x+y =1.10
y+100 =x therefore 2x +1.00 = 1.10 2x=0.10 x==0.05 y=1.05 |

By:
That's rather formal, Dunlaying, for me it was 10p/2 (£1 remainder 10p)
|
|

As long as you get to the right answer, that's all that matters. What are you reading now?

By:
What is 32 x 32?
If you ask 10 people, I'd wager only three or four would get the correct answer (without a calculator). |
|
By:
960 +64 would be my mental route to it.
|
|
By:
Same for me, Foi.
Except I did 10 x 32 x 3 to get to 960. |
|
By:
"960 +64 would be my mental route to it."
Exactly the same method as you Foinavon. |
|
By:
but if he had gone into poundland !!!!
sorry sorry sorry ![]() |
|
By:
Yes, 3x32 add a zero for me. The same thing. I tackle mental arithmetic the opposite way round to how it was taught at school for some unknown reason, but it works.

I HAVEN'T GOT ENOUGH FINGERS!!!

Good to see people can still do without a calculator, perhaps having been punters helps.

I think under pressure, many people would think 30 x 30 = 900 and then struggle.

There's an easier way than that

I happened upon a simple way to tell the difference between squared numbers, 'whats the diff between 25 squared and 35 squared for example'. 25x25=625 35x35=1225...difference 600. add 25+35=60 x by the difference 10 and you have 600. Amaxzing the rubbish we can process when not sleeping.
