I couldn't believe it when the other week, i happened to look out into my garden and there, happily strolling away on the lawn was a Pheasant.A pheasant in Huyton? I quietly opened the back door thinking it would see me and fly away but no it came towards me, almost as bold as brass, i went back into the kitchen and grabbed some peanuts that i feed to the mad Jackdawes, every morning, and i then sprinkled them on the garden path.I then carefully closed the door and quickly went upstairs to get my camera and catch a pic, but unfortunately my pheasant friend had other ideas and so after eating the nuts it must have then scarpered. Never mind, maybe it will return some day.

'Jack...', there is not much meat on a duck despite it having a big frame/carcass; a 2kg (Gressingham) one will probably cater for about 4 proper meat eating adults unlike a turkey, but the meat is richer and succulent. The breast is the best bit (I can eat a whole one and I'm not a meat person). May I suggest a 2nd one, and with the trimmings there will be sufficient meat to go round. Sorry 123, my poor attempt at seasonal humour. ![]() Really looking forward to it btw. Been preparing the red cabbage as tastes better reheated. Red cabbage with prunes and orange, a little fried onion and cinnamon and cloves. |

Jack - Hope you enjoy your duck. Remember to remove the wishbone before cooking as this makes carving the breast much easier. Loads of vids/advice on how to do this on the net.

Result on my lamb. Cashier noticed the lamb was out of date that day. I kicked up a fuss saying it was disgraceful having bought it from the butchers counter. Price £19.95 reduced to £12

One duck feeds 2 people - just cut it straight down the middle. Mix a tablespoon of honey with juice from half an orange and pour it over the top. Roast in fairly hot oven so skin goes nice & black. Don't bother with that hot orange sauce lark. Simply peel a couple of oranges, cut into segments and toss in oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Serve that with it in a seperate bowl, so people can spoon it over the duck together with roast potatoes and peas - that's more than enough veg. Make a thinnish gravy out of the giblets as well. That's how my Mum use to serve it for me & my Dad. Be prepared for messy fingers mind.

Probably chicken and ham. My son and his family are hosting it and are planning to get a large chicken today while we are providing the cooked ham. It will be in Whitchurch near Cardiff so it will be our first trip since the Severn bridge charge was removed.

I stopped eating meat over 2 years ago because I used to visit the Acorn urban farm in Kirby and play with the pigs, I loved the pigs.I used to take them the apples that fell
from my garden tree Anyway, I returned one day after taking some photos at the farm and as I was having my ham sandwich, tomato, branston pickle, I thought about my little piggy friends and decided there and then to stop eating meat, for a time anyway. That time has now turned into , 2 years. Also, those very disturbing photos of pigs crammed into crates inside an abattoir that Kenny Mann posted here, also made a contribution Culvin, I'm delighted that I had some part, however small in you stopping eating pigs, and meat in general. Pigs are such delightful, curious animals that the picture of them in crates, which i still have, was absolutely sickening. I've posted it a few times, most ignore it without comment, but a few including shrewd dude and another whose name escapes me start arguing with me, as if there's anything to argue about. Of course not all pigs are treated like this, and in the UK I hope there's none, and the crates have been banned in EU countries but some are still using them. So if you have any concern for animal welfare buy British, and ignore labels such as produced in the UK using EU meat. |

We've been advised for decades that saturated fat is deleterious to health.
Animal products are loaded with saturated fats. Processed meat is carcinogenic. While scorched protein also gives us cancer, with meat consumption itself regarded as a cancer risk. https://www.cancercouncil.com.au/21639/cancer-prevention/diet-exercise/nutrition-diet/fruit-vegetables/meat-and-cancer/ They don't tell smokers to cut down on smoking cigarettes or alcoholics to drink less. They tell them to pack it in altogether. So why tell people to cut down on eating animal products full of saturated fat, and possible carcinogens, instead of not eating it? Despite the efforts of health professionals in the pay of the animal food industry to play down the risk, eating animal products can be very bad for us indeed. |

Lamb.
I'm a big animal lover so I have to force myself not to think about how meat gets on my plate. |

It's not necessarily a bad old life for the animals. You just have to try and find out exactly where you're getting the meat from. It's why I stick to a local farm for sausages. You can't tell me that these pigs are unhappy:

Wish all pigs and animals were kept like that, screaming, but there's lots of horrendous videos out there too.
