Funnily enough when I first joined my boat a lad asked me " Had the British forgiven them for beating them in the war of independence" I told him we'd won and lost many wars since and that it was funnily enough not of any consequence to the British. Went on to tell him it was mainly disgruntled English men doing the fighting Laugh

I am somewhat interested in history particularly the  napoleonic era  and I have to laugh at how your lot didn't play fair and wouldn't stand still to be shot at ha ha!!!   The British were way behind. But, as usual, copied some of your ideas.

Where are you fishing in Sussex?. No need for absolute details, just interested!.  Three good big private lakes in idyllic surroundings next to me.  What's your pref.

As mentioned before, van Gogh.  I appreciate that the first G can be difficult for non-Dutch speakers but "Go", ignoring the gh, bears absolutely no resemblance to the original.  They've even changed the vowel sound.

Also, missile.  Which they pronounce as miss-all.

I hate the way they say 'fillet' as in 'fillay steak'.

Everyone knows it is pronounced 'fillit'.

It must be particularly annoying to the French.

Dook of Edinbro as in Duke of Edinburgh

and they don't even understand their own language,
where one guy wrote about a 'guarder belt'

In fairness there could be contra arguments, seeing as,
in our speak, New & Knew are pronounced the same!

Pronouncing Moscow as Mos-cow (rather than Mos-coe) makes sense in the States, because that's how the German word for Moscow is pronounced (Moskau). And more Americans trace their ancestry to Germans than any other group.

I like how they mispronounce our placenames.

'Wor-sester-shyer' and 'Lye-sester-shyer' being the good examples

But also Wor-Wick, and my personal favourite - 'Nodding haam' Laugh

When: 17 Jan 18 15:35
there are some vowels they just refuse to pronounce properly - "A" being the most common,
I dare anyone to visit the States and go to a cafe and order (in your loudest, proudest, British accent) "a basil and tomato soup" Laugh

the most grating has to be meeeeer

New Yorkers esp have some gems - kwahfee is my personal fav.

Some of my silent screaming moments-
Spending time in hospital is always spending time in "the" hospital - as if there was only one.
Restroom. (aaarghh!)
Gasoline for petrol
Soccer for football
Soccer Mum (wtf?)
Military for army
Line for queue
Yard for garden
Pants for trousers

and all of the previous examples.
etc etc etc
And while we're on the subject - chat show hosts who sit behind a desk three feet above their guests - can't watch it sorry.

How does that work if Danny DeVito's a guest?

And deviating slightly away from pronunciation, my absolute favourite expression commonly heard in New York is "I don't got" instead of "I haven't got".

Mind-blowingly ugly.
