I'm watching it now, if society deems gambling " socially unacceptable " then our entire lives will be controlled to the extent of alcohol, relationships, etc to the point of being told when to breath and no point to anything in life other than the rat race the government tries to force us into .

they should just show people this forum if they want to make gambling socially unacceptable
|
|
By:
I say !

but the health and safety brigade told me my knitting needles were too sharp and have stopped me
look anything is potentially dangerous , you can't keep banning things to control behaviour in a small percentage of individuals that are irresponsible |

There are more people who die with alcohol abuse, do we go back to the days of prohibition ?

What's with the future tense?
Any time gambling is addressed by the mass media it's in the context of 'problem' gambling. Jilly Goolden and Oz Clarke can get a show extolling the wirtues of alcohol (no problem with that) and Keith Floyd can be a bit of a lad re booze on his cookery show but where is the tv punting equivalent? You get on the stock exchange, fk over the Third World good and proper and indulge in 'casino investing' - and you're a buccaneering captain of Capitalism; hell do it badly enough and put the entire banking system at risk - and the government passes the hat round for you! Have a well-thought-out punt on one in the 3.30 at Wincanton - and you're a no-good bum! |
|
By:
probably only on mass media in that form because it's not newsworthy in any other sense than it's impact on society.
a "socially unacceptable" activity wouln't be able to throw tons of ads at you every time there is a big football match on the portrayal of playing financial markets as not gambling is laughable though |

The Big Question :
Just when I thought bad TV could not get any worse, who apart from the spotted one watches this pap? |

Good discussion, some excellent points made.
Interestingly (for me) it's from the Appleton Academy in Bradford, named after the phycisist Sir Edward Appleton. He gave his name to a house at Hanson school, Bradford, and sure enough I was in Appleton house. My aunty was a friend of his much younger sister, Dorothy. |

Sad story from son of father who secretly gambled away £500,000 over 30 years and ended up in jail !

A wise old sage once said , leave religion out of gambling but with horses do what Jesus would have done.. find one that resembles a donkey and lay it.

I was going to sing a song this morning but then i thought better of it ,just in case the writer of the song sued me .
perhaps we should be all allowed to sing what ever we like,"lets say a guy could be allowed sing 3 songs for ten quid" ![]() |

ban the bingo and the lotto first

and then ban trading on the stock exchange, perhaps if we all wore pin stripe suits when we entered into a bookie's office this would clean up the image

the women of the world spend 10 times more money on face make up than people spend on gambling, now a least a gambler has a chance of winning once in a while but alas no matter how much a women spends on age wrinkle cream, botox and make up she will still end up wasting her money because she will get old,so lets call for a ban on face make up because its the biggest waste of money of all.

Just because some people cannot control their gambling or drinking
Does not mean that we ban it for the vast majority who do. Gambling and Alcohol are gifts from God I make full use of them |
|
By:
We claim we are society of choice
We will not be if we stop gambling and alcohol and while I am here can we smoke pot legally here Why do our governments believe it is their job to make us suffer? |
|
By:
i gamble so much more money than i do at beauty salons and on make up probably because i do not need to

Do we all stop fornicating with beautiful ladies ( or ugly ones when standards drop) due to a few uncontrollable sex pests? What a mad society, tbh if someone is thick enough to believe they can beat fixed odds in casino or fixed odds terminals they are just as likely to be conned from an email from a Nigerian business man asking for funds transfer so lets ban internet as well. I'd personally ban no contraception "relations" from low IQ people so we don't have these problems.
|
|
By:
The lottery and scratch cards out da window so?
In terms of it being another tax on the generally poor, i'd be for provided these 2 forms of gambling are socially unacceptable first. |
|
By:
Those writing about and pushing these issues don't have a clue about 'gambling' or 'betting' believe the bookie always wins and those who 'gamble' are always addicted losers just giving away money day after day.
The idea that there are ordinary people capable of winning and are being stopped from 'betting' or 'gambling' is beyond those involved in the discussions. |

mouseI actually agree there...alcohol and gambling do not mix, it affects our judgement Probably be worse with pot |

why is reality tv not banned? very addictive for many people.A friend of mine has a couple of nail bars and she often says trying to have a normal conversation of whats happening in the world is just a waste of time with a lot of the younger generation as they are clueless. But start talking about reality tv you cannot shut them up
