and/or seeds. These anecdotal reports have been supported by a number of studies which have confirmed the oilseed rape crops are extremely toxic to animals both when grown in the field and after crushing into animal feed.

Plain  Fooking ell I have not seen that before , Sorry for Hi jacking the thread , I will leave  it now

Normally these plants would grow not in massive fields in a mono-crop so artificially causing them to do so is bound to produce problems.

Something which never ceases to amuse is the sight of the "shopping snobs" who load their trollies to the limit at Aldi, Asda or Lidl then carefully pack thier purchases into M&S or Waitrose carrier bags.

Happy to shop there but Heaven forbid that the neighbours realise Laugh

I'm about to go to Aldi now to buy A Chicken .

My Father bought a whole chicken there last week for £3 and it was delicious .
While I'm there I'll also buy some other bits N Bob's.

The only Supermarkets I can ever recall shopping in are Adsa, Aldi, Lidl, and Tesco .

In my opinion , which is based not only on value , I place Aldi and Lidl above
Asia and Tesco .

Talking of oil seed rape, I was out in the countryside and kept thinking I smelled cabbage (my dad used to grow it and I know the smell fairly well).
Turns out oil seed rape was the source. Strange that, these fields of tall yellow flowers can smell like a *totally* different plant.

If we didn't have oil seed rape we'd have to have something, it's a lot more enviromentally friendly I'm sure than palm oil or butter, I've no problem with it.

(Apart from it's insidious and deliberately sneaky attempts to smell like a ground lying vegetable).

Well blow me down I'd have never thought that. Oilseed rape is in the brassicae family, the cabbage (and mustard) plant family.
That'll explain the smell I was getting, they look totally different I'd have thought they were light years apart genetically.

Stockwell beans from Tesco - 23p a tin are my current fave. They taste a lot like Branston used to, but aren't the mush that Branston now make

I go to an Aldi store every Sunday but I don't buy much. Cheap pear cider, red spuds, their quiches are great imo, porridge oats, baked beans. That's about it really. I buy everything else from Asda's.

2 days ago I discovered Lidl is on a higher plane than Aldi and will change my shopping habits in light of this new info.  They even have a bakery with proper bread not processed muck.
