Lewis Hamilton has been accused of humiliating his young nephew online after he disapproved of his choice of Christmas attire, telling him: “Boys don’t wear princess dresses.”

The Formula One world champion posted a video on Instagram in which he makes fun of the child, who is wearing a purple and pink outfit and carrying a pink wand with a heart on it.

“I’m so sad right now. Look at my nephew,” says Hamilton to his Instagram followers, as the camera focuses on the boy.

“Why are you wearing a princess dress? Is this what you got for Christmas?” he asks, as the boy nods delightedly.

“Why did you ask for a princess dress for Christmas?” he goes on.

“Because it’s pretty,” the boy replies enthusiastically, waving the pink wand.

“Boys don’t wear princess dresses!” says Hamilton, who has since deleted the video from his account.

The 32-year-old was abroad celebrating Christmas with his family when he posted the video. Since it was posted he has been roundly criticised on social media for negatively stereotyping his relative on the basis of his gender.

Travis Alabanza, a performance artist, said: “I hope Lewis Hamilton properly thinks and apologises to his nephew for that video.”

unlike standing around in a princess dress worrying about appearance and being pretty

how do you know that's the reason why the child chose to dress like a princess?
Report lfc1971 • December 28, 2017 11:26 AM GMT
I don't think it is anything more than the fact that young boys can be silly and mischievous ,
and perhaps it is not a case of worrying about appearance
Well that's good , as long as he plays football in it

let's say a five year boy has seen a film with a princess in it, who stands up to evil but is also compassionate and kind to her friends.

let's say he wants to dress up as a princess for these reasons.

is it "unhealthy" to allow him to do so, or is it unhealthy to prohibit him and tell him to go outside and play football or soldiers instead?
Report lfc1971 • December 28, 2017 11:39 AM GMT
no, I wouldn't want a young boy to dress up as mother Theresa either
Report saddo • December 28, 2017 11:40 AM GMT
Prohibit sounds rather severe. Gentle guidance about the differences between boys and girls clothing would seem a sensible approach. To tell children that there is no difference between genders would seem pretty ridiculous to most people I would think.

"no" is not an answer to my question.

you say you don't want boys dressing up as girls because it's unhealthy for children to be concerned about their looks and appearance.

I'm asking that if this isn't the reason they have chosen to do so, what's your objection?

"If any young lad asks "Mum, Dad, can I have a princess costume?"

A sensible answer is:

" Girls become Princesses son, boys become Princes. Would you like a Prince's costume?

"No, I watched Frozen and thought Elsa was brave and funny and stood up for what she believed in, and I want to be like that, so can I please have a princess costume"

Next question. A girl asks:

"Mum, Dad, can I have a batman costume because batman is strong and daring and fights crime?"

What's the answer. No - you can have a heavily sexualised batgirl costume instead?

As you all don't seem to understand:

Young children don't see gender in the same way that adults do. They see behaviour far more prominently. Historically, many stories have ascribed particular behavioural traits to their protagonists based on gender.

If you choose to restrict a child's choice of play characters based on gender we implicitly endorse
certain roles and character attributes according to gender. Boys - brave, strong, hardy, stoic. Girls - weak, defenseless, emotional. We teach our version of what we expect boys and girls to be based on narrow definitions - that somehow it's wrong for a boy to be weak or emotional or kind.

So no, this isn't about telling boys and girls that there are no differences between the genders, there are and they will discover this, without any help from us, when the time comes. It's about allowing children to explore all types of different characters, emotions, behaviours and roles through play without restricting their choices based on gender.

boys shouldn't be encouraged to wear dresses, nor, and it was a decision i actively opposed at my son's nursery, should they be told that they can't play war based games.

Nor will I pretend that there aren't specific types of behaviour which little boys and little girls naturally tend to congregate towards.

But if a young boy or a young girl wants to dress up as a character which is often depicted as female or male respectively, i believe that there is the potential for more harm in opposing it than there is in allowing it.

If anyone is imposing control or enforcing particular ways to think, it is those who are opposed to this idea.

dstyle is part of a minority of very noisy people who see it as trendy to grab attention about confusing gender on the basis of a minority who themselves have issues and will also be confused. This is sad on so many points.
Instead of concentrating on the issues us so called trans have, they wish to impose the trans view on 100 percent of the population - of which there is only a minority of trans.  And many of this tiny minority (who say they speak for us) have seized the political torch to castigate hamilton and the rest of you.  I don't expect any of you would appreciate me bombarding you with the trans view of the world.  But unfortunately dstyle and his friends in the media seem obsessed with thrashing you constantly with their strange need to tell the majority how to run their lives.  Just leave us in the trans world alone and stop badgering the majority with your silly views of it because you actually know nothing about it.
They like to use this topic and the whole lgbti issue as a political rallying point to show how inadequate the rest of you are.  It surely is about feeling good as they have you by the ....   ho ho
Report moisok • December 28, 2017 2:48 PM GMT
They also try to lump the many strands of so called 'trans' under one label as they do with the whole lgbti issue.  But it is good for making you straights feel uncomfortable and is also good for votes.  It also forces politicians into a corner and makes people apologise for being straight. Or apologise for something that does not need apologising for.

this topic has absolutely nothing to do with transgender issues. In making it so, it shows you clearly miss the entire thrust of the argument and have mistaken it for something else entirely.

