People ring Samaritans at very low points in their lives. It can help people to have someone to talk to, and perhaps stops them doing something stupid or even fatal. If people can be helped through this bottoming out, then they can go on and find something else.Sadly some peoples problems are so bad it is impossible for them to get out...this must be hard for the Samaritan trying to help them.I wish you the best Culvin.
All that - true, but there are many reasons why folks phoned the Samaritans.
Someone to 'be with them' when they die. They do not want to be saved but they do not want to die 'alone'. That's a tough one.
The ultimate aggressive act. The ultimate 'FU World!' Again, not an easy one to deal with, especially when the caller goes through with it. There's plenty of people (some even in this citadel of fun even
) who think they are badass and 'don't give a fk about anything' but it's a smack in the face when you come up against someone determined to checkout, who really really does not give a sh1t anymore and treats life and the living with pure contempt.
And then there are the (largely) homosexual guys who want some cheap phone w@ank fodder (I'm assuming Culvin is a bloke), string you along with tales of misery, until they 'fly mother natures silver seed to a new home in the sun' and hang up.
You'll get acquainted with all this in training and I imagine the advent of social media and it's 'marketing of an idealised version of oneself' has exacerbated many suicidal tendencies among the vulnerable - certainly I imagine it's added a whole interesting new dimension to the Samrians reality.
BTW you don't give advice. You 'actively listen'.
For me, it was an interesting exercise and one I'm pretty proud of without ever discussing it (I mean other than in here to a roomfull of strangers) and it's good to know there's folks alive today who wouldn't be if it wasn't for me. Like I said, my issue was the enforced group therapy they went in for among the phone operators, which led to my parting of the ways.
Anyway, good luck if you do decide to go for it.
,you are naughty...it was Funny,though.
so i'll remember that one.
