Sorry aka - cross posts.

It`s been years since I was in Largs, so I don`t know. Was a great resort back in the day. Happy memories.

We used to go down the Ayrshire coast when younger.
Ayr, Girvan, Largs and Troon. All lovely wee places at that time. Probably still are.
Not sure I'd fancy this though. Laugh

I agree Exmouth is a lovely place.I am glad there is a good fish and chip shop there.Earlier this year we sat down one lunchtime in a central Exmouth fish and chip shop,it was the worst fish and chips we have ever tasted,we left more than we ateI do not know the name of the shop.

The home made jam thatched cottage factory is worth a visit in blackpool.and the home for retired alcoholics has some of the sights that no where in Britain can match.visit any public house and see sights you never even imagined existed .visit the many Indian restraunts where you can taste food that is prepared in the front of your very eyes in the micro oven.
Why not take a ride in an open horse and carriage along the seafront and see the staggering drunks trying to get back to their boarding house for tea.its like a free comedy show
Visit the highly recommended Blackpool tower as those whose had too much to drink attempt to climb it
Even if it's pouring down the fun doesn't stop the fun fair is open to part you from your money so you can tell your friends how much you had to overspend on your holiday .and there's plenty of spaces to park your mobility scooter in the fun house
You can even buy ten sticks of Blackpool rock for a pound from a back street rock shop no one cares that it's spelt wrong through thecmiddle

thinking of booking the harbour salacombe, 2 day special £600 estuary room with balcony and dinner 1st day, but bit of poor reviews re the organisation service at breakfast/ dinner. How did you find it johonny?  . did a tour of devon/ cornwall few years back. 1 st 2 nights , white horse exmoor , deal through secret escapes, fantastic inn.then few days sandy cove nr ilfracombe, £300 a night disgusting filthy dump, then onto lovely b/b in boscastle, nice village and tintangel, stopped in st isaaac  and then 2 days in cheap hotel in newquay, and a night in the jamaican inn on way home.Clovelly  was worth a day trip, so was lynton/ lynmouth, fabulous quaint small cinema there. But this time thinking of sidmouth, st mawes and salacombe and the carbis bay hotel st ives, with a visit to the minack theatre and kynance cove on the agenda.Johonny , what do you think of south sands hotel near the harbour?

Morning mate.

Everything in Salcombe is about the view. Some of the Estuary glimpse rooms are as good, if not better than some of the higher priced rooms. I think I was in room 202 last time which was spectacular. Overall I'd agree with the reviews. You can't fault the rooms or view in any way but as someone on Tripadvisor succinctly pointed out - when it comes do the restaurant the right hand doesn't seem to know what the left hand's doing in terms of service. I'm pretty relaxed about that but I know some people get het up if they have to wait more than 10 seconds to have their wine glasses refilled. Furthermore, I've always thought the menu is quite limited and for me the food is no better than OK, certainly not outstanding. But to add balance to that Mrs Mustang thinks it's superb so it's all about opinions. What I would say is that there are loads of restaurants in Salcombe itself (they're literally on your doorstep as it's a one-road town) and the Victoria Inn in particular does outstanding pub food.

Only stayed at South Sands once and it's very similar in terms of view/dining as the Harbour Hotel but it's quite isolated and there is nothing in South Sands at all to do - it's the hotel and nothing else.

Mrs Gin and I did a day-trip down to Exmouth yesterday.

I thought it was a nice little place and not very busy and it only cost £3 to park right on the seafront for four hours.

It’s still a typical seaside town but as mentioned previously no litter and not too many people. I must say though that it seemed that every second person was obese – what is that all about?

We also went to the aforementioned Krispies fish and chip shop for lunch – it was a bit out of the way but well worth the time – very nice.

I'm not saying it's the best but Brighton is so easy for me to get to and with the racecourse there, Hove dogs, Fontwell, Plumpton and Goodwood all within reach it's pretty much the only seaside place I go to these days for a few days away.

I agree, Slippy Blue, about Brighton.

I lived there for two years and if you were youngish then it is the place to be.  Like you I went to Hove dogs, Brighton racecourse, etc.  I left because I just felt out of place.  I lived in the centre and everywhere I went to have a coffee etc the place was filled with twenty something middle class people.  #

The beach is fantastic for young people with loads going on.

Posted this about Brighton, on the 'Favourite UK seaside resort' thread a couple of years ago:

I lived there 1979-81, 1982-4, 1986-8 and 1989-91. Basically, whenever life went arse over tip back when I was in my twenties, I just ended up returning there. Absolutely loved the place. You could be hopelessly skint and under-achieving, but all you had to do was wander among the streets, pubs and people there and you felt you were something again.

And when you went back there, things happened and opportunities arose. It's that kind of place. And it explains why I kept moving on.

But when I've popped down there since, to see friends or go racing, it feels like a smug, privileged, overcrowded quarter of Kingston-Upon-Thames.

Besides, the days of paying £6/week to live there (summer 1981 - half-share in a £12/week bedsit in Kemp Town) have long gone. I'd be struggling to afford to live there now. But as my mate, with whom I shared that bedsit and who still lives in the town, says: would I actually want to? He'd love to get out of the place, but is stuck with a wife who rejects every alternative, because her friends would classify it as a sign of social failure.

When i go to Brighton, the promenade always has roads closed due to roadworks all over the place, and i've never seen so many homeless people, one in every doorway. well overated imo

Don't stay at Knoll House, it's for pensioners. Instead, go to the Pig on the Beach just around the corner (not that they ever have many rooms available as it's been voted Hotel of the Year).
