Dragon - "capon" - great choice!!

The barn will be Rib of Beef as usual, but we have 2 guests this year who do not eat beef so my butcher has sourced me a small(ish!!!) capon. It will be beautiful cold with bubble and squeak on Boxing Day, as will what remains of the beef. Merry Christmas.

I stopped eating meat over 2 years ago because I used to visit the Acorn urban farm in Kirby and play with the pigs, I loved the pigs.I used to take them the apples that fell
from my garden tree

Anyway, I returned one day after taking some photos at the farm and as I was having my
ham sandwich, tomato, branston pickle, I thought about my little piggy friends
and decided there and then to stop eating meat, for a time anyway. That time has now turned into , 2 years.

Also, those very disturbing photos of pigs crammed into crates inside an abattoir that Kenny Mann posted here, also made a contribution

Culvin, I'm delighted that I had some part, however small in you stopping eating pigs, and meat in general. Pigs are such delightful, curious animals that the picture of them in crates, which i still have, was absolutely sickening.

I've posted it a few times, most ignore it without comment, but a few including shrewd dude and another whose name escapes me start arguing with me, as if there's anything to argue about.

Of course not all pigs are treated like this, and in the UK I hope there's none, and the crates have been banned in EU countries but some are still using them. So if you have any concern for animal welfare buy British, and ignore labels such as produced in the UK using EU meat.

Culvin, shame you are so far away from Cheam (Surrey) otherwise I would offer you a wild salmon parcel with ginger, mini peppers and spring onion in light soy.

After much discussion Mrs H has decided on duck.

The shopping list was put together last night and so dinner will include roast parsnips and carrots, red cabbage cooked with vinegar and spice, home made apple sauce, boiled little potatoes, frozen petite pois, pigs in blankets.
Think oranges are involved somewhere - maybe in the stuffing.

'Jack...', a good alternative if only catering for a small number. It is much easier to manage, and lots less cleaning up especially if one is using the breast. It is very tasty, and the trimmings (roast parsnips and carrots and red cabbage) sounds absolutely delicious - I had that (no cabbage) last wednesday.

There will be twelve of us.

Never had duck before.  Hope there will be enough meat to go round.

We will have turkey and gammon. My wife insists on having gammon. I like gammon (with a pineapple on top) egg and chips. I don't think having gammon as part of a roast is correct. I would like a nice leg or shoulder of pork instead - but my wife doesn't like pork - but likes gammon - but not with pineapple on top. I might buy a piece of pork anyway Happy

'Jack...', there is not much meat on a duck despite it having a big frame/carcass; a 2kg (Gressingham) one will probably cater for about 4 proper meat eating adults unlike a turkey, but the meat is richer and succulent. The breast is the best bit (I can eat a whole one and I'm not a meat person). May I suggest a 2nd one, and with the trimmings there will be sufficient meat to go round.

McCoy Carp - If you are going to buy a pork joint, buy what the butchers call "spare rib joint".  It has nothing to do with spare ribs as it is simply boned and rolled shoulder. It is the worlds best pig secretCool.  Perfect balance of meat to fat and crackling nearly all the way round.   Additionally your butcher will think that this is a bloke who knows his meat.

It's usual in polite society to refer to Turkey as ''white meat.''

So if they ask you where the white meat is - tell them it's over there next to the pork and beef.

"It's usual in polite society to refer to Turkey as "white meat".  Not your quote I know Crippen, but this is bo77ocks isn't it. In this context, white meat is merely the colloquial term for the breast meat of a fowl (Turkey, Chicken etc etc). Dark meat being the equivalent term for meat from said birds legs and wings.

Another one from my mum, who was in service in several big houses. The question is what can you pick up to eat off your plate.  Easy!!.  If it was flying when it was killed (Wild Duck, Goose, Pheasant, Partridge, Pigeon, Woodcock etc) you can pick up and eat off the bone.  Anything else, (Chicken or Turkey) must be knife and forked.

That's interesting blackbarn.

And look here:

Beef comes from plants, turkey comes from pigs and pineapples grow in Portsmouth.

it is astonishing the hype that goes around what is basically a roast dinner with a few extras chucked in . the pressure people are under to make it ' perfect' is nonsense. if you are lucky enough to have friends/ family around and it goes without mishap then it is a success. ..boxing day , kempton/ leopardstown on the box with cold leftovers and half empty wine bottles for me any day !

Thanks blackbarn. Think shoulder is the better cut even though it's cheaper, more fat, more moisture and flavour.

It is always a special occasion having family or friends round for dinner may it be at x'mas or just a social gathering. And if the food come up tasty and well cooked, a bonus; the get together is the most important, and food as an accompaniment.

if you are lucky enough to have friends/ family around

If you are lucky enough?

It depends on your wealth and age in most cases.

The aging widow living by herself in a rented house on benefits will typically spend Christmas by herself.
While someone with assets to leave in a will can depend on plenty of company.
That is the way of the today's society.

Try to imagine a house that's not a home.
Try to imagine a Christmas all alone.
That's where I'll be
since you left me.
My tears could melt the snow.
What can I do
without you
I've got no place, no place to go
It'll be lonely this Christmas
without you to hold
It'll be lonely this Christmas
Lonely and cold.
It'll be cold so cold
without you to hold
This Christmas

basically a sunday roast with a few things chucked in also some chucked  out which in the end makes it a lot different than a sunday roast,

in comes turkey,sprouts,parsnips,pigs n blankets,chipolata,crannberry sauce,
out go Yorkshire puds,colli,cabbage
add in xmas pud, brandy sauce etc and its still a once in the year meal for lots of people, including me who doesn't bother with sunday roasts
