Remember When? (a nostalgia thread)

Raspberry Creamola Foam
Free gifts in comics and cereals.

Eating a knickerbocker glory at the Wimpey.......

Primary school teacher getting the class to write letters to Jim'll Fix It.

handshakes were normal ( not with forearm held up at an angle )

My Latin teacher, Mr. Cottrell, lobbing the board rubber at anyone if they were chewing bubble gum in class. He had terrible eyesight and when he launched the missile we all ducked under our desks as it could have gone anywhere, even if it wasn't meant for me I took preventive tactics just in case. Bless him, I had total respect for Mr.Cottrell even though he was a bit of a nutcase

The Teddy Boys

Remember when you had to buy bin bags? Now local charities post them through your letterbox for free.

Remember when the only genders were males and females?  That's still the case of course, but inexplicably one of the world's biggest tech companies (led by one of the world's richest men) is daft enough to think there are 71 in the UK.

How did this company, clearly not fit to hold any sensible person's data, become so successful in defiance of all common sense?

A Real Man's Man Steven Regal a shocking omission

Remember when employers actively sought to recruit on MERIT, and thus strengthen their business, instead of pursuing discriminatory policies favouring certain 'diverse' groups, regardless of their actual ability?

In their defence, I'd never have been given a job if they didn't have quotas to fill, so I'm grateful for that.

Remember when police officers and had the respect of the public, as opposed to the present ridicule in which they are held?

Some of those Russian women throwers from the 60s were a bit d!ckey.

when the weetabix gang were characters on adverts for...well weetabix and reminded you a bit of madness the band

when putting the tv on meant youd hear it for about 30 seconds before the picture came on, and a white spot could be seen in the centre of the screen after youd turned it off. And your hair used to be attracted to the screen due to the static that built up on it if you got up close

when howards way came on tv it was bath time and the weekend was officially dead and school in the morning

when your best mates dog was called 'blackie' and it was let out in the morning and wouldnt come back till tea time

Dogs called blackie weren't racist back then.

whenever the dreaded suitcase ontop of the parents wardrobe was on the bed you f uckin knew your mother was digging out some ghastly old fashioned hand me down clothes from my older brother's school years and there would be one hell of a battle not to wear any of it

...and the next day Id be wearing polyester flares to school

when CB radios were a thing, and you'd go on the airwaves and invade on people's convos calling everyone a w anker and your mates father would catch you and beat the **** out of you and his son because it was illegal

when you copied games onto a C90 casset for the ZX spectrum and never knew which game you were loading until the picture finished forming after about 5 mins and it wasnt the game you wanted

I dont smoke now but a five pack of Park Drive or Woodbine and a fireman's hose. (the red liquorice sort)

When betting shops smelt like betting shops

when you could buy cigs in 1s

[   This image is no longer available.   ]

when houses actually had real fires in real fireplaces and no guard

I had that mouse and jet set willy

Massive games at the time.

I had horace goes skiing

Bet you had this one

I had a spinning push-down ashtray. Used to sit with my parents waiting for them to flick their ash onto it so I could press the plunger and watch it disappear.

You can keep your modern computer games.

football manager, had that too
I had hundreds of games we all did, we all just copied each others

Actually, parents (plural) is a bit of nostalgia in itself.

look at the size of that goal compared to the players ffs

I remember Kick off on the amiga, somebody calculated how fast the players were actually running to cover a pitch so quickly...turned out to be around 60 mph

Nothing was better than space invaders imo.

And there was a back 4 but no keeper.

nightmare, I was never arsed with that.

If you were, you'd of spelled it Knightmare.

Nothing was better than space invaders imo

Galaxians was always my fav.

My fav from the arcades, also from the sports centre where we used to play it for at least an hour after the swimming:

'someone shot the food remember dont shoot food'

Unless it was the poisoned food.

remember when you went to saturday morning pictures at the local cinema and one of you paid to get in and went down the fire escape and opened the door for the rest of yas to get in free

Having a book of code for computer games that you'd type into a BBC computer.  Impressive patience unlikely to be seen today.

"Dogs called blackie weren't racist back then."

One of my favourite dogs of all time was called "Hello Blackie". He won the Guineas at Hackney in 1990, the same year that Slippy Blue won the Wimbledon Derby.

Here is Hello Blackie doing the business at Hackney that day.

Good god. I remember you'd have them in the old Crash comp mags (which was a good name for computers back then because you invariably loaded a game without the joystick attached, and you tried to just attach one.....and it did something to the things longterm head f uck. Made the things start crashing at a whim).

