Trump Signs Bill Revoking Obama-Era Gun Checks for People With Mental Illnesses
. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/trump-signs-bill-revoking-obama-era-gun-checks-people-mental-n727221 . President Donald Trump quietly signed a bill into law Tuesday rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun. The rule, which was finalized in December, added people receiving Social Security checks for mental illnesses and people deemed unfit to handle their own financial affairs to the national background check database. Had the rule fully taken effect, the Obama administration predicted it would have added about 75,000 names to that database. President Barack Obama recommended the now-nullified regulation in a 2013 memo following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 first graders and six others dead. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns. The original rule was hotly contested by gun rights advocates who said it infringed on Americans’ Second Amendment rights. Gun control advocates, however, praised the rule for curbing the availability of firearms to those who may not use them with the right intentions. |

Why are so many mentally ill maybe a better question as knives can do as much damage ?
By:
I don't think knives can do as much damage though.
The gun used yesterday was a semi-automatic AR-15. The same gun that was used in the Vegas shooting, in the nightclub shooting in Florida, as well as San Bernardino, Sandy Hook and Colorado. Now you'd think a normal country would put two and two together and weigh up what possible legitimate reason a citizen would have for owning such a weapon and maybe decide to ban them from general sale. Damnit, a normal country would probably look at the number of mass shootings that go on within its borders, compared to other countries and decide to do something about the proliferation of guns altogether. But not Trump and not all the other politicians in the NRA's pocket. No, let's remove automatic checks on people with mental health problems from buying guns. Still, as long as the victims are in their thoughts and prayers. And remember, now is not the right time to talk about gun control. |

A single lorry attack could cause as many deaths as this shooting. If a nutter wants to kill they'll find a way. Too many of em walking the streets.

Another Florida school has started selling bulletproof backpacks.
That place is utterly depraved in how they'll look for side issues to fix (and marketise) rather than just face the obvious problem head on. |
By:
A broken country.
By:
The NRA appear to have more power than Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton put together.
They can't even outlaw semi automatic weapons! It's staggering. |
By:
See the Senator that represents Sandy Hook community has stated that they (the Senate) should blame themselves for not doing anything to put a stop to the carnage.

Some journalist tweeted that he's reported on the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 9th deadliest shootings in the US and he's only been in the country 2 years.
Things are actually getting far worse and the government is actively facilitating it. |

19th school shooting and we haven't even reached March. |

The FBI were aware of an online threat this lunatic made, and he was banned from taking a bckpack into school, yet he was still allowed to carry it out.

keeping running totals seems to encourage the wannabee
antiheroes, setting records seems to make it worse. the media really need to look at their reporting of these mass shootings and terror events because in attempting to portray these acts of evil they simply feed the ego of evil and sick folk. 18 this year is staggering |
By:
What's the alternative Donny? Don't report it?
By:
good question mikael, i think some seeds are planted by the reporting
there would be an outcry if they dont report, but the reporting seems to encourage the act of a future wannabee |
By:
i dont mean encourage as in the reporters wanting another act to report upon, they dont
but the future wannabee wants to be reported... |
By:
I think it's a duty of the press to report on this kind of thing. As long as they're not sensationalising or glorifying them then I don't think they're doing anything wrong. As long as you can buy semi-automatic weapons in the local supermarket with minimal checks then there are going to be mass shootings.
By:
yep removing these weapons is an obvious first step to help stopping these events
regardless of reporting on them |

tv is a powerful tool , advertisers pay fortunes for 30 seconds
a usa sitcom can change language around the world as folk copy what they see |

A single lorry attack could cause as many deaths as this shooting. If a nutter wants to kill they'll find a way
guns are a singularly efficient way of killing people. that's what they're for. |
By:
guns don't kill people, people do.............Aye people with guns
By:
Clearly the issue is that no-one else in the school had a gun, so they were unable to take down the shooter. What America really needs is more guns.
I have genuinely seen that argument presented online. I sh1t you not. Of course, it would take decades for tighter gun controls to have a significant impact on the stats (such is the ludicrous number of guns in circulation in the US), but you have to start somewhere. |

What hope is there with shops like this: 'Guns & Guitars'.
http://www.gunsguitars.com/guns.html The AK 47 is selling for just $625!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
By:
when i was in a "sporting goods" shop in Mobile Alabama back in the 90's we were having a look at the hand guns
but told the guy we couldn't buy one as we were just tourists. He said no problem if you want one I will sell you one. He had no idea who we were, insanely irresponsible & i bet little has changed. I bought 4.............. (not really) |
By:
There seems to be a total disconnect with availability of guns and these mass shootings. only the usa has that
availability & only in the usa does this regularly happen. The attempt to disconnect the two issues has already begun, from the very top. It's outrageous |
By:
sadly its become the "norm"for these type of shootings in america ,was anyone here suprised when this latest one happened ! bit like the stabbings we have in london it happens so much that it does not have the " impact " it is almost an everyday occourance but there are many who oppose stop and search !
By:
we have a much more open and honest debate about knife crime than the USA has about gun deaths.
the work done in Glasgow has been extensive & successful, nobody seems willing or able to tackle these problems in the US. As soon as issues are raised some gun nut screams 2nd amendment. If it was an amendment why can't you amend it again? |
By:
Excellent point NL.
By:
There are allegations that at least some of these mass shootings are false flags, designed to sway the American public into accepting much tighter gun control laws against their best interests. Part of the reason for the 2nd amendment right is for citizens to be able to take down a government that gets too oppressive. It really puts the power into the hands of the people.
A potentially oppressive government would indeed take the false flag path as a step towards disarming the public. Some people in America know this, that's why they're so suspicious. General gun ownership is a double edged sword though for obvious reasons. |
By:
Only cretins think these are false flag attacks.
How is tighter gun control against their best interests? |
By:
More guns than people ffs. They're not all Colt 45s either.
By:
Mikael, 'cos then they wont be able to defend themselves against oppression.
By:
Yeah, I've heard that argument from those nutter survivalist types that live on mountains in Montana.
By:
You'd think their God would save them from oppression!
By:
"People shouldn't be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people." A line from V for Vendetta
By:
when you have a movement that does not want background checks on gun owners and does not want people
with mental illness at least checked on their suitability to hold firearms and vehemently opposes licensing of lethal weapons in any form then you are basically arguing with a brick wall. The big argument is over types of weapons. If these weapons are for defence why do they call them "assault weapons?" |
By:
a post on the net ,2 young children one holding an ak47 the other holding a kinder chocolate egg ,with the caption which one is banned in america ,2 guesses !

Guess it's not the 'Kinder gentler machine gun hand'?
