My brain simply doesn't operate at your level lfc, but I still try. That's how I'll learn.

The answer is to simply provide something you couldn't say in the past.
That's all. |
By:
its very straightforward as dr crippen explains
By:
But blasphemy is not being accepted as an example?
By:
blasphemy was quite acceptable in the past and happened on an almost daily basis
not sure about now |
By:
almost every tv station or theatre or author has been guilty to a greater or lesser degree
to say nothing about private citizens there was I think a famous court case in the 60s as far as I know they got off |
By:
john Mortimer the qc?
By:
ah, the last person to be sent to jail for blasphemy was in 1921
By:
thats in Britain of course

You shouldn't need examples - it all depends WHEN you're talking about.
But there have ALWAYS been things it wasn't permissible to say in public. Censorship of letters and records and films has always taken place. Things which were considered obscene - HUGE list from the time broadcasting began. Slander and Libel - both examples of illegal free speech. Things which were against the public interest, during times of war, imprisonable. Before the industrial revolution, just about anything against the Church - often punishable by death. Non-government rules: Try going to a school playground and extolling the virtues of being a paedo. Try saying what you want to an employer and keeping your job Try some overt racism, in most places (using the 'n' word for example) Incitement to violence incitement to crime Incitement to hatred. Some of these are illegal - others are just against the common good and as such not acceptable by society. It was far stricter before than it is now. NO-ONE CAN JUST SAY WHAT THEY WANT TO, WHEN THEY WANT TO. You can look up your own fecking precise examples and stop the pedantic, ridiculous arguing. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS COMPLETELY FREE SPEECH. In other countries and at other times it is and has been FAR more strict than it is here. So whilst it is comparatively better here in terms of freedom to say most things. There are still limits. If not - posts wouldn't ever be removed from forums and there would be no censorship. If you cannot understand or agree with what this post says - there is no further room to discuss it. |

By:
in the past you were simply excommunicated...well of course no one could argue with that not being a suitable and fair thing
By:
Phew - STUDY's come back with a haymaker.
By:
Slander and Libel - both examples of illegal free speech.
Wrong, both civil not criminal. |
By:
you are mistaking telling lies with the right to free speech
no one has the right to tell lies its in the bible |
By:
lfc... does the fact that person was sent to jail for blasphemy not suggest they were not permitted to say whatever they did?
By:
very sill for people to think that because you cant slander or libel people it means we don't have free speech
By:
Try going to a school playground and extolling the virtues of being a paedo.
Didn't certain Labour party members do similar some decades ago? |

You're going back too far with the religious stuff.
Monty Python's Life of Brian puts that to bed. |
By:
Nope. It was obviously too much for you both.
By:
so you see monty python was part of our culture, in this free and Christian and democratic country
be thankful |
By:
could we still put on such a show in Britain today, in the theatre or on tv?
I don't know, we certainly couldn't do so with some other religions |
By:
Try saying what you want to an employer and keeping your job
Try some overt racism, in most places (using the 'n' word for example) The first is not illegal. And neither was the second. Ever watch Till death us do Part? |
By:
If we pick further through STUDY's tiresome post.
Apart from the obscenity laws and issues of state, there's nothing there to back his case. |
By:
If there was no monty python, there would be no fawlty towers
and England wouldn't be England that's` all you need to know |

jomo that was in 1921, none of us were alive lfc... apologies, you are right - on reading your question again you specify a timespan. I was going by Dr C's explanation, which didn't. Whitehouse I'm sure though brought about successful conviction(s) against someone. Monty Python (the TV series, not just Life of Brian) was censored. Live in Aspen interview provides an example. ![]() |

You're going back too far with the religious stuff. Monty Python's Life of Brian puts that to bed. I don't see how it does. It was banned in quite a lot of cities/counties on the grounds of blasphemy. |

It has been seen everywhere in Britain and in every home, so it hasn't been banned
