You'll never convince me darts is a sport.

...while tennis is predominantly a sport reserved for the privileged.

The logic was that people said darts is a hobby and not a sport, the money won by beating people in comps wouldn’t have been taxable if it wasn’t a profession.

I have a feeling we are going to end up hearing about everything British people ever did. We've already heard of greatest writer and TV invention. ALl this to support the assumption that Murray is the greatest British sportsman(British only!)

Snooker isn't a sport either. Games played in pubs while drinking pints can't be sports. I'm surprised I have to explain this. When you did P.E at school did the teacher ever take you down to the local and get the drinks in and split the class into darts and pool?

I think my post has started a different debate. My point was:

If you ask me who was the greatest german sportsperson, I could say Graf or Schumacher. At the same time, both these players could claim to be the greatest in their individual sport as well.

And when its asked who's the greatest British sportsman, we are torn between Andy Murray and if Darts is a sport or not. This was the thing that was surprising for me. I was expecting some names to pop up which would easily have been the best in their sport overall, not just in Britain. No such name popped up that I knew. That's all I was surprised about. That Murray, with 3 slams, 2 olympics and a davis, is considered the best britain has ever produced!

School PE was about fitness
Not about carving out a career.
What % of all kids who did PE turned it into a profession?
Very very few.

Come to think of it Murray wasn’t the most successful ginger either, Steve Davis was.

The greatest motorcyclist ever ? That’s Mike Hailwood
The point is also you could name other great British motorcyclists, any Germans

Formula 1 ? Shumacker has 7 , Hamilton has 5 and still going
Then we have Clark and Surtees and Jackie Stewart and grame hill and mansell and other world champions

It’s the same across the board

Britain dominates world motorsport

Football ? Yes Britain is the most successful football country in club football in the world   , more than any other nation
Including Germany or Italy or France etc ( never mind Australia )

In that case the logic is flawed.

Oh, but football is such a complicated game that obviously only foreigners can make English teams succesful. It's just not a sport made for the English. The first English coach in points per game appears at like the 20th position.

edy British teams were more successful in Europe before they had any foreign players

They won more European trophies than any other country

And they had more different teams that won them than any other nation

Much greater strength in depth you see, like all sports

Yes JML

The logic that darts was a hobby was indeed flawed.

SO like Murray and his Davis cup medal, you had to dig up some irrelevant stuff to show us how great british footballers have been?

Sorry couldn't resist the football post.

I suppose they must have the most number of World Cup wins since they're the best in the world. I'll go and check that since I don't follow that girlie game.

You could argue no sportsman is professional
No sportsman provide a good nor a service, they undertake in competition provided by others
They are more akin to gamblers, and the activity of gambling isn’t taxable.
