Cry does my head in

It is twenty nineteen ffs

BBC announcers seem still under orders to give the 'two thousand and....' . Strangely, with their programmes commemorating the end of WWI, they never said it ended in 'Nineteen Hundred And Eighteen', it was just 'nineteen eighteen'.

I thought from 2010 onwards we were gonna start the 'twenty ten' etc, but the 2,000 & just goes on Sad . Even stuff like the Olympics and Euros - twenty twelve, twenty sixteen etc that everybody used - didn't kill it off, and they just resumed the Two Thousand And Seventeen.... Angry

Surely from Twenty Twenty we will never hear 'two thousand and...' again Plain

People simply say what rolls off the tongue rather than saying one way or the other to annoy people.

2020 will be pronounced as twenty twenty.

two thousand and nineteen is technically correct, clue is in the number 2019

twenty nineteen actually means nothing, you wouldn't tell someone you just bought a new sofa for twenty nineteen pounds would you, it'd be what it is, two thousand and nineteen pounds.

It's the year of our Lord two thousand and nineteen. It's about 700 years behind that for our medieval cousins.

OP is correct, it costs a lot of money in wasted time and energy to say "2000 & XX"

On the BBC think of how much license fee money has been wasted by all those people wasting 2 valuable seconds every time they say 2000 & whatever. It soon adds up, we could get better value for money saying 20 19. That's not to mention when in general conversation the person talking to you wastes 2 or 3 seconds of you're life that you could be doing something better or more productive.

Well I should think that will be the case in a years time. The point is two thousand and nineteen doesn't roll off anyone's tongue, it is just people imagining it is the correct way to pronounce years, when it is something that has been invented recently, in total contrast to the way it was done for centuries beforehand.

Well I wouldn't say centuries. Decades maybe. Centuries ago it would have been worse cos they would say something like "The year of our Lord thirty two and sixteen hundred years"

There is a common sense way to say years and prices, so it is not just saying the number. Two thousand and nineteen pounds is OK. But would you say you bought a bag of chips for 'one point eight five pounds', or give your birth year as 'nineteen hundred and eighty nine' ?

Never given it any thought but on reflection I always say 19 60, 20 18 and etc.

Must admit I only started saying "twenty" from 2018. It is easier, but takes a bit of getting used to after saying "two thousand and..." for the first decade.

The big one is why we never came up with a satisfying name for the decade we have now. Noughties, blank, 20s,30s,40s,50s,60s etc..

70s, 80s roll off the tongue. What is this decade? It needs a good name.

I'm going to call it Decadey McDecadeFace.
