Exmouth in East Devon where i live.Beautiful sandy beach not spoilt by tacky amusement arcades and overpriced " fun fairs".Lots of really great pubs(dog friendly) all which have local bands playing all types of music.Beautiful Manor gardens (close to the beach) which has a bandstand on which the town band play on most Sundays for free throughout the summer season and heaps of lovely restaurants and ice cream palours (Antonio's being the best) plus " Krispies"awarded the best fish n chip takeaway in the country.

No litter strewn streets  very little in the way of crime and the people are very friendly and pleasant. We have a sensational golf course (East Devon) just a 10 minute drive away where the views overlooking the town of Budleigh Salterton have to be seen to be believed.

Anyone looking for a stay vacation may i suggest Exmouth should be top of your list.

Exmouth must be about the only town in Devon and Cornwall that I haven't been to.

Defo on the list next time I am down there.

Sounds like a vibrant place to live.

Salcombe is right up there JM ....a beautiful seaside town and  Salcombe ice cream is probably the best i have ever tasted but it is one of the most expensive resorts on the South West coast and therefore most fall in behind Exmouth.

I go there as often as I can Twizzle and in fact was at the Harbour Hotel most of last week. As you say it's expensive but worth it. Someone recommended Fowey to us so we spent a night there before heading back to Salcombe but it is not comparable in any way in my opinion.

There was that cruiser and one called the Yorkshire Belle many years ago.

Have to agree with twizzle re Exmouth, one of our fav places to visit, also very much enjoy Sidmouth.

Salcombe, very pretty but so expensive.

It's only expensive because it's worth it. We stayed in Fowey at what is considered to be the best hotel (it wasn't by the way, it was truly awful) in one of their best rooms at £280 for a night. Salcombe Harbour Hotel's room was £393 per night and was simply in a different league.

I love the train journey to Exmouth.

https://greatscenicrailways.co.uk/lines/avocet-line/

I do like the sign on the platfrom at Lympstone Commando: “Persons alighting here must have business with the camp”. What happens to anyone who alights there without the necessary business?

I took the dog down to Exmouth one Sunday afternoon in February a couple of years ago. It was sunny, but freezing cold, back here in Somerset, with ice on the water butts. Yet down there the beach was absolutely jam-packed with families making sand castles, with dog walkers, and with people just taking a constitutional. It was as though you'd entered some secret domain.

Daniella.
We used to go there regularly Mac.
Restaurant on the side like something out of the forties.
Had soup and a meal but left out the dessert.
Had that in the café. Is it still going with all the page boys/girls waiting to bring your ice cream.
Banana Boat with all the sparklers caught the attention.
