Try this for size.We give India £98 million per year in foreign aid. They've just built the biggest statue in the world costing over £300 million.

V fxxked indeed, but we continue to view ourselves as both the nurse and the policeman of various countries of the world.....but only if it suits the current agenda!

How much does this lack of investment actually cost us ? Watched a programme this morning on insurance fraud which apparently adds £50 to all of our premiums. Then there's car crime, your 10k car gets nicked, you a pay out of 6 or 7k if your lucky. The lack of policing costs us all. Ringfenced foreign aid has to stop. Not got a problem sending aid to wartorn areas or earthquake victims but to allocate a set amount is just plain wrong

India and Pakistan run Necular, and Space programmes, costing billions, they are building nuclear-armed submarines - costing billions.
They have been at war (over Kashmir) since 1947 spending billions to this day...and the not small matter of thousands of lives. Siachen is the highest-altitude battlefield in the world. Pakistan and India spend billions in order to maintain troops there, with India spending a comparatively much higher amount because its troops are camped on a glacier and have to be supported by a fleet of helicopters. The 'high altitude clothing for their troops costs supplies by helicopters ets Does 'foreign aid to these two mean we are supporting war on two fronts??? |

Have to say I'm furious about this so an email to my MP will soon be on its way

Sending millions in 'aid' to a country that has its own space programme has got to be the most bizarre policy

Just to add salt.....By 2021 we could be spending about £14.5 billion a year on foreign aid, based on the Office for Budget Responsibility’s forecasts. Yet they tell us 1p on tax will save the NHS.

Funded ISIS in Syria, albeit indirectly. Money went to police forces in rebel held areas. All the money was paid in cash, apparently half went to paying the police weapons etc. The other half was given to ISIS so they wouldn't misbehave in the area being policed

Yes dan there are thousands of ONGOING misappropriation, For every hundred pounds that’s made in the UK, seventy pence goes towards foreign aid.
Another way to say this is that the government has a target to spend 0.7% of the UK’s Gross National Income on overseas development aid each year. Gross National Income (GNI) is the UK’s annual output of goods and services, plus any income we get from abroad. In 2016, the UK spent £13.4 billion on overseas aid, in line with the 0.7% target. |

I saw this a few days ago, unbelievable how big it is, nearly twice as big as Big Ben. |

Yeah in the middle of nowhere, nearest hotel about 80 miles away although there is plans for a hotel complex. As far as us given India aid I'm not sure we do anymore, however I know they used to give our money to other countries they deemed to need foreign aid

The only problem I have with foreign aid is I have little faith in governments from certain countries apportoning the donations to the areas/people that need it most, imo Britain would be better off directly being allowed to contract companies to build schools/hospitals/homes /delivering medical equipment instead etc

Most of it is bribes for one reason or another.

Yes dan I believe 'aid' to India has stopped but has increased to Pakistan by 1oo million!!.... 2 years ago Pakistan announced it would buy eight new submarines at a cost of around £4billion, with the country expected to lavish more than £10billion on new weapons by 2024. BTW Pakistan are the biggest recipient of this so called aid

As well as investing in policing we also need investment in prisons. We need spaces and staff in order to hand out long sentences instead of the short ones we currently have. We need segregation for prisoners who are dangerous and/or toxic to others.

Dear Mr Loughton,
Watching Question Time this week Kate Andrews made a statement regarding the amount we spend on policing England and Wales. An amount it turns out to be less than we give in foreign aid ! Since moving to the Offington area I have given you my support and more importantly my vote. Whether a person votes Labour or Conservative I would suspect the majority of voters choose a party that they feel will make their lives better in THIS country ! It is not right citizens of this country are being placed in danger due to a recognised shortage of police when we are giving tax pounds to foreign countries, especially ones that show little or no loyalty to this country. Take Pakistan, I believe our aid budget for them is £105 million. A country that not only has a space program but is also taking a delivery of eight submarines from China. It is many years since I served in the submarine service thirty two to be precise so I'm not in touch with the cost of running a boat today. What I do know is the cost of running a sub back then was about £30,000 A day. So please enlighten me how the government can justify this use of tax pounds to a country unwilling to look after it's own citizens but willing to increase its military might in an already unstable part of the world. I am not against aid for those in need. I strongly support the government's position of funding refugee camps due to the conflict in Syria, also to the recent earthquake victims in Indonesia. However I am strongly against the ringfencing of foreign aid, it only leads to corruption and waste and sadly leaves the citizens of this country and our county of not getting the services we deserve. I look forward to your response. Just fired this off to my local MP |

In 2016, the UK spent £13.4 billion on overseas aid, in line with the 0.7% target. The truth is this: In 2016, the UK spent around 2.5% of national income on overseas aid, round number, according to the World Bank - of which 1.8% came from NOT GOVERNMENT. Absent communicable diseases and disaster relief, the UK government should get the feck out of peoples lives, stop rooking the taxpayer under the pretence that we have to be grateful to them for giving our money to foreigners for their chosen programmes like gifting a million a year to the Clinton and Carter foundations ( I kid you not ). The free market has got this covered. |

^ Two more statues are being constructed in other BJP-ruled states. In Maharashtra, a 61-meter statue of Shivaji, the 17th century Maratha king who resisted Muslim rule, is being built, while Uttar Pradesh will host a 91-meter statue of Hindu god Rama. Each statue will cost an estimated US$300 million.
The statues are meant to placate Hindu feelings and help Modi's party in the national elections due next May, his critics say. Hindus form 966 million or 80 percent of India's population of 1.2 billion. Muslims account for 172 million or 14 percent while Christians comprise 29 million or 2.3 percent. |

^^ The 182-meter-high Statue of Unity, the towering figure of India's first deputy prime minister and independence leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, is almost four times bigger than the 46-meter Statue of Liberty in New York.

Cheers trilby, I'll post his response when I get it. Usually ten days or so. It's what we all need to do, hold our politicians to account. When I lived in America they used to reckon a written letter (long before email) was worth 600 votes. That's to say if someone took the time to write 600 other people felt the same way. |
|
By:
Tbf he usually replies in person or will put a hand written line on a standard letter. If he dosen't I'll chase him down at one of his street surgeries. Either way I'll let you know what he says.
