Mr Donald said that since 2010, cuts meant that there were 22,000 fewer officers and that the "once revered British model of policing is currently on its knees and facing extinction".

Responding to the survey, Policing Minister Nick Hurd said the government recognised that "policing's greatest asset is its people" and extra money was being made available to recruit more officers.

He said: "I am delighted that parliament has approved our funding package for next year, which will increase investment up to £970m, including money raised through council tax.

"This funding settlement recognises the demands on police forces and police and crime commissioners are already setting out plans to recruit more officers as a result.

"We take the well-being of police officers and staff very seriously, which is why we launched the Front Line Review to listen to their concerns and have invested £7.5 million in a new national police well-being service."  A whaaat?

Meanwhile, arrests for comments on Twitter, the routine harassment of motorists and the reluctance to investigate any other crime short of murder continues.

It's little to do with austerity, more to do with the choices made and prioritised by individual Chief Constables.

Cameron has his fingerprints all over this mess.

He's the one who created the position of police crime commissioner.

So now the role of chief constables has been undermined by these overpaid charlatans, and the people who did know what they were doing now sit back and let the poseurs get on with it.

There have been laws against Female Genital Mutilation for years, but only now in 2019 have we seen a first successful prosecution in the UK. (I also hardly need mention the Industrial Scale Rape of sexually-underaged white girls by organised gangs of primarily Pakistani/African heritage men, ignored by Policing bodies for decades).

Examples of where Parliament wrote laws against such abuse, but the Police Forces of Britain did NOT feel duty bound to enforce them.

Sir Christopher has not commented when approached by the Mirror.

Instead he told the Daily Telegraph he was in favour of the FGM legislation but wanted it to be debated properly by MPs.

He said: “It is a fundamental point… Even the Government insists on having its own Bills debated on second reading."

Asked about his response to the criticism from the Cabinet ministers, he said: "It is a pity they are indulging in virtue-signalling rather than looking at the substance."

He added: "My constituents know what I am doing. We are having letters saying 'what is Parliamentary democracy all about?' I object to Bills going through undebated at second reading."
