I reckon I'd be good at that if I wasn't such a hard bugger.

i think that's a trait that's needed in that type of work tbh, Dr. I couldn't do it because i'd get too upset and likely involved.

I've done some volunteering for the RSPCA. I did home visiting, which involved meeting some fantastic people who were taking on a rescue animal. Giving your time is just as important as giving a donation.

ive done volunteer work, and know a lady who works for samaritans.

she was trained by them, and gets regular chats with others

not something for me, but if you fancy helping them, give them a ring.

they also have a fundraising team that need help.

He'd make them feel more suicidal, lol.

Seriously they get thousands of calls per Hour,  which is a hell of a lot so with training why not?

Just checking, yes,I believe I could help.In my early twenties,I called them myself,10 years earlier I had been deeply affected by being a victim of sexual abuse.I can remember the early (3am) call that I made to the Sam's that day,I think I can even remember the name of the listener who I spoke to, his name was Tom.I remember after that talk, feeling so much better.I've had lots of sH1t in life over the years, haven't we all, problems with alcohol, anxiety, etc,to cut long story short,I think I could help because i think I understand and I care.

Did some volunteering for The Samaritans.

I had a problem with their insistence that phone operators had to 'unload' and 'share' after a shift. I'm sure there were insurance reasons (i.e. they didn't want to be sued for volunteers claiming PTSD after taking some tough calls) but I have this thoroughly unmodern view of life that it's perfectly feasible for one to function and thrive even, with a bit of gumption, a well-rounded social life, self-awareness and basic internal fortitude.

I refuse to share! I refuse to nurture! I refuse to unload!

We agreed on a parting of the ways after I didn't attend a few of these compulsory post-shift sessions, preferring a bacon sandwich and a kip.

People ring Samaritans at very low points in their lives.

It can help people to have someone to talk to, and perhaps stops them doing something stupid or even fatal.

If people can be helped through this bottoming out, then they can go on and find something else.

Sadly some peoples problems are so bad it is impossible for them to get out...

this must be hard for the Samaritan trying to help them.

I wish you the best Culvin.

Training is thorough. It takes six months or more of training with Samaritans (and they'll check your background)as you would be meeting just once or twice a week but, in my experience, they foster such a good team spirit, it is not a chore at all. Very rewarding.

I phoned the samaritans and said "Im at th top of Beachy head and I'm gonna toss myself off" the woman on the other end of the line said "what about the people below?" I said "don't worry love they'll probably think it's just bird ****".
