The Big Question :

Nicky Campbell presents topical debate live from Appleton Academy, Bradford.

He asks: should gambling be made socially unacceptable?

And, do some communities ignore human rights law?

I'm watching it now, if society deems gambling " socially unacceptable " then our entire lives will be controlled to the extent of alcohol, relationships, etc to the point of being told when to breath and no point to anything in life other than the rat race the government tries to force us into .

There are more people who die with alcohol abuse, do we go back to the days of prohibition ?

What's with the future tense?

Any time gambling is addressed by the mass media it's in the context of 'problem' gambling. Jilly Goolden and Oz Clarke can get a show extolling the wirtues of alcohol (no problem with that) and Keith Floyd can be a bit of a lad re booze on his cookery show but where is the tv punting equivalent?

You get on the stock exchange, fk over the Third World good and proper and indulge in 'casino investing' - and you're a buccaneering captain of Capitalism; hell do it badly enough and put the entire banking system at risk - and the government passes the hat round for you!

Have a well-thought-out punt on one in the 3.30 at Wincanton - and you're a no-good bum!
Report aaronh January 20, 2019 11:48 AM GMT
probably only on mass media in that form because it's not newsworthy in any other sense than it's impact on society.

a "socially unacceptable" activity wouln't be able to throw tons of ads at you every time there is a big football match on

the portrayal of playing financial markets as not gambling is laughable though

Good discussion, some excellent points made.

Interestingly (for me) it's from the Appleton Academy in Bradford, named after the phycisist Sir Edward Appleton.

He gave his name to a house at Hanson school, Bradford, and sure enough I was in Appleton house.

My aunty was a friend of his much younger sister, Dorothy.

the women of the world spend 10 times more money on face make up than people spend on gambling, now a least a gambler has a chance of winning once in a while but alas no matter how much a women spends on age wrinkle cream, botox and make up she will still end up wasting her money because she will get old,so lets call for a ban on face make up because its the biggest waste of money of all.

Anyone who is profitable long term should not be classing themselves as a gamble or to be gambling clearly lots of knowledge/skill involved.

In terms of it being another tax on the generally poor, i'd be for provided these 2 forms of gambling are socially unacceptable first.

Do we all stop fornicating with beautiful ladies ( or ugly ones when standards drop) due to a few uncontrollable sex pests? What a mad society, tbh if someone is thick enough to believe they can beat fixed odds in casino or fixed odds terminals they are just as likely to be conned from an email from a Nigerian business man asking for funds transfer so lets ban internet as well. I'd personally ban no contraception "relations" from low IQ people so we don't have these problems.
Report DenzilPenberthy January 20, 2019 1:20 PM GMT
Those writing about and pushing these issues don't have a clue about 'gambling' or 'betting' believe the bookie always wins and those who 'gamble' are always addicted losers just giving away money day after day.
The idea that there are ordinary people capable of winning and are being stopped from 'betting' or 'gambling' is beyond those involved in the discussions.

Gambling, logically, is the lowest common denominator that in itself has no tangible end product.
Its akin to the absurdity of Sisyphus, but given that the west is nuts deep into the spiv culture of trading ethereal assets how can they ever discredit it?

Personally I view it much as Diogenes looked at commerce within the marketplace....he would rather roll his barrel (Jar) around for no reason whatsoever than contribute to a corrupt and greedy society.

"do some communities ignore human rights law"

^^^^^ no they dont or shouldn't anyway, this is the medias/governments way of normalising the removal of human rights, by saying - "oh its not being used anyway" - it makes people more accepting of its removal

And gambling socially? what does that mean? is it bookies/fobts? because they wont remove gambling at the race tracks will they!? they are moving all gambling online

Hence the push to lower fobt limits but not online limits, fobts £2? there's online slots out there that can be spun for £100, yet absolutely nothing from the mainstream media outlets on that one

Oh I wonder why Crazy

The games are afoot it seems
Report SontaranStratagem January 20, 2019 2:52 PM GMT
Why don't people question what they're being told by the media?

Why don't they ask counter questions? and push the media for an answe?

The media just move from story to story without ever being hold to task on their previous round of bull s*** Sad

Yet they could have ended the shut down last night with Trumps compromise, yet Trump is still the evil one? I'm no fans of Trump but christ almighty they don't ever get challenged the MSM
Report moisok January 20, 2019 2:56 PM GMT
they don't even get people on the progs to give alternative opinions or do a critique

investigative journalism has faded - most of the news etc is taken from a 'news' source and simply repeated

anything that does not fit an agenda - the editors simply throw it away (particularly on TV)
