I was wondering if carnage and carnival have the same word root and they do! Carnival apparently means "to put away the meat".

I heard that when coppers get spat on, they whisk them off to the hospital to give them antibiotics.
The antibiotics make them feel ill of course, so I wonder how much time off they get for that? |

Revellers will be asked to pass through airport-style metal detectors at the Notting Hill Carnival in a bid to deter criminals carrying knives.
The knife arches will be openly deployed for the first time at several “strategic” entrances to the carnival area this weekend amid fears of violence among gangs. Police say slightly more officers will be on duty at this year’s event, with more than 6,000 officers and staff being deployed each day. On Sunday 6,162 will be on duty and the figure will rise to 6,858 on Monday and 25 on tuesday . Good to know..... Meanwhile British Transport Police will use officers trained in spotting the behavioural characteristics of wrong-doers to deter offending ! |

I'm one of the few on chit chat that actually lives in London. Nobody, absolutely nobody I know goes to the Notting Hill carnival.

they did once locally around waterloo ages ago
35 percent drop in crime also in Hartlepool similar result chap in charge got suspended for his efforts he packed it in and I think he got elected as mayor if my memory serves me right |

Lived in London for 30 years some of them in Nottinghill on the Carnival route. Only stopped going when I got too old to enjoy it. Never saw any trouble. Thankfully there's Chitter Chatters who live 100's of miles away to tell me what I've missed. |

Lived in London late 70s early 80s never entered my mind about being stabbed, lived in Acton town. Often walked home from White City dogs through the White City estate not the nicest part of London.

what amazes me is how little attention it gets and how little any direct action is occurring
I am just thinking back to the troubles and how MUCH action there was battalions of infantry and a lot of special forces secret service etc involved them would this be because they may have been a threat to those in power and ultimately the stability of the uk this little scuffle emanating from newham etc is only a threat to the peasants whilst out walking or having a snooze at home in front of the box? |

It comes after hundreds of shops and homes were boarded up in the wealthy west London neighbourhood to avoid destruction over the bank holiday.

We need right-wing thinking administrations prepared to start banging heads together, once we're out of the EU of course. Then make it illegal to call other people racists, outlaw the word just as we've outlawed the N word and the P word. That should do it for a start. |
