Phew, that headline will have the bleeding-hearts and hand-wringers reaching for the smelling salts to revive them.

Passed out whilst reading Betfair eh?

Also need to bring back The Stocks on the village green - but need to bring them back quickly as obviously no fruit and veg to throw at them after March 29th. Wink

The stocks were employed by civil and military authorities from medieval to early modern times including Colonial America. Public punishment in the stocks was a common occurrence from around 1500 until at least 1748. The stocks were especially popular among the early American Puritans, who frequently employed the stocks for punishing the "lower class".

Things were great in the 1500's - Make Britain Great Again!

The Isle of Man was the last place to have birching,I think I'm right in saying that they
never had to birch someone twice.

That's the trouble you see, they're not afraid of authority.

It's corporal punishment they're afraid of. You have to bring that back first or everything else will be a waste of time.

Crippen is correct in his assertion that the scumbags aren't afraid of authority ; the only way to frighten them into subservience is to break them both mentally and physically. It should be plain to our politicians that trying to reason with them is just a waste of time;these 'people' are wild animals who must be tamed or put down.Just get on with it and forget about the human rights crap spouted by the wishy washy liberals.  They pollute the country and must be dealt with once and for all.

maybe parents should take some responsibility for their kids instead of blaming everything else for their kids behaviour

The fear of pain has held society together for centuries, it still does in many countries.

First we have to stop putting faint-hearted people in charge of our laws and justice system who have never seen street life.
They're the real problem, the thugs are simply a by product of these people's meddling in things concerning human nature of which they know very little.

In the Middle ages When things weren't going well (because successive groups of people in power had fecked everything up) and ignorant people were looking for somebody (anybody at all really) to blame, this went very well:

As part of the infamous “swimming test,” accused witches were dragged to the nearest body of water, stripped to their undergarments, bound and then tossed in to to see if they would sink or float. Since witches were believed to have spurned the sacrament of baptism, it was thought that the water would reject their body and prevent them from submerging. According to this logic, an innocent person would sink like a stone, but a witch would simply bob on the surface. The victim typically had a rope tied around their waist so they could be pulled from the water if they sank, but it wasn’t unusual for accidental drowning deaths to occur.

Obviously would be a nightmare now with all these human rights busy bodies getting in the way.

Much to be learned from history JC but obviously all the best solutions to difficult problems are a three word populist soundbite - send em back, build the wall, lock her up, take back control, - you probably know the rest of them.

Norman Tebbit's cricket test would be more appropriate these days.

All time worst maybe - Strong and Stable.

So many angry, disenfranchised, disillusioned people about these days - all looking for somebody to blame Coupled with ease of manipulating them via modern media, the winners are the very appropriately named Mad Men in an era when the best slogan wins every time.

Looks like you're doing the same TM, by blaming those who are blaming others. Which makes you no different, so get down off your pedestal.

Quite a few knocking past medieval practices, while not acknowledging that importing current medieval cultures is causing lots of killings. If medieval behaviour is unacceptable we should stop it coming here.

What were they doing right then, that we are doing wrong now?

In the States they have the most fatherless generation currently. (Outside of war).

We are on course for that, especially among black communities. Good Fathers and Mothers combine to provide a stability, discipline and identity for kids. There's no need for Plod when you have good parenting.

The values are passed down, generation to generation. Good, or bad..

There was a television programme about birching on the Isle of Man.
I remember the words of the officer who used to administer the birch to convicted wrongdoers.

He said: ''I don't recall any of them coming back for second dose.''

That's all we need to know about the effectiveness of corporal punishment.

My school in the 80s was notoriously tough. The teachers were scared of the Head never mind us.

A strong word or 20 at Assembly did the trick. If not, the cane for you.  His deputy had his Black Book. God help anyone in that. Other teachers were hard. You daren't utter a 'please sir' to some of them.

If you wore white socks you'd be for the high jump. We knew where we stood. We knew our place.

We all turned out good. The Head died last year. A few weeks later his wife followed him. RIP - you served us well. Happy

If any youth who was caught carrying a knife was birched after being convicted in a court, then knife carrying would drop sharply overnight.

How many lives would that save for the sake of a few sore bums?

mm - classic deflection.

You're not that stupid to ignore the point.

When we left at the end of term, teachers would be positioned from the school to the road. If anyone SPOKE, they would be recalled. Now that's discipline.
