The BBC has launched a consultation that could mean the end of free TV licences for the over 75s.

Currently all households with people over 75 are entitled to a free licence, but that could change when the BBC takes control of the scheme in two years’ time.

In September, the BBC’s director-general, Lord Hall, admitted the corporation could scrap the television licences when it takes responsibility for the scheme in 2020.

He told MPs at the time: ‘We have got to be mindful of two things: we know the over-65s and over-75s consume many, many more BBC services than others. On the other hand, there is real hardship among some or many of those over 75.

‘This is such a difficult balance. It could continue exactly as it is. We could change it. I don’t know what the board [of governors] will decide.

‘This is a very difficult issue.’

There were 4,455,000 over-75s licences in force in 2017, which cost the BBC around £725m – about one-fifth of its budget.

‘The board does not underestimate the significance of the decision, its implications for the BBC and its audiences’.

BBC chairman David Clementi said: ‘We will listen to their views and balance all the .

^^ let me translate that last paragraph "we will listen to their views and balance all the options and arguments before making a decision but our decision has really already been made, we will indeed scrap free TV licences for the over 75's which we've been wanting to do for years now and we're only bothering wasting time with this consultation to make it look like we agonised over the change which should go some way to easing the blow/not making us look to the public like the greedy bastards that we of course all are."

Of course they should scrap it, after all they have newsreaders on £500,000 a year to pay.

all over 75s   just dont pay it, see what happens.

yeah, they'd have to start imprisoning old aged pensionsers then and that'd be a terrible look.

exactly, dont pay it . fk em. stop paying people ridiculous amounts to people for reading off a screen or playing a record and talking s hite  and until they do don't pay license.

its stupid to give it to all households with a single member over 75

it should only be granted to households where all the folk that
live at the address are over 75,

Report Coachbuster November 20, 2018 8:53 PM GMT
why over 75 ?   some 76+ y/o are very rich , many/most can afford to pay  ...plus they get the benefit of a state pension  ...what about those who die at 75 or younger ? ...they miss out altogether and don't get much back in way of a pension .

surely to make it fair  have a free service for under 30s when most of that age group is poor and so everyone in that bracket benefits ,or better still scrap the daft idea altogether

no age should expect handouts but instead have a liveable wage  ...but if they're offering free tvl's to an arbitary age  then the age should be the youngest not the oldest  ,doesn't make any sense otherwise  ....

Don't say bad things about the BBC, he who shall be not named will be on in a few minutes telling you shouldn't post these things on his chit chat! Laugh

Who is going to fund Huw Edwards 600k a year to read a teleprompter a few nights a week or Jon Sopel 1/4 a million a year to come on the news twice a week to say "trump is a ****" in less explicot language? I mean look at this list:
https://www.pressgazette.co.uk/more-than-40-bbc-journalists-paid-more-than-prime-minister-theresa-may-full-list-with-salary-details/

It's not like the BBCs output is geared much to old folk? Pensioners I know don't seem to watch it these days, more likely old stuff on ITV channels or documentaries on Sky if they have it.

Audio Description (can be the strange AD button on your remote control) can be amusing if it works, but it's not specifically a BBC thing.

To be fair, newsreaders don't just read the news, they have to be competent in challenging their guests live on air, from politicians to buisness leaders.
Report Just Checking November 20, 2018 10:10 PM GMT
When was the last time Huw Edwards interviewed anyone? I can't remember it at all. He reads a teleprompter on more than 1/2 a million a year.

Yes the likes of Marr or Neil at least have to prepare and try and interview people, (in the case of the former with debatable success).

Let the people who actually pay the licence fee decide on this question.
But that would involve making some part of the BBC accountable, I hear the shriekers shout, and we can't have accountability, oh no, people might demand more of it if the people being rooked to pay for things had a say in the spending, and that would never do in paternalistic old great Britain.

That’s the right and proper way to behave if you are a young person , don’t expect handouts that is no way for society to progress
The sooner young people learn that the better

Overtime is shocking now for the young new starters on low wages, rater than time and a half or double time their contracts state that they just
get their standard hourly rate for OT. Pretty crappy if youask me as this is a way for them to boost the monthly £££. One company contract I have seen even gave the standard hourly rate if the staff member worked a Sunday or bank holiday.

That’s terrible , when I was a young person I tried to work 100 hrs overtime a month
That was at time and a half and so that doubled my monthly take home pay

I had so much money I didn’t know what to do with the money
