Last month had an acquiantance/distant relative die of bowel cancer aged just 36 a clean liver didn't drink/smoke not overweight couldn't go to the toilet so went to get checked was already stage 4. The trouble is people don't believe industries and governments would allow these kind of things to happen. The problem, as usual, is greed. Treatment of cancer and other long term illnesses are a massive cash cow for big pharma companies, etc. Enough money to significantly influence gov. policy. Enough money to ensure people are given these conditions purposefully, or at least turn a blind eye to the causes.

We knew decades ago that burned toast is carcinogenic along with scorched meat.
Yet food adverts including toast always show black parts on the toast, and it's routine to serve steak with scorched areas showing the marks from the bars on the griddle even if it's pink inside.
As for processed animal food products like bacon, no one even tries to cover up the hazards of eating these any more as the dangers are so well known.
Even eating properly cooked meat without any burned bits is considered risky.
That's only the cancer risk from eating animal products. The risk of heart disease from eating meat is another major factor to consider.
People should wise up and start to look after themselves with regard to what they eat, because no one else is going to while money is involved.

Muffins come with burned black bits, before you take then out of their wrappings.
The crust on bread is black on one side from baking.
Yet no one seems to give eating burned food a second though, they think it's harmless.

Studies have shown that animal protein intake is linked to cancer cell growth. Others show that diets rich in animal protein significantly increases the risk of cancer. https://www.livescience.com/43839-too-much-protein-help-cancers-grow.html
I very rarely eat bacon as I prefer chicken to be honest. On the odd occasion I fancy a rare bacon sandwich, is uncured any healthier?
Or is it really keep away.

Easy to find proper bacon - nitrite free cured bacon from properly raised pigs available all over the place. Your local butcher may be biased but his agenda can be easily and carefully compared with that of those on here.

Thanks blackbarn. I intended to have a word with some local butchers. Can't believe I've been stupid enough to think cured was more healthy. It's the way they plaster it over the packaging sucking idiots like me in assuming it's healthier. Oh well. Live and learn.

It's like the equivalent of vaping instead of smoking bigmo I used to consume large amounts of grass fed hormone free meat/dairy etc. thinking I was on the healthy option whilst shelling out decent wedge, only to find the real benefits come from drastically cutting the intake of all meat products unfortunately nitrate free or not.

The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is about 1 in 15 for males (less for females) which is a bit less than 7%.
The IARC suggests that eating 50g a day of processed meat increases the risk by 18%
18% of 7% is 1.26%. Is that a big enough reason for giving up eating sausages and bacon? It's your call but it's just another scare story in my view. If they legislate to reduce the level of these chemicals, all well and good as long as they don't make the meat unsafe for other reasons. I won't lose sleep over it.

Yes, that's probably true. It's the same if you regularly drink alcohol, smoke or are overweight and don't eat much roughage. We all make lifestyle choices and when doing so it's useful to be in possession of whatever scientific information is available.

I presume the effect is cumulative, so, it makes more sense to give up these things when you are 18.
If you are 60.....?
Maybe need to tailor Foinavon's calculation further on the basis many of us are unlikely to live more than 20-25 years anyway.

I would agree with that, Jack. When you get to retirement age, there's probably not a great deal of benefit to changing your lifestyle if it's going to stress you out. The one exception might be quitting smoking as you could develop or exacerbate COPD which can be quite a setback to your quality of life.

I was referring to how your joyous demeanour may have magnified itself even further with advancing years, doc, and anyway I'm not sure how you'd be able to ascertain what shape I'm in from this range.