I did one of those codes, it didnt say what it was specifically in the mag, it was a bit like doing a dot to dot where you saw the pic at the end.

Well funk me, if I didnt learn a number of leassons that day. Firstly, it was supposed to be a stars and stripes banner, but I messed it up and it looked like horseshi t. From that day I realised the quitter in me, 'thats close enough' bodger was born
Secondly, I realised no matter what anyone said, coding is unnatural, like trying to communicate with the dead and best left to really boring people.

The lads what grew up writing code for their speccies now all run their own highly sophisticated bots that are making them a mint for a few minutes work a day.

cant buy a personality though

I use the one I was born with and will continue to do so unless I receive a major bang on the head that alters it completely.

waiting for the paper shop to open on saturday morning to get the shoot magazine ..could"nt wait to read the next episode of billy"s boots...happy days

I believe Shoot was cheaper than Match but Match was better quality.

Flicking through the Radio Times film section in the newsagents, looking for films with 'Warning: contains nudity', then watching found films in the anticipation of a bit of breast.  Also, watching Eurotrash on a Friday night.

Waiting for the MEN pink final outside the paper shop at 6 pm on Saturday before going to the pub.

I was a computer programmer from 1984 on a mainframe computer , so the home computer world of the 80s passed me by.

cigarette machines on the outside of off licenses as they were often shut in the day........they would be pulled off the wall in 10 seconds now.

Packets of Popeye candy cigarettes for kids, dont think you'll see those again

I remember having a black zip up body warmer when I was 5ish

It was covered in sewn on JPS badges, I was like a walking advert for cancer

They are simply called candy sticks now and they don't have the red imitation light bit on the end.

They also relaunched sherbert fountains but stupidly designed the liquorice in a such a way that it doesn't function as a straw.

Now I think about it, you'd find little metal snuff tins scattered all over the place, under hedges or in the gutters

Old men with brown snuff stains down their shirts

Another thing that got erased from history

I remember sitting on the bog reading pieces from the sporting life,(couldn’t afford toilet roll) it was all downhill there after

My best mates father was a big bloke, ex Coldstream guard old school type

Had a big moustasche and always had a pipe hanging out his mouth and a pencil behind the ear

I can still hear the noise of the pipe catching his teeth

Shops that closed for a half day midweek. In my area it was Thursday and in town on Thurs pm you could see the tumbleweeds.

Pubs closing at 2.30pm till 6pm

Don't know they're born today ....

Sundays were worse... 2pm close, 7pm open

....there were telephone directories in public phone booths!

I remember When, terrible song.

....there were telephone directories in public phone booths!

I can remember when public phone boxes still existed

.....kids such as me wore a sheath, with a knife, on our "Snake Belts"....

Collecting marbles

getting chased by school caretakerfor playing football on the school playing fields of an evening

buying single cigs

Gobstoppers that seemed as big as a cricket ball and took two weeks to finish.

Finding the pages in the catalogue book from next door with the pages of women wearing bras and knickers and neglijays

....buses had "conductors" who all thought they were really important..

bottle of milk in school at breaktime

The trains also had conductors instead of a 'train manager'.

....Summers were Summers....hot every day, and the tar on the roads used to melt,
and we would roll into balls and take home (I don't know why)!

....the sirens for two local mills used to sound, one at 05:05 and one at 06:05

Much earlier than that, was the sound of the farmers milking machine, and he would come round later, on his horse and cart,
to fill the jug  that we put out...

...getting spaced out on "Victory 'V' Lozenges! containing Chlorodyne (a soothing mix of cannabis and chloroform) and pure acacia gum...

...getting similarly spaced out on Balsa Cement, Dope (the paint used on the model planes) and Ether in the fuel...

I remember the copier in the staff room at school printed all the class notes in bright purple and the ink got you high

think that was the start of my sniffing everything to see if it gave a kick

Ah, the old banda machine.

.....collecting "Golliwog" tokens, when you could cash them in for an enamelled one, to clip onto your clothes!

that might be it mouse
a whole generation of strung out kids

Ours was in a tiny broom cupboard so it should have had maximum effect but I don't remember getting really high off it. I suppose it could be a case of "if you remember, you weren't there".

you didnt get 'really' high. For that you used an aerosol and a sock

Round our way the primary use of aerosols was as flame throwers.

In that case mouse you missed out on a very strange and funny world....(I wouldnt try it now btw)

We had another use for socks when I was a teenager

Having several Playboy centrefolds on your bedroom wall

When a racist attack involved blood and broken bones instead of the use of prohibited words.

people took care of their shoes and had them soled and heeled.