There is an entire industry out there which nauseatingly and inexplicably seeks to persuade them that they are neither male or female, and that they are not heterosexual.

Look at it from the bright side. Gay youngsters need to hide much less than used to be the case. It's also much easier to free yourself from the harmful religious indoctrination than in days thankfully gone by. No more entire church industry that nauseatingly and inexplicably seeks to persuade them that they are an abomination for no good reason other than some random dude once upon a time putting it into foetid book written thousands of years ago. Wait, actually there still is that industry. Not to mention

Furthermore, while media coverage has increased dramatically, violence among young people is actually down compared to decades of the past. If we're being honest, today's youngsters are by and large much more civilised and better than us rascals were.

Additionally, while there might be increased emphasis in our societies to make sure to communicate that being yourself is ok and you don't need to hide, I wouldn't say it's nauseating or that it's trying to persuade people to suddenly want dick instead of ****. Or that there's any real effort to persuade people they're neither male nor female.

Instead there's an industry that persuades girls to use makeup at an ever younger age. There's a new Kinder egg specifically made for girls. An entire Disney Princesses franchise and all that kinda stuff that actually caters specifically to girls (though occasionally you might get a boy inspired by the movies and want to dress up as one of those heroines. That's how cool they are). And more so than used to be the case. I don't remember growing up and girls having all these unicorns, awesome shows like Wishenpoof, Disney heroines (ranging from rather girly to brave Moana) that teach them women can be cool and awesome too (i.e it's ok to be a girl) or them using makeup at like 4 years old.

Overall, it must be pretty darn good to be young.

IS - It’s about consistency. The action of Hamilton is the same as the action of other individuals. Hamilton expressed an opinion “boys shouldn’t wear dresses” and shared it with the public. Other people expressed an opinion “Hamilton I think you are wrong boys should be allowed to wear dresses if they want to” and shared it with the public. As moisok pointed out that Dstyle and the media were “telling the majority how to live their lives”, I thought that as it’s the same action then Hamilton must also be “telling people how to live their lives”.

So when you say “LH saying  the first thing came into his mind is telling people how to live their lives, i have never read something so ridiculous.” I assume what you must be saying is that “LH saying  the first thing came into his mind is telling people how to live their lives, is the most equally ridiculous thing I’ve read along with "But unfortunately dstyle and his friends in the media seem obsessed with thrashing you constantly with their strange need to tell the majority how to run their lives."

Look Hamilton had an opinion and shared it with the public. Certain members of the public had an opinion and shared it with the public. If you object to the principle of one you object to the principle of the other. If you find one action outrageous then you should find the other action outrageous as well. I have no moral outrage with Hamilton, I don’t wish to silence anyone , I have no political agenda, I am making no statement on how the media report or not report information, I just disagree with Hamilton’s opinion.

In religion some would say ;  God doesn’t make mistakes. When He fashioned you in your mother’s womb with the care of that of an artist making His one and only greatest masterpiece, God took delight in choosing the things that make you uniquely you. If you feel like there was some big mistake when you were created, then let’s just be brutally honest and say that we don’t share the same definition of God. If God is an all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-loving Father, it is impossible for Him to make mistakes because it would be contrary to His nature. God created you male or female for a reason.

Perhaps you can recall the names of the three characters her story The Three Golliwogs.

Or the plotline of The Little Black Doll.

And that's before we start with a rather outdated and stereotyped view of gender roles in the Famous Five.

Now of course, we must allow for some cultural and historical relativism: none of this was wrong at the time she wrote the books and for a good period thereafter, and she shouldn't be criticised for it. We shouldn't demand that her books are burnt or that she's erased from history but I think many parents would prefer other books with good reason.

Blyton was not even permitted to be interviewed on woman's hour , once again the 'educationalists' however they are
would not permit her voice to be heard
Nothing much changes at the BBC

The novel Edith Blyton was writing was always the same novel , it was an English novel that's why people loved it ,in England , and many countries throughout the world
And perhaps that is why the BBC hated it

Kästner was a Saxon, so more or less English. He basically created the entire clever kids go crime fighting genre.

It's all about a minority of people 'torch bearing' for a group.  They use it politically. It makes them feel good.  Backing everyone into a corner.  Politicians etc, so no one dare utter a word.
Very few of them are so called trans and very few know what it is like to be part of that group and what we want.
Your language and culture is forcefully being changed by them as they seize the narrative on many issues.
And people on here actually welcome it.

and he didn't even force the ARD to somewhat disown him by writing about dolls only being cute if they're pink instead of having ugly black faces.

That lovely things such as Erich Kastner and Enid Blyton books exist is a lovely thought
