i think that's a trait that's needed in that type of work tbh, Dr. I couldn't do it because i'd get too upset and likely involved.

I've done some volunteering for the RSPCA. I did home visiting, which involved meeting some fantastic people who were taking on a rescue animal. Giving your time is just as important as giving a donation.

ive done volunteer work, and know a lady who works for samaritans.

she was trained by them, and gets regular chats with others

not something for me, but if you fancy helping them, give them a ring.

they also have a fundraising team that need help.

Just checking, yes,I believe I could help.In my early twenties,I called them myself,10 years earlier I had been deeply affected by being a victim of sexual abuse.I can remember the early (3am) call that I made to the Sam's that day,I think I can even remember the name of the listener who I spoke to, his name was Tom.I remember after that talk, feeling so much better.I've had lots of sH1t in life over the years, haven't we all, problems with alcohol, anxiety, etc,to cut long story short,I think I could help because i think I understand and I care.

Did some volunteering for The Samaritans.

I had a problem with their insistence that phone operators had to 'unload' and 'share' after a shift. I'm sure there were insurance reasons (i.e. they didn't want to be sued for volunteers claiming PTSD after taking some tough calls) but I have this thoroughly unmodern view of life that it's perfectly feasible for one to function and thrive even, with a bit of gumption, a well-rounded social life, self-awareness and basic internal fortitude.

I refuse to share! I refuse to nurture! I refuse to unload!

We agreed on a parting of the ways after I didn't attend a few of these compulsory post-shift sessions, preferring a bacon sandwich and a kip.
Report Culvin December 18, 2018 5:33 PM GMT
Very interesting to me that,Hanx.THANKS!
Report UBLE/REGY December 18, 2018 6:03 PM GMT
People ring Samaritans at very low points in their lives.

It can help people to have someone to talk to, and perhaps stops them doing something stupid or even fatal.

If people can be helped through this bottoming out, then they can go on and find something else.

Sadly some peoples problems are so bad it is impossible for them to get out...

this must be hard for the Samaritan trying to help them.

I wish you the best Culvin.
Report UBLE/REGY December 18, 2018 6:04 PM GMT
Some people never take good advice either when it is offered, I have had that problem in life...…..oh wellLaugh
Report unitedbiscuits December 18, 2018 6:36 PM GMT
Training is thorough. It takes six months or more of training with Samaritans (and they'll check your background)as you would be meeting just once or twice a week but, in my experience, they foster such a good team spirit, it is not a chore at all. Very rewarding.
Report David Icke December 18, 2018 8:58 PM GMT
I phoned the samaritans and said "Im at th top of Beachy head and I'm gonna toss myself off" the woman on the other end of the line said "what about the people below?" I said "don't worry love they'll probably think it's just bird ****".
Report The Leopard December 18, 2018 9:17 PM GMT
Culvin.....I think you are not mentally tough enough to take on the problems of many suicidal people.....could be better to volunteer at an Old Peoples home or something......would be a lot less stressful than the Samaritans

You may not pass the initial tests (if they have any)..... anyway.

I have just seen the most pathetic response to a domestic abuse situation where the police were worried about the reaction of the male abuser where a young woman needs to be removed to a safe house.
The cops appeared to have no authority or confidence in dealing with the male - there was a female and male copper ONLY in attendance

it is totally unbelievable - - they sneaked out of the house  - I do not joke

I am just shaking my head about this  - wtf  -  the guy is violent and breaking the law - shirley one would be breaking heads when one does this  - I don't think I have much trust in these people any longer

but isn't that the view of many people now - no trust or little in the arm of the law

it is not operating in the interests of the general population

BUT WE CAN GET A CHILD SORTED IF HE GOES ON A UKIP SITE!!!!

All that - true, but there are many reasons why folks phoned the Samaritans.

Someone to 'be with them' when they die. They do not want to be saved but they do not want to die 'alone'. That's a tough one.

The ultimate aggressive act. The ultimate 'FU World!' Again, not an easy one to deal with, especially when the caller goes through with it. There's plenty of people (some even in this citadel of fun even Grin) who think they are badass and 'don't give a fk about anything' but it's a smack in the face when you come up against someone determined to checkout, who really really does not give a sh1t anymore and treats life and the living with pure contempt.

And then there are the (largely) homosexual guys who want some cheap phone w@ank fodder (I'm assuming Culvin is a bloke), string you along with tales of misery, until they 'fly mother natures silver seed to a new home in the sun' and hang up.

You'll get acquainted with all this in training and I imagine the advent of social media and it's 'marketing of an idealised version of oneself' has exacerbated many suicidal tendencies among the vulnerable - certainly I imagine it's added a whole interesting new dimension to the Samrians reality.

BTW you don't give advice. You 'actively listen'.

For me, it was an interesting exercise and one I'm pretty proud of without ever discussing it (I mean other than in here to a roomfull of strangers) and it's good to know there's folks alive today who wouldn't be if it wasn't for me. Like I said, my issue was the enforced group therapy they went in for among the phone operators, which led to my parting of the ways.

Anyway, good luck if you do decide to go for it.
